1999 was a changeover year for the Volkswagen Golf, with some of the previous year's models still on sale for several months, and a new, next-generation version introduced later in the model year. With this new version, the Golf's body was enlarged slightly, the engine and interior were updated, and the list of standard features available throughout the line was expanded.
The new Golf GL hatchback got an updated 115-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, and came with a list of standard features that included power door locks, anti-lock brakes, dual airbags, air conditioning, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and an anti-theft alarm system.
A higher-end trim package, called the GLS, was also new for 1999. It was introduced with the same engine as the GL but additional standard features, such as power windows and cruise control. Also new for 1999 was a 90-hp, 1.9-liter TDI (turbo direct injection) diesel engine, which could be dropped into either the GL or GLS packages for drivers who wanted improved gas mileage.
Overall, drivers were impressed with the Golf's handling, smoothness over the road, comfort, and roominess. And while some drivers praised the overall build quality of the Golf, others noted frequent problems and reliability issues with the car.

This is a much improved VW compared to earlier models. Much more refined and comfortable and the engine is a new generation of refinement (1.6 liter petrol engine). It`s technically too small for me and the family, but it became available on attractive terms. Jun 09, 2012

German engineering is awesome, yeah, but when I get another car in a year or
so I'm upgrading to a BMW or Audi, or maybe even turning to a WRX STi.
Performance wise, 200 stock horsepower is nothing to complain about, and the
cars runs great. Shifts smooth. Build quality is ace, no needed repairs so far,
but I have only had the car for a short time now, so I guess we'll see. No
squeaks/rattles except for a bad ground wire SOMEWHERE for my subs. Cost
of ownership doesn't break the bank. And this car is a blast to drive. It's
basically 200 horsepower in a go cart. Sounds like fun, right?Nov 03, 2010

Drives well, no problems as it is a tdi, no repairs needed, good quality, no sqeuaks or rattles and drives smoothly and handles well. interior is of quality with velour trim and good miles on diesel, averaging around 40-50mpg. fun car to drive,Oct 07, 2009

Too many repairs, it has caused a lot of frustration over the years, but for some reason I am still wanting to hold on to it.
The car is pretty fun to drive. I enjoy having a decently small call that I'm able to zip around in, but I do wish a had more cargo space.... mind you, it is amazing how many things you can fit in a golf...Sep 19, 2009

German engineering ... tight tolerances. Either love it or hate it. My car is modified so it drives nothing like a stock TDI. 180 HP and 290 torque : )
900+ km to a tank ... cruise effortlesssy at 180km/h or so I am told.
Stock cars are great ... maintenance is still on high side
Would not recommend as second hand car unless you can perform some of the maintenance yourself or don't mind paying more for maintenanceJul 26, 2009

Out of the five vehicles I've owned in my lifetime
this
was the worst. A list of things that broke on this
vehicle:
1) fuel pump seal
2) fuel line ruptured
3) plastic window clips inside the driver/passenger
doors.
4) Thin rubber trim on the door handles wore off

Well for your 1st car you cant really complian..but hind =sght is a strange thing. the mk 4 is the worst golf ever made..it was to heavy and under steered badly. the engine was noisey when stationary and to took a good 10 minutes to reall warm up. netherless this car was bomb proof and you could give it some stick. all together you can't moarn that much it was my 1st car abd i'll never forget itJun 10, 2009

We just bought my daughter a 1999 Golf. WE LOVE IT!!! The Golf handles wonderfully and has alot a pick up for a smaller car. It is GREAT on gas!! Our daughter is 18 and this car fits her to a tee. We couldn't be happier!!!May 15, 2009

The MY first car.
My actual first car belonged to my older brother first but this one was MINE and ALL MINE.
Got it quite stock. Loved it that way. Fun to drive. Great looking car.
Soon i decided to start playing around with it... Dropped it with Bilstein Pro Kit Lowering Springs and added Tokico Blue shocks to that. Decided to buy some new shoes. 17-inch ROH Adrenalin mags added a nice look. Threw on a Magnoflow Catback exhaust and the beast was born... I loved driving it around... Loved listening to it... Loved looking at it...
A couple of little changes here and there (Eurostyle 'Angel-Eye' look headlights, GTI smoked taillights, tinted windows, GTI drivers seat, Sub/Amp...)

Very nice car by any means. Only some small engineering mistakes and lack of air conditioning. Engine is very nice (1.8t) and produces quite a bit of power for this sized car. It's also cheap to tune by programming and so on. Easy to achieve 200hp but after that it will turn expensive, cause you need to change turbo and stuff.Jan 07, 2009

Alt i udstyr, 18" Audi RS4 fælge malet i Dolphin black. For nyligt omlakeret i en meget mere mørk sort end den originale farve.
Tonede ruder hele vejen rundt. Formstøbte sæder, 4xelruder, 2x el sidespejle, varme i sæder, 2 delt klimaanlæg..

My Golf GT TDI is probably one of the best cars i have owned so far, it is very reliable and has the performance to match, with over 180 BHP!!. With the fuel prices continually rising too i am more than happy with the 50+ miles to the gallon it returns, so this makes it very practical and exceptional fun to driveAug 22, 2008

The VW Golf GTi is a overall good car with a few little weaknesses. The power of the turbocarged 1,8 litre engine is very nice, and the recaro leather storts seats come in handy, because the handling is good enough to throw you about a bit. The thing i dislike the most is build quality. Especially the interior is starting to make alot of rattling sounds. But apart from that. Fun car! =)Aug 12, 2008

A nice little car, that's is very nervous. It will give you a jump when you need it. Seems to be a dormant little thing but surprises you on how it handles. Never had a car that can handle winter driving like this one, without four wheel drive. i can't wait to buy my GTI!!!Aug 04, 2008

Swaped this car for my BMW. Its not as fast as the BMW but for a 1.8 20v im very suprised with the performance. Its 125bhp, like new to drive, very solid car & very clean inside & out. Ideal for the mrs to drive, has all the safty fetures that the top spec cars have, really impressed with the car overall, i think i came out with the better deal. Got lots of extras coming to tart the car up, set of 18" alloys, rear smoked lexus lights, R32 side skirts, front headlight eyebrows & a mash debadged grill, gonna get a nice twin exhaust nothing boy-racerish though.Aug 01, 2008

Very comfortable ride yet readable handling (fun to drive), feels well-built and solid, low fuel consumption. The engine is a bit noisier in the cabin, especially in 120+ kmh. Vibrations in the cabin when in idle. Had several problems with reliability of some less important parts which was a bit annoying. Overall, I liked the car.May 31, 2008

This car was good to me for being my second car, although the tranny was a waste of space, the power windows always seemed to screw up, and it almost seemed like it was doomed from the beginning. My mother still owns her.... 6 power window motors, 3 transmission, a blower motor, 4 speakers, a massive brake failure (ruptured brake line), and a lot of work later.... she's still alive..... Although I wish my mom would just get herself a new car and end the misery already. May 21, 2008

Awesome car, great engine. The handling is a little boaty in the corners, so
if you're into ragging your car around town, then a suspension upgrade is
well worth it. otherwise leave it soft and comfortable.

Okay I have a 99 VW Golf mark 4 2.0 NON-TURBO my water pump failed so I swapped it out alomg with the timming belt and tensioner. I swapped the whole assy and for some reason I keep getting the slack in the belt going clock wise from the water pump to the crank and most tension is by the tensioner I also swapped out the crankshaft position sensor now she wont start. Where did I go wrong and how do I properly tension the belt
