The stuff of fantasies, daydreams, and a million blown-out birthday candle wishes, the Audi TT didn't see many changes in 2002. And why should it? Even though it's not a racer per se, it looks like one, and isn't image more important than substance these days anyway? Not to say that the 2002 Audi TT doesn't perform. Available as either a Coupe or convertible Roadster, the TT comes with a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine tuned to either 180-hp or 225-hp. While the 180-hp is standard front-wheel drive, the 225-hp is standard with quattro all-wheel drive (the 180-hp Coupe has a quattro option) ABS brakes, traction control, and an electronic stability program are standard for all trims.
In 2002, to celebrate its entry into the Le Mans circuit, Audi issued a limited number of ALMS TTs (American Le Mans Series), a souped up version of the 225 coupe with larger 18-inch high performance tires and special badging.
The 2002 Audi TT is all about touring in style. Not only does the combination of the 225-hp engine and quattro technology ensure confident and road-gripping handling on back roads, but the interior luxury cocoons you in the sleek bubble that is the aluminum-bodied TT. It seats four, but the backseat is put to better use folded down for extra trunk space. In the Roadster, the soft top stores in the trunk, cutting down on capacity. New in 2002, an in-dash CD changer replaced the odd behind-the-driver's-seat changer in previous TTs. Heated seats were available, to keep you warm even with the top down.
The 2002 TT gets praise for its expert and nimble handling. Though not mind-blowing fast, it is powerful and sporty enough to raise the neck hairs on the average driver. Most owners think it is the most beautiful, unique, and sexy car on the road. The large trunk in the Coupe is a big surprise, and many enjoy the sporty exhaust sounds. Criticisms seem to focus on the TT's unreliability and time spent in repair shops and dealing with poor Audi customer service. Performance-wise, there is a noticeable turbo lag, though once it gets up to speed, the Audi is impressive. Owner would like better-placed cupholders and power seats and more engine power in general. There are reports of rattling at high speeds and over bumps.

Even though it’s the 1.8L version it’s still an excellent classic sports car. I appreciate the AWD (even though it’s only AWD whenever the car needs extra traction)The gearbox feels great and the turbo whine is loud when you put your foot down. If you’re a first time sports car owner I would recommend the TT. Just know you’ll probably be the smallest car on the road. Oct 16, 2023

This is a great little sports car. Suprisingly roomy. It has a simple interior but lots of features that surprise you. I have never driven a car that handles as well as this one does in the snow, ice and rain with it's all wheel drive. I picked it up used at a bargain but it seems the repair bills are always in the thousands of dollars. Sep 16, 2014

I've had this car personally for 8 years, but have loved the design when it was first introduced in 1998. It's still timeless to this day! There's not many cars that can stand the test of time (design wise) in the way the TT has.Jun 14, 2014

Loved everything, disliked nothing. Reliable starting, handling. Exhaust has a great sound/growl when accelerating. Chose FWD because I do not drive it in winter so quattro wasn't necessary. Hard tonneau cover also included with car as well as valet key.Jan 30, 2012

Little bit of turbo lag, but after it kicks in will really rip. brakes good. Handles AMAZING! good build quality lots of nice little luxeries for its year. 25 mpg average, and requires 91 octane fuel. Overall good little car if you dont need to take much with you.Nov 13, 2011

Nice handling but back seats are only for design ... nobody can stay in the back :), very reliable, allways gas hungry but with a lot of resources and different mods that you may apply.

Great, fun little car. True sports car look/feel, great handling and solid performance. Only know is way too many "goofy" rapairs like glove box mechanism ~$800, automatic window ~$300. horn ~250, who builds a car where a horn goes out?? Glove box? Performance - quickest 1.8 on the road, handling was great breaking great.
Build Q - was ok , needed a few pricy repairs around the 4 - 5 year / 60- 70k miles mark, electrics not quite up to scratch.
Appearance - excellent, design, award winner.
Cost of ownership - relatively low due to low tax (1.8) and insurance 123.ie and quite economical if you know how to drive.

Good design, catchy...love the all-wheel drive excellent
handling! Interior and exterior are both great quality. Cost of
ownership is a little high since the dealership kills you on all
parts. Some parts are available through the after market but
not most. It is definitely a fun car to drive and although I

Going through 2nd childhood..This is one of best fun cars i've driven.Drove 2500miles around europe in 7 days with no problems.Suspension a bit hard.Held the hairpins in alpine passes like stuck to tarmac.Have had car 2 years with no serious problems(bulbs).Solid build.expensive to run,but hey,It's a 2 seater sports car.Jan 20, 2009

I just loved the original TT from the first I saw it on
the road. Such a beautiful design. With the high
belt line and low height it was so different from
anything else on the road. Performance was so so,
even with the top of the line 2.0 litre turbo 225hp
version. Audi later came out with a higher power
naturally aspirated model that eclipsed the 225,
and we had one of those for a short time, too, but
even that left something to be desired in terms of
power and acceleration.
But this car was art on wheels, and it was compact
and super fun to drive on twisty country roads. I
miss this car more than any I have ever owned, even
more than the S4...although I do really miss the hp
in the S.
Maybe some day I'll own another TT... the new S or

Great 4 season sports coupe... this car is a good performance value when buying used. The visibility isn't as good as a Porsche 911, and it doesn't have a sun roof which makes the cabin a bit dark. Great in the winter with all wheel drive, and it get good fuel economy.Jan 11, 2009

Oh, where to start. Love my 2002 TT ALMS! Striking
design that influenced just about every car that came
after it. Amazing performance and fuel economy from
a tiny 1.8 liter engine. It has an incredible interior,
lipstick-red leather with beautifully crafted aluminum
accents. I keep it in pristine condition, it looks just like

Performance – Fast but faster when the turbo kicks in. Properly quick when brought to stage 2.
Build Quality – The germans know how to do it and Audi does it best.
Appearance – Can you say the 1st prototype to production car out there?
Cost of Ownership – Good mileage for a heavy car.

The drive of the car is superb, handles like a true sports car and has all of the power to back it up too.
Build quality is what has become expected from an Audi with no squeeks or rattles even after four years.

This was an AMAZING car. It was the one car I have owned that I fell in love with at first sight! It had style by the bucketload, it turned heads when I drove past people in the street, and it ran like "sugar off a shovel"!
I traded it in for the Volksvagen Jetta I now own because it was too small for anyone apart from me, a small passenger and a couple of people with no legs (the back seat was useless for carrying passengers!)Mar 31, 2008

Don't let anyone tell you an Audi is reliable. Broken switches, faulty indicators three times, broken heated seat switches twice, creaking suspension, the list goes on. Looks nice, dull as dishwater to drive. The 1.8 engine does not have enough torque for such a heavy car, so it doesn't feel like it has 225bhp.Mar 27, 2008

Absolutely amazing car. True the convertible is a bit of a WAGs model, but this 225bhp coupe is not only blindingly quick (0-60mph in just over 6sec) but the handling is also phenominal. Interior styling is also brilliantly 'retro'.Jan 06, 2008
