Dodge Dakotas continue to be not only one of the most popular pickups on the market, but one of the most popular vehicles, period. It is the perfect compromise for couples where the guy wants the macho power of a truck and the woman wants the safety, dependability, and handling of a car. It has the storage capacity of a minivan, but guys don't have to be embarrassed to be seen driving it.
In fact, all owners, both male and female love their Dodge Dakotas for both the comfort and the power. Aside from the sluggish base model 2.5-liter, 120-hp engine, the most popular models are those with either the 3.9-liter V6 or the powerful 4.7-liter V8 (for those who would love to have, but can't afford a sports car as their second car). The R/T performance model boasts the rumbling 5.9-liter V8, topping out at 250-hp, but the 4.7's 235-hp is more than enough for most drivers. The big hit that drove up sales for Dakotas was the introduction of the quad-cab, a four-door Dakota with car-like rear seating, available only in regular cab models. It has more legroom, but a smaller bed.
New for the 2002 Dodge Dakota is an SXT trim, available only in the 2-door regular or extended Club Cab. This sportier-looking model comes standard with a few extra features than the base model, including 16-inch wheels, bucket seats, and a rear stabilizer. New for the limited R/T models is optional chrome wheels. An electronic brake apportioning system (EBA) enhances braking precision and durability.

All in all, I believe that the Dakota has filled a niche between the small wimpy lightweight pickups and the full-sized ones. I was sorry to see Dodge discontinue the series as it is just the right size and power for what I do at my home.
The truck rides and handles well, stays with traffic on the freeway, the gas mileage is so-so at about 16-18 mpg depending on my right foot and the overall repair costs are comparable to any other vehicles that I have owned.
Acceleration is decent, but not head-turning, braking is good and I do enjoy driving this truck both on and off road. Just remember that 4WD is no better on ice than any other vehicle.Apr 28, 2015

My Dodge Dakota has been to New Jersey and back and to Texas and back with no problems at all. Both trips we hauled stuff there and back , and the truck handled well on the interstate; and also preformed well in town.Mar 24, 2014

I have owned this car for 2 years and love it. Powerful engine and fully functional 4wd makes this a great work truck. I would definitely recommend this truck to those in a profession that requires a dependable truck. Maintenance costs are low and gas mileage is good for the engine size. I have owned the truck since 2004 and 15,000 miles. I have never regreated the purchase . It is and has been a great truck. Unlike other smaller trucks it has enough room to seat 3 adults across the seat. The factory towing package , lets you tow up to 7,000 lb. trailer. with heavy duty Alternator, and oil cooler.Oct 20, 2013

Love the size, looks, and performance. This is RT with Kenne Bell supercharger, plus a few other mods. I haven't have anything real wrong with it. The ride is nice. It accelerates nicely. The handling is really good. Stock this truck get 13 to 15 miles to the gallon around town and during the winter. It gets up to about 19 miles to the gallon on the highway. Towing is nice.Oct 23, 2011

I could certainly tolerate the terrible 11 mpg average if the engine had more power. This engine produces the same or less horsepower than most v-6's now. I like everything else about this truck....its utility, its size and maneuverability, its looks.....just the fuel efficiency and lack of power are its only weaknesses.May 21, 2011

My truck has less then 99,000 miles on it. It has never needed a major repair, but the best part of this truck is the fact that it has never failed me. i hhave never gotten stuck, it is lodas of fun when you trun off the four wheel drive and drive on some ice. This Truck is very good buy, i love my dakota.
This truck has been my baby for awhile now.
Short ram intake, Toyo A/t tires, Limo tint on back windows, 20% on front windows.

It accelarates faster than a porshe boxer. Brakes are ok could use an upgrade. Handles ok for its size not exacutaly something that makes sharp turns quick. Had a few replacements, Beds been replaced, bodys been repainted and a brand new 06 rear end has been put in. This car is amazing to drive, just dont take it throuh mud.Nov 14, 2009

What a truck. Good power. Enough room to seat six. Comfortable for cruising on the highway. Largest bed for any 4dr midsize truck. Plenty of headroom and enough room in the backseat to fit a six-footer. Not too small like Chevy s-10 or Ford ranger. Only V8 in its class. Unlike a full truck you could still whip it around in traffic a park it with ease. Mine had two tone paint, custom subwoofer boxes, and larger tires to fill the wheel wells. Great handeling on and off road. Good acceleration.

This truck feels very solid. It handles just the same way, very strongly and with plenty of power from the V6 engine. Braking requires a bit more distance than normal since they are disc brakes instead of ABS. Styling inside and out is great. The gas milieage for a truck is about average, normally gettting into the mid 20's. It's a fun truck to drive, and a great truck to own for work or play.Aug 17, 2008

I love it, its got 105k and it still performs like it did when i bought it new. only complaint i have is the crome on the rear bumper is flaking off. Also started to rust through . People say the bed is too short but with a short bed truck you never have to help anyone move.Aug 06, 2008

I absolutely love my truck because it has lots of power but it is not the cheapest on fuel. The quality of the truck is fairly good as it has higher kilometers but still has no leaks or sweats under the truck. Also the truck has a canopy on it that is good in the winter but not so much in the summer. Hopefully soon it will have a spray-in box liner and the canopy will be off.Aug 06, 2008

You don't know R/T unless you own R/T! It's perfect size, performs like most sports cars, very reliable and useful and averages 15.5 mpg. This is not for heavy hauling though, keep in mind. Use the bed as a trunk and if you must tow, keep it under 1500lbs. Mopar or no car babyJul 31, 2008

This is the 2nd Dakota I have owned and will probably get another one. This truck is fantastic for a less than full size truck. I have 134K on it and have only had to replace the power steering pump and upper ball joints.Jul 03, 2008

this is one hell of a truck the v8 engine makes enough power to spin the tires off the line and still squawk second.the v8 also gets decent mpgs i avg.16-18 mpgs. the interior is great from the drivers seat every thingis in reach and the seats hug u. the back seat how ever isnt the best place to put more then 2 of ur friends that are full grown for a long time if its 3 of u i found that seating side ways in back works the best and is really comfy. the stock stereo is great but lacks some deep bass that some stock systems can produce. the truck handles exllect for being a truck. being a 2wd 5spd manaul trans the clutch feel great nice and frim not soft and not to hard the u have to stand on it.when shift there is not a problem expet 3 and 5 are so close its easy to get it in 5 when u think u hit 3 until u get used to it. the exeterior looks body has a nice flowing body lines and looks great with what ever u want to do if u want to lower it or lay frame it looks good or if u want it to be a drag racing truck it looks good or it to be lifted sky high covered in mud it will still look good as for reliabilty it has never felt me stranded on the side of the road. the only down side to this trucck is the ford and chevy trucks have a greater aftermarket support but the dakota isn't far behind them in the mod worldMar 26, 2008

swapping a 318 into a 4.7
I have 2002 dakota 4wh dr automatic.The motor blew on my stock 4.7 and i DO NOT want to put another 4.7 in it do to the problems they have (timing chain &guides go bad,head gaskets etc.)I want to know if anyone has put a 318 (5.2 or 5.9)360 in a dakota.I mean i obviously know it can be done and im not worried about swingin the engines,my concern and question is,arent all the electronics different? Intake,exhaust manifolds etc.I do not wanna change out wire harnesses and every friggin other item including the ones i havent mentioned....PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Security System Override
Security system is set on the truck and the fobs do not work. The CTM was just replaced and the fobs had not been reprogrammed. Can't use the truck until the fobs can be reprogrammed and can't do than until the security system can be turned off. Thank You!
