Toyota responded to consumer complaints about the small engines in its Rav4s by producing its most powerful SUV ever. The 2004 Toyota Rav4 was given a 2.4-liter I4 rated at 161 horsepower, 13 more horses than the previous engine.
The leather package proved to be a popular option, with reviewers raving about the soft leather. Side airbags remained an option, as did new curtain side airbags. Power mirrors and intermittent wipers are now standard, as is a retuned, improved suspension.
The price on this little SUV did not reflect the quality of the improvements, keeping below the $20,000 cut-off for the standard SUV.

My problem is only the exterior.
I am just going to give it to a bodywork people in order to fix it.For now, everything is good.

Not crazy about the body style, is outdated.....however if there is no damage or rust, i am sure i could deal with it as long as it us mechanically sound, and reliable. not sure about safety features in that year and model.Jan 24, 2022

Good ol reliable Toyota’s. Did a lot of research ‘04/05 were the best of second gen Rav4s. Then finding one with a single owner, with and average of 10,000 miles a year, no accidents. I think I made a great choice. May 29, 2021

It is a real cool nice SUV !
bigger space and better mileage. should have bought the one with leather seats since we have small kids in the family. It will be a lot easier to make it clean all the time.Jul 28, 2013

I really enjoyed driving this car, the sterling wheel is very smooth and soft, never ever had any problem with this vehicle, i did oil change every 300 to 400 miles, for $40, i liked to use the best recommend oil for my car. I did tune up every year. iJul 13, 2013

I love the reliability and practicality of the Toyota Rav4. It has never let me down and has been easy to maintain and care. It is the perfect size to fit camping, climbing, and all other gear or kids and friends in the back.May 26, 2012

i bought this car in 04 with 5 miles on it, straight off the lot. now it has over 200k, its a peice, the tranny went out twice, it supposed to get 25 mpg lets just say im lucky to get 20. i have to keep a vice grip on my gas line to keep it running semi- right. i love my car but all together its a piece and everyone knows it.. if it blew up tomorrow i would be the happiest girl in the world. :)Jul 20, 2010

Agile et économe pour un SUV, utile et versatile aussi!
Le rendement du 2.4L est bien, adapté au poids du véhicule.
Bon achat je crois... Agréable pr un small SUV. C pas donné mais ça vaut son prix! Antirouille obligatoire...Aug 05, 2009

This is a rock solid Japanese car. It is very low maintenance, and it gets great gas milage for an SUV.
It does not accelerate as quickly as you would expect,
but that is not a huge issue! The car is small, so it is
easy to park in tight spots!.Jul 23, 2008

I owned a RAV4 back in 01-03 and it proved to be a great car in Boston: fits easily in tiny parking spaces, has 4wd, can carry plenty of crap and fit my bike fully assembled with one seat removed. Plus, it's fun to drive with the manual transmission (shame! Toyota for messing this up) and returns decent MPG.
On the outside, the RAV4 has a sporty look, and my L version has painted over-fenders, a spoiler, tinted windows and a hard spare tire shell. Over the look is clean and uniform. The L also has fog lights standard, a nice feature.
Under the hood is a 4-cylinder, efficient engine. I return between 19 and 26 MPG, the lower number in all city driving. 4WD is permanently engaged, surely keeping MPGs lower than if it was defeatable. The manual transmission has 5 gears, and clutch engagement is decent. The shifter is not rubbery, either, however the 1-2 shift is somewhat finicky and can cause discomfort to passengers. My Accord did not suffer this fate.
In 2004, Toyota made their Star Safety system standard, which includes Anti-Lock Brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Traction Control, Vehicle Skid Control and Brake Assist. All of these features were not on my 2001 RAV4. My particular vehicle also has side impact airbags. Overall I feel very safe in this car.
On the inside, all of the controls are well laid-out and are of high-quality materials. The dashboard has high-quality appearance hard plastic. The seats fold down, recline, slide forward and backwards, and remove completely. As I mentioned I can completely fit my bike inside with just one seat removed...even placed on top of the other rear seat as they are split 50/50. The front seats are comfortable, and the driving position is great for my 6'3" frame. The steering wheel is smaller diameter than many I've seen, and is leather wrapped creating a sporty feel.
Driving dynamics are pretty good, but definitely not BMW-quality. The ride can be somewhat harsh, especially with engine buzzing at high speeds. A sixth gear would be a godsend. The steering is not overly tight, but not Toyota-loose.
Overall, it's a great compromise of ability and performance, in addition to utility and 4wd. Aside from my dream car, an IS (no AWD with manual - SHAME!), the RAV4 does well. It's really a shame that Toyota bloated up the 06+ RAV4's and removed the manual transmission option. They removed me from the RAV market by doing so.Jan 05, 2008

This car will never have a problem ... ever!Jan 02, 2008
I just purchased a 2004 Toyota RAV 4L. No owners manual with it. There is a blue flashing light at top center of windshield going off? When I start the car it stops flashing. When I shut it off it's starts flashing again?? I have checked the sunroof and all seems to be fine? I am not even certain that is what it is hooked to..just guessing from the location.
04 Rav with 200k , well maintained/serviced. Lights all came On, drives fine. Stopped at Advanced auto, computer read code , attendant said 9/10 it is tied to evaporation, said probably need a new Gas cap. Any other suggestion? thank you!
Why do I get different search results for the same search criteria done at the same time on different computers? I performed a search on my pc and saved some listings. I wanted to take my search with me so I opened my laptop and went to the site but my saved listings were not there. So I performed the same search with the same criteria/filters and the listings shown on my pc were not available on my laptop. I don't understand that.
