A great compromise between family car and truck, the Dodge Durango is a mid-size SUV that can haul up to 7300-pounds, has 88 cubic inches of cargo space, but doubles nicely as a family car to haul kids, sports equipment, or groceries. Both mom and dad will like the look and amenities of the Dodge Durango, but the poor gas mileage and unreliability might turn them away.
The 2001 Durango discontinued the standard 5.2-liter, 230-hp available in 2WD. All models received the 4.7-liter, 235-hp V8 as the standard engine, which means this SUV can haul with the best of them if it has to. On top of the SLT, the SLT plus adds more luxurious options. The Sport trim features sportier options, 15-inch wheels, and badges. The R/T performance trim, in addition to featuring the 5.9-liter, 245-hp V8 engine, adds body-colored moldings, sport-tuning, and leather and suede-accented interior.
The interior gets a more car-like update for 2001, including a new dashboard and a redesigned center console and steering wheel. Lots of storage room, the biggest interior in its class, and an easily accessible third row of seats (seating for seven) makes this a great SUV for families or short carpools.
The 2001 Durango is a mixed bag. It offers the volume and power of a full-size truck, but takes corners like a sedan, making it a great all-purpose vehicle, whether doing chores, transporting a heavy load, driving in the city, or on a long trip. The two aspects that most drivers love about the Durango is its power and its big-rig look. While it's a nice alternative to a minivan or a pickup, complaints pile up about the rough ride, repair visits, and its poor safety rating (not enough airbags). The cramped third row seating is not comfortable for adults on long rides.

We love the appearance of first generation Durangos.. The real only downside to this vehicle is the fuel economy. But that is Dodges normal thing. Fair trade off for me though. Don't know if ours is the exception to the norm but we find it very comfortable for long or short trips.. It is the AWD version and has a ver good suspension. As far as maintenance goes it has been the norm as for most vehicles. We just have nothing bad to say about it.....Mar 22, 2015

I have had this car for eight years now and cannot find anything I like as well to replace it with. The new Durangos just don't have the same look and feel as the older ones and other trucks are either much too big or look like stations wagons on steroids.Feb 04, 2014

Just got my 2001 Dodge Durango a few weeks ago to use as my winter driver. It's too early for a total review but so far so good. I'm going to keep it under 5,000 miles a year on this and I'm hoping to get at least 30,000 miles out of this truck without any major issues. I guess we'll see.Dec 21, 2013

The only thing I didn't like was the fast that you can't get a suspension lift for a Durango in 2001 to 2003, and that it didn't have a HEMI option. Other than that, like I said, for the 235hp it's rated at, 11.5 mpg isn't very exciting. Is capable of hitting 16 to 17 mpg on the highway if you keep your rpms under 2500.Nov 26, 2013

i love this ride!!! its got room for everything and strong enough to pull anything. i can take it anywhere on road or off road. i would recommend this vehicle to anyone. if i got rid of it i'd definitly get another.

I bought my Durango new and I've had it ever since (11 years and 120K miles). I love the curvy fender style and the comfort of the interior space and seating. I have had to put some work into it over the years, mostly normal maintenance items (brakes, tranny, differentials, A/C recharge, etc). The main issues I have had are on the transmission. I had to get it replaced at about 60K miles and now at 120K miles, it is starting to slip again. It has been a really good vehicle for my family, holding lots of cargo and people as my kids have grown up and we've taken it on numerous tips to mountains, plains and deserts. It does great in the snow and has great power to make it over mountain passes or trails, with the 5.9L engine. I have been very happy with my Dodge, with the exception of the poor gas mileage. I get 13- 14 mpg in the city and 14 - 15.5 on the highway (not much difference). In general, I can recommend the Durango as a good general purpose SUV.
** UPDATE **
I bought a newer used car to be a daily driver. Now my daughter uses this truck. While she does not like that is has poor gas mileage and would prefer something smaller, she loves the 4x4 capabilities in the Colorado winter. She feels confident driving the Durango and goes on trips to the mountains with her sister and friends for snow boarding. It is still a solid vehicle and performs well with modest maintenance.Aug 17, 2012

cant stand these durango's. always something broken. transmissions never last.
but it did have very comfy interior and rode nice when it did drive, and lots of room
to haul the goods. motor i had was a 5.9L and sure did have alot of get up and go

this thing does everything. its the weekend party wagon, fitting up to 7 people, but gets me to work in comfort. the stereo keeps you entertained and the R/T package its what makes this truck what it is. from towing 8000lbs to drifting in the snow, this truck does it all with ease. Dec 06, 2010

The performance is AWSOME. Braking is good. Handles very well.
No repairs I have only had it for 2 yrs no problems with it at all.
Good gas milage.
Fun to drive.

bunch of stuff with and great build quality. Perfect especially if you take care of it.
Its been in family for going on 10 years and has 167000 almost 168000 miles. Not

It has more than enough power under the hood. Owned ot for excess of 4 years and have yet to have any major repairs. ) Had to replace fuse once in a while, bought 1 set of times, replaced a fuse when needed. The car has given me very few problems over the years. The engine is so strong it impresses me. I can burn most cars out of the light. The paint has been scratched but it doesnt look bad. It is great fun to drive. I highly recommend it. Mar 10, 2010

I love my Durango. It has a V8 Magnum Engine. Very nice
acceleration. So far I haven't had to replace anything other
than a headlamp bulb. It does pretty decent on the gas
usage. Also wonderful for when I have the kids in the vehicle

the only performance problem I had was with the breaks. It ate gas like it was water. I think the interior was very study and tough being that I had children in the car. The automatic model selection had no trim levels. My Durango was an SLT with the 4.7L V8. I really enjoyed it, but when gasoline started approaching $4.00 per gallon, I decided it was no longer economical to drive, so I traded it for my '04 Explorer. In retrospect, I should have kept it. The MPG wasn't that bad considering its size and weight. I got between 14 and 19 MPG overall.
I liked everything about it, except the little irritating clickety-clack the valvetrain components made on a cold start. Other than that, the 4.7L V8 was the "little engine that could"...It would out-muscle engines of much larger displacement and horsepower ratings. Transmission was excellent, though a little mushy feeling. It never gave me trouble though. The interior was somewhat utilitarian looking and very truck-like. This comes as no surprise since the Dakota pickup is its sibling. I'd definitely recommend a 1st gen (1998-2003) Dodge Durango to anyone.Jun 21, 2009

I Bought my Durango used, and although it was high maintenance at first to fix what the previous owner didn't take care of, This vehicle is the best overall vehicle I've ever owned. It is sure footed at all sane speeds, has more power than it needs, and will cruise at 70 miles an hour all day long. Keep oil and coolant right and I think it'll last forever. The 4.7 does not like engine Heat! The body style is one I've always liked, much more than the newer ones, and the fit, finish and design of the interior is outstanding. It should have disc brakes on the rear as well as the front, but although not the best, the equipment works very well with only normal maintenance. I have 82000 miles on this little gas ( 16-18 mpg)hog highway tank, and hope to put a lot more on it. Haven't had it in mud, but pushed snow with the front bumper while hunting up in Northern Vermont. I would highly reccommend this vehicle for any one who takes pride in owning a good vehicle, and doesn't mind a weekend here and there maintaining it.Apr 17, 2009

In this time of gas bouncing between 3 and 5 bucks a gallon, I wonder why I would keep this 2.5 ton SUV around. But in weighing the difference between a new car payment and a little extra for gas, this Durango is a keeper. (It's paid for!!!!! Yay!!!)
It is a fabulous freeway cruiser as long as the road is smooth. The leather seats are very comfortable. Especially when we do the 2200 miles to Missouri and back. I've put a K&N cold-air kit on and it lets you hear and feel the 4.7 V8 when you get heavy on the go pedal. It doesn't breathe hard when you push it up a steep mountain grade.
It doesn't come up very often, but it is very nice to have the 3rd row of seats. The back is mostly for the kids, but it has room for 7 when needed.
A few minor electrical issues, and a broken rear-end gear, but other than that is has been a great vehicle.
I average between 15 and 18 mpg in mixed driving. I also think it is better looking than the new Durango.Nov 11, 2008

I personally think the first gen Durango is one of the SUV's that can fit almost anywhere and is a good overall SUV. It has some power when you need to pass and has great looks IMO. Why does my Fuel pump stop pumping after 10 seconds
I need help with a fuel pump cause i cant afford $300 part + replacment The pump will run and pump fuel for about 10 seconds at which time it will still run but but the fuel will stop flowing and get a bunch of air from INSIDE the pump and sit at the exit tube . Im testing it in a bucket of fuel now but its acting the same way as in the tank. I see no way to get the pump out of the plastic housing for the cheapes replacement I see no debri , filter is clean and it starts off fine. Its just when it gets to that 10 second point the rpms raise a little, the flow will slowly pulsate and the line starts filling with bubbles. Yes there is plenty of fuel in the car and bucket. Any ideas???
