Making headway in the competitive midsize market takes time and the 2002 Saturn L-Series reflects Saturn's slow and steady approach to developing its product. The most noticeable upgrades from 2001 involved standardizing previously optional features for all trims. Consumers could now get front curtain airbags, ABS brakes, automatic headlights, and traction control without paying extra. In addition, L200 and L300 consumers could get a special audio package with a 6 cd changer. Otherwise, the 2002 L-Series sticks with its basic 5 trims: the L100, L200, and L300 sedans, along with the LW200 and LW300 wagons. Saturn has eliminated the standard 5 speed manual transmission in the L100 and changed to standard 4 speed automatic. All trims seat 5 with cargo space coming in at 17.5 cubic feet for sedans, 33.5 cubic feet for wagons. The V6 trims have increased their fuel economy to 21 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, while the I4's still give you 24 mpg in the city, 33 on the highway.
Saturn has made its living with decent performance at an affordable price. However, owners do not like the stock Firestone tires. In addition, they would like to see a more stylish interior and less engine noise. These recurring issues indicate that the L-Series still has room to grow as it embarks on the long road to respectability.
