Experts agree, this is arguably the most beautiful modern era BMW ever made. HOWEVER , the sunroof drains can, and will, leak. The water will then run down behind the dashboard on the passenger side and soak /burn up the FUSE BOX that some genius BMW engineer mounted on the floor, under the carpeting. The timing chain guides are plastic. The engine oil interacts with the guides and makes them brittle. Mileage doesn’t matter, time does. After 20+ years, the guides will break. The timing chain jumps a tooth and a piston slams into a valve and PRESTO- you just turned your engine into a boat anchor. Guide replacement will run around $4k from an Indy BMW mechanic. Oh, and while the mechanic has the whole front end pulled apart, have him replace the coolant pipe o-rings. Again, the genius’s at BMW ran a coolant pipe THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE ENGINE. If the gasket fails you’ll get coolant in your oil and then the fun begins all over. Also, these cars are very heavy, with an extreme forward rake and short front suspension. Be prepared to replace control arm bushings on a regular basis.
Now the interior. The final resistor for the A/C fan is BEHIND and IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DASHBOARD. Repllacing it requires you to remove the ENTIRE dashboard. Once the dashboard is out, it’s literally a one minute job to replace the final resistor. Then you can reinstall all 50 of the screws and fasteners that hold the dashboard together.
I could go on and on, but I’d be here for days. In all fairness, BMW are not made to be easy or inexpensive to maintain. BMW’s are made for rich folks to drive the crap out of them for 4 years then trade them in before they start breaking down. That’s the reason resale prices on BMW’s are so low and there’s a ton of them on the market.
But hey, they’re pretty to look at.
I’ve owned 8 BMWs. My E38 was by far the most beautiful, but also the most expensive to maintain. Nov 23, 2023

Per BMW of North America; the 01’ E38 740IL is the absolute best 7 series ever built. The 01’ is the last year of the body style and it was first introduced in 95’. This new purchase will be the third one that I will have owned. Very nice car!Feb 21, 2023

Has great performance and unparalleled options for a 2001 if in excellent condition. Most will require replacement of plastic and rubber parts all around: will require alot of labor and hard to find parts costing more than the current value. For enthusiasts/mechanic could be more than worth it. Has an E38 exceptionally well designed engine.Sep 02, 2022

Have owned 2 2001 7s, both w/sport packages. Best road cars Ive ever owned. The ride & quietness of the cabin cant be matched with dual pane glass. Looking to replace my il that was T-boned by a red light runner. It had 116,000 mi and couldnt be told from new. Figure 1,200 - 1,400 a year for maintenance, worth every penny!May 09, 2020

I love the 7 series. I feel confident when driving this car. Car feels solid. It is comfortable to drive and ride in too. Wish there was more room in the front seat for my purse, you have to put it on the passenger side floor taking up space for their personal item and feet. Apr 03, 2015

It's a GREAT car. I'd recommend buying one. The engine is amazing with
the 4.4 liter V8. It helps to have a good job if you need to replace things,
but when you do i'd recommend looking online for cheaper parts cause will
find them over going to the dealership. The Build quality is great it's
GERMAN! The looks of it are classic and inbodys the German fabricating at
the time. When I was looking this car up before I bought it, most of the web
sites i used said it would average about 14mpg, but that seems really hard to
do to get gas millage that low. I average right around 18mpg. It's a very fun
car to drive even being a a massive car, once you get going you can't even
tell that it is.I love my car and I love BMWs. and they love me.May 17, 2013

Performance is good and fun to drive. Quality built vehicle. Nice car inside and out. Gas mileage is OK. A vehicle that was a head of its time. Acceleration is there when you need it. Repair costs are high so go to BMW (European) certified mechanic - save $. Felt safe and in control of vehicle at all times.Mar 26, 2013

Nice and powerful, nimble for its size and weight. It is fairly quick on acceleration
but does suffer slightly in the corners due to sheer weight but for its size its
amazing! Classy, cool and good looking, its a 4.4 V8 so likes fuel, but it is worth it

Bought my 01" 740i Sport 2 years ago with 98K miles on it. I had the transmission fluid changed (450$ EEK), Spark Plugs, Belts, Coolant, you name it. Since then,..Have had no issues whatsoever! Car gets great highway mileage,..25 mpg or better if you keep it under 90mph. The car corners like a Vette, rides on the highway like a limo with the confidence of absolute control. The car still gets looks everywhere I go! I paid 13K$ out the door, invested $4K in preventative maintenance and I feel this beast will go at least another 150K miles. Interior seats are the most comfortable I've ever sat in. I do a 140 mile round trip daily and wouldn't consider driving anything else. With the economy the way it is,...What an outstanding value!!! petrol V8 has great power. Comfortable on the inside
and has plenty of compartments. My three favorite
features of the car the fold in mirrors, leveling HID

Great performance machine. Its fast, handles well, so perfectly balanced, It is as solid as the day it was new. All the interior materials and exterior body and trim has held up extremely well. Its just a comfortable great driving safe solid car. I am hoping that the new 2009 7 series will be such a car. The '02 generation while a great driving car, was an electronic mess. Sep 05, 2008

Very fast!! Av done 180miles per hour last year on the Autobahn in Germany as there is no speed limit there. Amazing car!!! It has all what someone would expect from a proper car!! I mean , space, comfort , speed and high tech and gadgets!!

Despite being a large car, it handles as well as a smaller five-series, and I get the same mileage (16-18 mpg) as a 530i I considered buying with the 3.0L V8. Has plenty of features: large trunk, massive back seat, and plenty of power. Highway mileage is good as well. I got around 29 MPG on the highway, and thanks to BMW active seat, I was able to drive ten hours without stopping, even with my bad back.
The 4.4L V8 offers plenty of power, even for a heavy car such as this. The braking is acceptable. For handling, curves can be enjoyed at high speeds with little body roll.
I've required one repair, when the radiator sprung a leak at the top. Repairs can be expensive, with my mechanic quoting radiator prices at upwards of 450 dollars. I found an OEM Behr radiator for 175, so with installation, it was still around the same as I paid for the replacement in my Ford F150.
The car is heavy, and feels solid. The doors are quite weighty, and i've encountered no squeaks and rattles.
On styling, i'm partial to this car because I prefer lines as compared to curves on autos. The interior's styling is comfortable and upscale, with BMW using the better rubberized dash and wood grain, as compared to many plastic-fantastic interiors on other cars.
My well-maintained 740iL is a wonderfully fun car to drive, and i'm still in love with it, even after the honeymoon is over. Jul 22, 2008

My Bimmer is actually the 2000 740i. Baby is 8 years old with 150k on her, but I still love it. For a ful size car she can move! Tracks curves like a rollercoaster. Comfortable to cruise along for hours. Seats five without a problem, though I rarely have more than three in it. I know I need to trade her in for something soon, but very few cars out there strike my fancy the way Baby does! BMW redesigned the 7 Series after this model, and NO ONE likes it. The new body style is due out for '09 with a return to the classic lines of my car. We'll see.....Jul 14, 2008

Always wanted one for the looks. Love the smooth and strong engine and the transmission. The fit and finish is good. Too many things break though and I am constantly trying to catch up. Details show good ideas but bad execution. Window lifters are a maintenance items with the same interval as brakes. Ashtray and other mechanical trim pieces fail or fall off. The radio is not up to par with Audi/Mercedes/Lexus. Does not work without the ignition key. Cruise control is overly complicated, has to be turned on every time the car is started.
Key charges itself in the ignition but of course doesn't last forever. $200 replacement. I can't get the sunroof wind noise fixed. I am getting bored with this car and think about selling after owning for 3 years. Jun 18, 2008

I was driving car when a loud ticking was very noticeable, then I lost all oil pressure and immediately stopped and shut off car. after 100 mile tow put car on lift and dropped oil pan. and I see pieces of plastic in pan and top oil pump chain is loose but still connected. what do you think I should look at next? and what could it be????? thanks

I have a 2001 bmw 740i with 129,000 miles on it. A few times a week I get a blue/ gray plume of smoke when I start the engine. Is this serious? I know I have a small leak in the oil pan so I monitor my oil level. Could that be the cause? Is there an oil leak somewhere else possibly? How quickly do I need to get this checked out?
