The 2000 Ford Focus was a heavily marketed attempt by the automaker to bring some of the phenomenal European success of its compact family cars back to America. The 1999 European version of the Focus was named the continent’s “Car of the Yearâ€Â; its styling and features drew on those of popular models like the Ford Ka, a market mainstay in the UK and Europe.
Ford introduced the 2000 Focus in North America as a replacement for its Escort line, and accompanied the launch with a media splash. In the US and Canada, though, the 2000 Focus had something of a bumpy start. With a buying public seduced by SUVs, this line of smallish sedans, wagons, and hatchbacks had trouble gaining traction in the North American market.
Basic trims available were a four-door sedan and a four-door wagon; a four-door "Sony Limited" sedan offered high-end audio equipment, while a two-door ZX3 hatchback and a four-door ZTS sedan relied on an upgraded engine and some luxury features to distinguish itself from the entry-level vehicles in the line.
The engine, a 110-horsepower, 2.0 liter four-cylinder model, didn't wow the public; the ZX3 and ZTS engine, which had dual overhead camshafts and put out 130 horsepower and 135 ft/lbft of torque, drew more guarded praise. To today's buyers, though, the fuel efficiency of the 2000 Ford Focus (from 28-33 mpg city, 23-26 mpg highway, depending on model) may be ample compensation for its less-than-impressive power.
The 2000 Focus came standard with five-speed manual transmission, anti-lock braking system, and dual dashboard airbags. Traction control was available as an additional option, as was automatic transmission.
Most reviewers found that the Focus handled well, if a little stiffly, with ample power for everyday highway and city driving. The Focus didn't stand out, though, in a market with plenty of other choices for basic family transportation.

i like the price, they are fairly cheap. Cheap on gas, and cheap to insure and register. The vehicle has a fair amount of space for smaller needs. Dislike the electrical problems and wheel bearing problems. Need to convert rear end to 05 or later disc set upFeb 16, 2015

Good everyday car, has the extra space if you need to haul something. Not bad on
the highway. Cheap to maintain but parts are in odd places. It has good get up
and go with the Zetec Engine. Wouldn't buy a duratec oneFeb 18, 2012

Performance - there is none
Build quality - it's a Ford, so it has its ups and downs
Appearance - it doesn't quite show it's age, so that's a good thing
Cost of Ownership - the occasional thing breaks or wears out, but is usually cheap
to fix. It does very good mileage
Fun Factor - it's quite fun to drive on occasion :)Oct 19, 2011

Almost 140,000 miles and no major problem. Why buy a new car when a few thousands added in aftermarket parts make it still turn heads on the street... I am looking forward to the next 140,000 miles :) Never had any problem, knocking on wood!!!Sep 04, 2010

Where can I start? The 2000 Focus is a complete solid car that can bring joy to anybody.
First, the performance:
The 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder, DOHC, Zetec engine produces 135 BHP and is fairly bullet proof, it will last for a long time. My Focus has done around 180,000 miles on all origional parts, except for gaskets and other parts that need replaced every couple of thousand of miles. Pretty good for a ten year old car! The engine is completely adaquate enough for everyday use and the occasional time when you feel like going fast. Despite this, the engine could do with just a tiny bit more power to add to the sportyness of the Focus. However, when you hit the GO pedal and you let the revs get up high, you will hear the sweet sound of the engine. It is phenominal.
The brakes on the Focus are unbelievably brilliant. All you need to do is tap the brake pedal and you stop very quickly. When you stop, put your face back where it belongs and keep going. The brakes stop you quick when you need it and slows you down when you need it. The stopping power is phenominal considering the brakes at the front are about 1 foot in diameter and the rears are drums.
The 2000 Focus is well built all round. It will keep its self composed for many years. I've recently replaced the suspension all round and the front rotors just to keep it as safe as it possibly can. After 10 years, the suspension is pretty soft instead of hard. Now that the replacements are on, the Focus sits about 2 inches higher than it did with the sagging, old ones on there. There was nothing wrong with the brakes, just replaced them so I know its safe and they'll last another life time. After 10 years though, the Air Conditioning Compressor is squeaking now, but from frequent use for 10 straight years, it is expected to happen, nothing can last forever. The car does not rattle, bang or anything else.
The Focus looks, to me anyway, really good. I like the way the rear lights are situated up high, not only to look more interesting, but so that they are more visible to the car following you. The side of the Focus had very interesting lines and you could spend hours looking around it looking at all the tiny curves, bends, and lines on it. The large headlights look good aswell as lighting up the road amazingly. The interior design is pure and also very interesting. The lines of the dask is unique and is oddly good looking. The gauges are very large and easy to read as well as being accutare. The gauges do need a readout for battery life though. Apart from that, they are brilliant. The way the seats feel are unbelievably comfortable. They hold you well when you are moving down the road.
One fo the best things about the Focus is that is is so cheap to run. $20.00 of fuel today will easily last you up to 2 weeks (depending on how you use it, of course). The Focus is incredibally easy to maintain. It will last you a while when you treat it right.
This car is a "hatchback", but it behaves as a sports car. It is really sporty to drive and it makes you forget that you are driving a hatchback. It shouldn't be called a hatchback; it should be called a "Sports Coupe".
To sum it all up, the 2000 Ford Focus ZX3 is one of the best cars out there today and gives you a feeling of joy that is unique in every way.Mar 01, 2010

This is the best car i have ever had. discription needs to be change on all 3 pics she's a ZETEC not a ZTS. This car will take anything you throw at it and will stick to the roads!
Performance wise she is great on the UK Motorways stick her in 5th and she just keeps getting fast with no trouble.
Apperance well pics speak for them selves she's great to look at outside inside is a little bland but still great,
Cost of ownership she's not that bad £30 a month on fuel shes her through.
Fun Factor, Nothing says fun like a Focus!!Dec 03, 2009

The car handles very well, it has been very reliable and gets incredible gas mileage. You can't beat it in snow, and it handles in wet and very wet conditions quite well. The interior is very spacious, and the trunk is absolutely cavernous.
This is a great car for trips, and a great car for around town. My next car will also be a focus.Oct 07, 2009

Great city/ commuting car. Acceleration was adequate with the 2 liter/ 16 valve Zetec engine (probably would have been a bit quicker if it weren't an automatic, but it handled well. Average gas mileage (24 mpg with mixed driving.) Reliable powertrain. Fun to drive... Good little car.Sep 05, 2009

with all around outstanding handling and braking. With the
custom paint job the appearance isnt too bad just needs a
new color. Great gas mileage and fun to drive around.Jul 21, 2009

Where to start: Well I do think the car has its issues. The transmission has been replaced and the shop did a terrible job. The car has absolutely no acceleration. However, after replacing several parts of the suspension, the car does handle pretty well.May 17, 2009

performance is quite good it has slight mods like k&n modified intake uprated front discs but it is non abs which is a big downer especially this time of year, acceleration ok if you can get the power down and its very revvy with the black top zetec much better engine than the earlier zetec no problems with valve or lambda sencor i ve had it for 12 months and covered 8000 miles not failed me yet, and not used a drop of oil, needed a wheel bearing for mot which was £15 and 10 mins work so no problem, fuel wise it gives me 35 to gallon and i would say im heavy footed so thats reasonable, build quality is exellent these more modern ford are much better built than earlier ones no rust the chassis is alley lined and wheel arches are plastic lined , inside the car is not too flash but it has power windows, pas, a/c, heated sceens, heated elec mirrors, it handles great for a car it size on the m way and round town its even better it just grabs the road and grabs it right, and the seats hold you just right and it quite comfortable, on the out side no major styling a set of diamond cut fox rs3 sit under the arches but the car need a drop of at least 50 mm its a 3 door so it looks sleeker and less grandad it just needs some tints and s/s exhaust. Incredibly solid car. The original clutch lasted for over 160,00 miles. Handles well, has a 2.0L 4 cyl. which is surprising quick (acceleration, speed, etc.). Has had very low maintenance costs and gets great fuel economy. Good looking car and (I own a sitck) fun to drive. Highly recommended. My mechanic has recommended it over many fancier european models.Oct 14, 2008

The only real complaint I have about my car is that the paint SUCKS!! It was poorly applied at the factory and now it's in the process of peeling off at the fenders; the hood looks like it has hair in it and the roof looks like it's been washed with sandpaper.
Performance-wise, the car is a blast to drive. It may not be the fastest machine to burn up a road, but the Focus corners like it's a go-cart. Braking leaves something to be desired, with small, single piston disc brakes in front and puny, almost embarassing drums in the rear. My particular car doesn't have ABS.
Cargo space is good, I can load up a week's worth of camping for me and my girlfriend, take lumber, move beds (up to queen-size!) or haul Ikea stuff home (if I take it outta the box and build it around my son)!
Fuel economy is good, I get about 500 kms out of a 50 litre tank, The best range I've obtined was 618 kms.
For a car that hardly costs anything to purchase, It's a stellar buy. Resale value (being an American car) is deplorable; you can buy a 2000 Focus these days for less than four grand Canadian. But, my cost of ownership is almost nothing. I've put on one set of tires, one set of brakes, one timing belt (it snapped at 200,000 kms), one ignition lock cylinder spark plugs (that was 100,000 kms ago-it's due again) and regular oil changes. It needs shocks at all corners and rear springs, but it's 8 years old with 212,000 kns on it, so I can't complain.
I would (and have!) recommend this car to anyone looking for something cheap, reliable, good on gas and most of all, FUN! to drive.Oct 13, 2008

This was my first car. It's nice looking and provides good service. Has a lot of room for passengers and in the trunk. The only drawback that I found was it's lack of acceleration. Services are economic. Has good fuel economy. I'd recommend it to a friend. Nice nice nice.Sep 10, 2008

Theres nothing i can say about this car that i hate, its really good overall, i bought it for room, as my children are in car seats, and they take up alot of room in the back, and with car seats in it gives plenty of leg room, the car is cheap on parts, cheap to run, and you get really good performance and mileage out of it the only reason im changing is coz i would likw something newer.
performance - the car does everything i want, theres plenty of power when i need it, the braking is excellent, and the handling is great
build quality - Ive a confession to make, ive had to do no repairs in over a year, tyres, exhaust are all A1 condition, its regularly serviced by the dealer, and they mention straight away if anything needs replacing and it hasnt, as i use this car with my family, i want everything perfect.
Appearance - As the car is nearly 8 year old, it looks abit dated compared to todays cars, hence why im upgrading, the interior is great, all the gadgets are easily accessible,
cost of ownership - CHEAP<CHEAP<CHEAP
fun factor - the car is great fun, its not a sports car but, handling and performance is great, on long journeys i find the car comfortable and easy to control - i would definately reccomend this car to a friend

I love this car, its very reliable and does get quite a good speed on it, its lovely to drive and in the 4 years i've had her the only things I have had to change are the tyres,
Would def recommend this car. It hasnt got a cd player though or a sunroof and i would have thought that the time of year it was built those features should have been standardAug 05, 2008

I have the 2.0L ESP Model in Panther Black which is kicking out 130bhp, as a result of this, will do 0-60 in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 140mph. Handling on this car is amazing! very fun to drive not too much roll in the corners and a lot of Grip! Well recomended!Jul 28, 2008

Good on gas, handles really well, built pretty well, quiet when i want it to be and not when i dont. Didnt cost me a fortune to buy. I would consider buying the new focus if they add more horse power under the hood, and dont mess with the handling.. aim for something like the svt focus but affordable would be nice.Jul 13, 2008

Whoever knocks on owning a hatchback should seriously consider a gen 1 Focus ZX3 (or equally fun to drive VW Golf/Rabbit/GTI). Sure it was a goofy looking pod for transportation, but the combination of a nearly flat, deep load floor and a straight roof made for superior hauling capability over most other compact cars on the road. With the seats folded up, it will swallow 5 people comfortably, 4 people and their golf clubs, or 3 people and luggage for a 10 day vacation (no lie). The interior design was equally as goofy as the exterior, and it was a sea of black plastic, however it proved durable over 5 years and 80k miles of ownership (from 2003-2008). The sound quality of the stereo was acceptable. The front seats actually proved quite supportive and more comfortable than one would expect from a small car.
The Zetec engine was eager, but hampered by the Ford 4-speed transaxle. Acceleration was anemic for highway merging, but the okay torque was completely adequate around town. Despite these woes, highway mileage was decent enough, and it didn't hunt for gears on hills at highway speed. Durability was acceptable, but not stellar. No major problems came up, however I had to remember that no matter how hard I push it, it will never be as fast as my Mustang or the Jags. Handling, on the other hand, was a major strong point for the car. It took corners with ease, very little body roll, or tire noise. The ride quality was equally impressive (even with the 16 inch alloys and 205/45R tires). Engine and wind noise were rather excessive at highway speeds, however a good set of tires can cure any road noise issues you may have.Jul 06, 2008

When the Focus first came to America after being out in Europe for a year, I was impressed by the bang-for-buck quality it had. After one test drive, I was in love with it after considering a Toyota Celica GTS. The aftermarket for parts took a while to get going, but once it did, it was relatively easy to change the things I wanted to. There were quite a few recalls in the first year or two, as can be expected with a car new to America. Since then, I have been thrilled with the reliabilty and gas mileage. The performance of the car is unmatched for cars in its category.Jun 30, 2008

Driving it is like having the best European car you can afford. Even though the brand is American, it doesn't behave like one which is nice. Everyone can get comfortable in this car with no problem and it is a very popular choice for car-pooling. I'd recommend this car to anyone. Jun 06, 2008

I have 2000 focus with zetec engine dohc. I am replacing heater core but forgot to note the hose connections. One hose connects from the heater core to the coolant pipe mounted on of the radiator. The second hose goes from heater core to thermostat housing. Which hose is supposed to get connected to the bottom tube of the core and which one is supposed to go on the top tube. Attached picture shows how the core sits when installed.
