The 2005 Jeep Liberty is a capable off-roader and can handle daily driving with ease.
Jeep’s pint-sized SUV, the Liberty, is now three years into its first generation on the market in the United States. Three powertrains are available for the 2005 model year. The first is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 150 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. The first optional engine is a 3.7-liter V6 that makes 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. A 2.8-liter turbodiesel inline-four is available that makes 160 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
The Jeep Liberty Sport's four-cylinder engine comes only with a six-speed manual transmission and no option to add an automatic transmission, which comes standard with the V6. The diesel comes with a five-speed automatic with overdrive. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available.
The Liberty slots into the Jeep lineup as one of its smallest vehicles. It's smaller than a Grand Cherokee and not quite as hardcore as a Wrangler, but carries many of the most popular styling elements from both.
Three trims are available: Sport, Renegade, and Limited. The Liberty competes with the Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, Nissan Xterra, Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, and Toyota RAV4. It is targeted at new-car buyers that want a compact SUV with legitimate off-road capabilities.

The Liberty straddles the line between everyday usability and off-road capabilities, and mostly does that well. It carries many of Jeep’s most recognizable design elements, such as the upright slat grille, fender flares, round headlights, and rear tailgate-mounted spare tire, but it’s not as rugged or unrefined as the brand name might suggest. It’s got a smoother, friendlier, design that reflects its multi-purpose position in the Jeep lineup.
Inside, the Liberty is surprisingly roomy and is more than happy hauling four full-sized adults and a couple of dogs far into the woods. The front seats are well-padded and soft, but also feature bolstering deep enough to keep backsides in place. The rear seats are comfortable as well, and benefit from the Liberty’s boxy shape, which doesn’t let the roofline slope too drastically toward the rear of the vehicle.

The gasoline four-cylinder engine and its exclusive five-speed gearbox pair well, and provide ample power for most situations. Things get significantly more interesting with the available 3.7-liter V6 under the hood, which is smooth, refined, and responsive. The available diesel engine gets good fuel economy and provides solid low-down torque that is needed to power over off-road obstacles. The diesel also provides a 5,000-pound towing rating.
The Liberty’s off-road chops do come at the expense of some comfort, however, as there’s a bit more disruption over rough roads than is expected. Steering is easy and predictable and braking is confidently solid, but it’s hard to ignore the Liberty’s suspension and the difficulties it has remaining composed over bumpy roads.

The Liberty offers a sizable cargo hold, with up to 29 cubic feet of space behind the back seats. The tall roof makes loading large items in and out easy, and folding the seats down more than doubles the available room to 69 cubic feet of cargo space. That's pretty impressive as far as small SUVs go.
The Liberty starts to fall down a bit in the convenience department. Its upright shape and narrow doors make it difficult to enter and exit the vehicle. They also complicate the child-seat loading process and make it more likely that there will be bumped heads and annoyed kids. Legroom in Liberty models is also limited because of its straight-up shape.

Standard tech in the 2005 Jeep Liberty includes remote keyless entry, an AM/FM stereo with CD player, air conditioning, six speaker audio system, and a 12-volt power outlet. Optional features include power windows and door locks, SiriusXM Satellite radio, a light bar, a DVD-based navigation system with integrated six-disc CD changer, tire pressure monitoring display, a sunroof, fog lamps, an Infinity premium six-speaker stereo, and power front seat adjustments.
The Liberty is quite bare from the factory, in terms of tech, but that’s not that surprising a factoid for a wannabe off-roader. That said, the functionality that it does have works well, and is easily controlled while the vehicle is in motion.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) took a critical view of the Jeep Liberty, rating it "marginal" for moderate overlap front crashworthiness and "poor" for its headlights. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wasn’t convinced either. It rated the sport utility with mixed four- and five-star scores for front passenger side and front driver side crashworthiness, respectively. Rollover resistance scored similarly poorly, at just three stars out of five.
Standard safety equipment includes advanced multi-stage driver and front-passenger airbags and an occupant classification system. Available features include tire pressure warnings, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and supplemental side airbags.

The Jeep Liberty starts with an MSRP of under $20,000 and doesn’t move up a significant amount from there. That’s not a surprise, though, because in most of its forms the Liberty is hard to call well-equipped. It does have a rugged personality and 4-wheel drive capabilities that many of its competitors don’t have, which will be enough to overcome the stripped down nature of the vehicle for many people.
Gas mileage isn't the worst, but it's not going to win any awards, either. The V6 powertrain delivers 17/21 mpg city/hwy, which is acceptable when comparing it against the competition only because of the engine's larger size.

NEVER PURCHASE A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY, and DONT LET ANYONE GIVE YOU ONE.
I bought a 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited 4 door 4x4 . 2 1/2 years ago and will never buy another Jeep or Chrysler vehicle. I thought the problem was only because it is a used USA registered vehicle imported to Canada but since This has caused me nothing but problems from the time the keys were in my hand, I’ve researched it.
It was an overpriced shiny blue and matte black paint job to cover up the rusted out bottom half of the vehicle with shiny tire wash to top it off. It has had electrical issues right from the start.
Dead battery 1st morning ,
burnt out tail lights and signal light 2nd day,
key broke off ignition 3rd day,
back drivers side window fell into the door 4th day,
burnt out tail lights and signal lights again and one head light 5th day,
no high beams 6th day,
replace head lights / signal lights/ rear lights over and over (I had to quit changing them, there is no point.)
Had to pay $400 to a dealership for coded key (without the fob) because the vehicle only had one key when I bought it. It has never worked properly; the horn goes off every time I unlock the door. It has been a 2 year fight to get keys to work once coded. Now, I finally have the answer, the relay switch needs to be replaced.
I haven’t looked under the hood except to add coolant to the top while it drains out the bottom because I can’t afford to put fuel in the gas guzzler But while I’m filling the coolant, I’m wondering what 2 year old child played with the wiring in to make the gobs of wires that decorate the top of the motor
Check engine light always on.
Check tire pressure notice always on.
The doors are rusted all the way through. as is the whole bottom side.
The back break pads and rotors rusted off; there were only chunks of rusted metal left.
The VIN doesn’t register in USA recalls or Canada recalls and I know there are 8 recalls as of today, for the 2005, none of which include what is wrong with my Jeep and many other 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty owners. Apparently no tail lights is not a safety concern but it is problem enough to get pulled over 2 times in 10 minutes.
I had such high hopes for this vehicle but Chrysler doesn’t seem to care on either side of the border that the 2005 Jeep Liberty has so many safety issues, near misses and fatal collisions and accidents. It’s just a mistake of a vehicle in their books and we have to pay.

I like everything about it! Looks nice inside & out. Comfortable & handles well. The design is fully functional. Plenty of space for 4 to sit comfortably. Enough storage room unless your using it to move furniture. Rear end opens up wide & rear seats fold down or just one individually.May 20, 2015

Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Exterior appearance changes in 2005 include a new front fascia, grille, fender flares and body side moldings. Interior upgrades include relocated power window switches, new instrument panel cluster graphics and trim bezels and improved seat comfort.
The Liberty handles really easy, it is a safe ride and has a good bit of power with the 3.7L v6 Sport model. It is fun to drive and take to the mountains.Jun 17, 2014

I love diesel vehicles, and this one doesn't disappoint. The only thing I'm not the biggest fan of is the chrome accents. But I've never been much of a chrome girl. I bought my Jeep new in February, 2005. The only issue I had was the AC went out at around 120,000 miles. I recently lost my Jeep (with 149,000 miles) to ice & a guardrail. Even though I bounced off the guardrail, flipped on my (driver's) side and slid spinning about 30 feet before flipping back upright, the engine never stopped running. I turned it off and walked away with a few bruises. For that reason alone, I am now looking for another Jeep. Feb 21, 2014

It's a good choice for drivers who like to venture into the backcountry, but need comfort and practicality in a daily driver. A higher degree of off-highway capability separates the Liberty from other small SUVs. 1 week ago I bought the Jeep Liberty. I am in love with Jeep. Gorgeous, super comfortable, spend a little gasoline, but nothing extreme.
I feel very safe driving in the jeep liberty and it is a very comfortable car with a nice trunk!

Found out today that every valve on the right side of the engine, on my 2005 Liberty with 29,000 miles, is burnt. The story from the mechanic it is that due to some carbon build up and it has caused the valve guides to go bad. He also stated that not driving it enough can be a cause for the carbon build up. He also found that one of the timing chain guides had broken . . on the right side. Coincidence?
So, $3100 later it is time to say goodbye to the Liberty

I don't like that the heater will absolutely burn your feet up but the air around your body will still be chilled. Otherwise, the four wheel drive is awesome and will really get you out of sticky situations. I have plenty of room to haul things as well as comfortable seating for 5. Oct 16, 2009

it's a 6 speed!! fun and super zippy.it likes to get up and go fast. corners ok, but it has a narrow wheel base, so can't go really super fast around corners. but, the turning radius is amazing! i can turn around in the tightest of places. my one regret is that i didn't get the 4-wheel drive [i couldn't afford it :( ] and it's back wheel drive which sucks ass in the snow and ice. otherwise, its great1Oct 10, 2009

I needed an SUV that could haul 5k--I have a boat. This
is pretty good. Still have some sway during towing, but
not too bad. We did get a transmission temp light when
we were towing in the mountains, but we slowed and it
went out. Ride is comfortable. Gas milage is really poor
when we tow, but adequate when we don't. It seats 5
comfortably. I don't think the seats are great at repelling
stains though. Guess I just have to get used to that.
Not sure I'd buy another one just due to the fact they

Basically a stock Liberty with a set of pirelli scorpion sires, something i picked up that is a little more practical to drive than my truck and dart. gets about 21 MPG and does great offroad and in the snow, perfect little "grown up" vehicle to suppliment my other two rides.May 20, 2008

A fairly average vehicle in every respect, good engine behaves well on the road but what really lets this car down is comfit and the horrid noise of the 2.7CRD engine it like a tractor after about 15-20mins it really get on your nerves, needs more sound insulation alot more. Jan 05, 2008

Okay I have 05 Jeep Liberty with about 150,000 miles on it , I know for a fact I need a oil change (since one hasn’t been done for a little while ) So it could be one reason it knocking so I’ve read into , I checked all fluids and everything but oil was a little low so I added some in , still making a knocking noise it seems to be coming from the back of the engine , not sure what to look for or where to go from here just hoping it not nothing major like bushings or rod . Anyone have any suggestion of what to look for or try next ? It’s also 3.7l engine if that helps

Overheating and bad ignition coils
My Jeep Liberty 05 has had overheating problems lately, but the problems always seem to be solved. Therefore the water pump, ac compressor and motor fan are all recently new . Now its overheating again, I have to keep using water instead of antifreeze because it eats it up. So now I have no idea what it could be if everything is basically new. To add to that, now I have bad ignition coils that I have to replace, since that became a problem, my car over heats like crazy now. Also smells like burnt too.

2005 Jeep Liberty 3.7L. New fan, and thermostat. Purged system of air. Filled, ran, refilled, system is full. Run at idle 30 minutes, and temp is rock steady at the mid point mark of the temp gauge. Ran it for 10 minutes at 50 mph and temp rose to the 3/4 mark. Pulled in home and checked fan and its running radiator hose at the top (engine exhaust) is hot, radiator hose at the bottom (engine intake) is air temp cold. Fan was still running. Let idle and temp came back to normal. What is going on?
