With regard ro the XK8, the 2003-2006 models have the reliable 4.2 liter engine, Naturally aspirated and super charged. The earlier 4.0 liter engine is known to have timing chain tensioner issues (plastic) and requires an upgrade or you risk the chain snapping and fatal damage to the engine. The 4.2 NA has 300hp but feels more quick than fast. The xKR adds a supercharger for over 400hp. The interior quality is typical historical Jaguar with walnut veneer, wooden steering wheel, leather and nice carpet (not Wilton). Reliability is pretty good for the 4.2 litre cars, but it’s not a Toyota in terms of being trouble free. Rust is a big issue and mine merely had nuisance items go bad prematurely like a wheel bearing. But it has mostly been very reliable. In 2007 the X150 Alumimum cars came out looking quite a bit more modern. Quicker than the earlier steel cars, the x150s nevertheless lack the quality of materials of the xk8. In 2009 the 4.2 litre engine was superseded by a 5.0 litre motor which is quite a bit more powerful with 385 hp NA and eventually over 500 SC horses. Sadly the 5.0 litre cars renewed the Jaguar AJ8 engine’s timing chain tensioners. This was allegedly ironed out by 2013. In my opinion, as an owner and having driven all versions, the 4.2 engine cars are most desirable and have modest running costs. Any pre-2013 5.0 litre or 4.0 litre car should have timing chain tensioner upgrades verified or use it to get a discount. The xk8 has more quality to the interior and comfort. It also looks more like the E-Type if that is important to you. The X150 in my opinion is a bit better looking, quicker and feels more eager with less weight. Both in 4.2 are good cars. It’s your call.Feb 22, 2022
