2003 Saturn L-Series Preview summaryImage

2003 marked the last model year for the traditional 5 trim Saturn L-Series before it changed its name to the L300. The main changes from 2002 involved eliminating a trim and touching up the exterior and interior. After eliminating the L100, 4 trims remained: the L200 and L300 sedans, and the LW200 and LW300 wagons. Sunroof comes as an option only on the sedans and the L-Series has done away with ABS brakes and traction control. Otherwise, the 2003 L-Series has stayed true to its roots. The 200 trims use a 2.2 L, 135 hp I4 engine while the 300's use a 3.0 L, 182 hp V6 with 4 speed automatic transmission. All trims seat 5, with sedans giving you 17.5 cubic feet of cargo space and wagons giving you 33.5 cubic feet. The 200's get you 24 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway while the 300's get you 21 mpg in the city, 29 on the highway. Standard features for all trims include power windows, power door locks, and cd player. Leather seats come as an option on all trims with a sunroof comes as an option on the sedans. Overall, Saturn made steady progress with the L-Series' mechanics while shuffling around the trim names. As with earlier models, the 2003 Saturn L-Series gets high marks for affordability and and value. Consumers would still like to see better design in the interior and less cabin noise. In addition, drivers do not like the Firestone tires that come with the car. Most reviewers would agree that the Saturn L-Series did well to present Saturn compact owners with a solid upgrade. Only time would tell if Saturn could make the necessary adjustments as it sought to identify with a broader audience.

I absolutely love this car. I've had it for about 4 years and it has been very dependable. I've had minor work done such as brakes and getting the A/C fixed and it's held up very well. It's an amazing car.Jan 18, 2014

I like this car because it is very dependable. No trouble what so ever other than getting a new battery, break pads, and the belt changed. It has ease of movement and is very comfortable and good on gas mileageMar 20, 2011

This is a fantastic appliance vehicle. It gets very good gas mileage for a midsize. I have seen up to a 34 mpg tank average on long trips (San Antonio and back on one tank, A/C off). The only repair it has needed was a new A/C compressor because the electric clutch burned out and was not separately replaceable. The compressor swap took about an hour, and was incredibly easy. Although I have not done much in the way of repairs, all maintenance tasks were pretty trivial and everything appears to be laid out in an easily accessible way. Utility is decent, although the cargo space is not as ample as my former Roadmaster (which this car replaced), it is still sufficient for all of the hauling tasks I've had to date, and the roof rack is there for plywood or mattresses. It is comfortable, and while not powerful, it is sufficiently quick to keep up with Texas traffic or cruise at 75 comfortably. Steering is light, and the chassis's responsiveness feels more like a compact than a mid-size. This particular model also has a decent set of features that I wouldn't expect on a true economy car. Cruise control, auto-headlights, traction control, side curtain airbags, keyless entry + alarm, power locks and windows. It's no luxury car, but I've long since learned that luxury does not equal reliability or ease of repair. Sep 15, 2009
