Making any serious headway into a saturated market constitutes a challenge for just about anyone. Saturn embarked on its belated journey into the midsize market in 2000 with the L-Series. This new model sought to deliver a reasonably priced alternative to established industry leaders such as the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. The 2000 Saturn L-Series comes in 5 trims: the LS, LS1, and LS2 Sedans, along with the LW1 and LW2 Wagons.
The LS, LS1, and LW1 use a standard 2.2 L, 135 hp I4 engine while the LS2 and LW2 use a 3.0 L, 182 hp V6 engine. All trims seat 5 with the LS and LS1 allowing you to choose between 5 speed manual transmission or 4 speed automatic. The LS2, LW1, and LW2 use 4 speed automatic. Fuel consumption ranges from 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway for I4 manual, 23 mpg city/32 mpg highway for I4 automatic, and 20 mpg city/26 mpg highway for V6 automatic. Cargo space comes out to an industry leading 17.5 cubic feet in the sedans and 29.4 cubic feet in the wagons.
Drivers appreciate the handling and roomy interior in the 2000 Saturn L-Series. Comfortable seats and the plentiful cargo space add to the driving experience. Experts agreed that the most daunting challenge came from getting the word out on a solid new domestic midsize to everyone who thought Saturn only made compact cars. While sales initially lagged, Saturn felt optimistic that the new line's style could catch up to its substance.

maintenance you cant do from home. oil filter is paper element unlike regular oil filter on many cars today. transmission cant be checked as usual and few other things as well.
most maintenance done at garage now.
other than overall rating i do like the car for its fuel mileage from factory at 32 mpg. however today's mileage would be a tad less under optimal maintenance serving if you can afford
it. many garages charge more for simple things now a day. ie:600.00 for spark plug changing for 3.0 dohc or dohv engine for thi car. Oct 29, 2014

The luxury leather and wood trim make it special. Heated seats are very nice. Smooth ride is comfortable. Love the extra space in the wagon. Gas millage proved very good, especially for a 6 cylinder! Power windows are a definite plus.

I bought this car with v-6 and 144,000 miles. The only reason I bought a car with that many miles is that it was in excellent condition and I had owned an S-series for 2 1/2 years prior. Very clean inside and out and oil looked clean at 3,000 miles so I assumed it had received all needed maintenance and was well cared for. That was 14 months ago.
To this point, I have spent more in repairs than I did for the car. Currently, it is in the shop for a broken coil pack causing a miss in the engine, a recurring heater problem (it doesn't work), an transmission issue (SERVICE with a wrench beside it), and the service engine light.
While this car is very fun to drive, it has been very, very costly to maintain. It seems like when you fix something, 2 more things go wrong. In 14 months we have had very little trouble free time with this car. However, my wife loves it, so I guess we will go broke hanging onto it a while longer.
Had to replace some weird stabilizer bar on the rear wheel when I got it aligned the first time (wheel was tilted and inside of tire was wearing). Timing belt, water pump, O2 sensor, EGR valve and other things have already had to be replaced on this car. I'd have to look at my receipts to list everything. And for as many squeks and rattles as it has, I wonder how it stays together. Still, a very fun car to drive.
The absolute best we have gotten for gas mileage is just over 27 mpg, so there are plenty of cars that do better. My S-series gets 34 mpg, unless you are going 80 mph, then it drops to about 30.Jan 21, 2010

Teh car is pretty good for make like Saturn.I thing people
are underestimating the Saturns. Performance is great,
the 3.0 V6 offers a lot of power, this car pills tires like
crazy. The automatic transmission responds perfect. Build
Quality is high, despite that I bought the car used, I only
replaced the blower motor for the heating, noting
else(Probably I'm lucky:)).
The parts are way cheaper than the ones for my old
car(Audi A4), which nowadays it is very important:) For
cheap car, my Saturn has everything from leather seats to
traction control-fully loaded with extras. This is was the S-
class of Saturn. Definitely better gas millage than the Audi
A4(despite that the engine of the Audi was smaller-2.8
V6). For the four mounts I have the car, no money were
spent on maintenance(accept the Blower motor-$300). It
is definitely a fun to drive if you like the pilling tires noise:)Dec 11, 2009

Was a great car for the family when it was smaller - but with only seating for 5, a family of 6 with a dog just doesn't work, does it?
I really liked the CD player - really good sound from the 4 speaker set-up.
Minor issues with the interior trim - specifically the 'arm rests' on doors - the thinner plastic couldn't take my elbow too well, and it cracked under mild pressureNov 29, 2009

This is the worst car anyone can buy. The doors are plastic, yea they might be dent resistant but they will break if somebody leans on it. The door handles on the inside break about as easy as a pencil. It eats through oil like it's its job. It eats through Trans fluid like no other. I have to change the oil every month, give or take, and I put the best oil in it too. I have to fill up the Trans with fluid about every month and a half, two months. The windows go off their track if somebody knocks on them too hard. My air conditioning broke a week after the warranty was over. My power steering pump broke four times since I’ve had the car. I got into an accident and messed up the whole front end of my ca and the air bags didn’t go off. It is a very unsafe car because there is a different problem with it every time I get the last one fixed also because it is plastic. Although I do have to say that it is good on gas and also a very fast car for being about as reliable as a matchbox toy car. Do not buy a Saturn! They are one of the worst cars you could buy.Oct 02, 2009

This car has over 146,000 miles and still runs as well as when I bought it. The only major work done has been replacement of ignition switch (at time of purchase) and new hood latch. The 4-cylinder is great on gas (32-36 mph on highway) and has great tork.Jun 26, 2009

This has been a great car. Bought it with 10 miles and it now has over 175k miles and has now been passed on to my daughter as I feel it is reliable and safe enough for her. Have only had to perform regular maintenance. Had to have the transmission redone around 150k. Grandparents have had Saturns, husband had a Saturn. Been very reliable. Aug 16, 2008

I dislike that it seems everytime I turn around something else is wrong with it. I've spent more in repairs than I have in actual payments and it's very frustrating. I like the look and design of the car, just not the overall quality. The car gets great gas mileage and that is the biggest reason for keeping it around.Aug 14, 2008

It is a 1996, and I have been in 3 accidents (none of which is my fault) and it has been very reliable! It doesnt rust, It had a sun roof, but it leaked so I had to seal it shut :( I only paid 4000 for it and so far I have over 155000 miles on it and it still runs great!Jun 28, 2008

Bought at a Used Car dealership, it was my first (of two) cars. It had some issues, probably cause it was a used car (broken headlights, electrical problems with lights). It had great gas mileage (probably up to the 30/mpg), but that was probably the greatest thing about it.
It got in 2 accidents; the first it suffered major cosmetic damage due to kissing a guard rail on the highway. The second it never survived, and was deemed totaled after headbutting a car (whoops). RIP!
Great as a transitional car, though I really don't like Saturns'. After the first accident, there was still issues with the frame that never really got fixed. May 29, 2008

It's an okay car! I bought it 3 years ago and haven't had a whole lot of problems. Sometimes when I don't have air or heat on and I stop at a light it acts like it's going to die! And then today I noticed a strange signal light come on! Looks like an arrow pointing down towards water or a mountain top, it's weird!Jul 22, 2007
Does anyone know the specs I would need in order to replace a rear strut on a 2000 Saturn L-Series I plan on buying? Also, just a general question, would any type of radio replace to one in there?
My 2000 saturn wagon high beams come on while parked and nobody around, all at random times. Also, when switching my turn signal on again the high beams come on and almost impossible to switch off
