I'm looking to replace my transmission in my 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo and was wondering if I could use one from a 98 or if anything has changed between those years

The 1999 Monte Carlo was available as an LS or the more race-car-minded Z34. The base engine on the LS remained a 3.1-liter, 160-horsepower V6, and the Z34 kept its powerful yet fuel-efficient 3.8-liter, 200-horsepower V6. Mileage for the LS is 20/29 city/highway, while owners of the Z34 can expect 19/30.
Drivers love the comfort of the vehicle, yet complain about the quality of the brakes and the time needed to go from 0 to 60, even in the powerful Z34. Tuning these cars for more power can be difficult, as the engine compartment is relatively small and tightly-packed.

Other than the two MAJOR repairs I had to do on this car it has been pretty reliable and very strong. I feel like it doesn't have very much -get-up-and-go to it, however, because of the weight.
As ugly as it is, I LOVED the space. I travel a lot for work and because I just love to drive. I have slept in this car on numerous occasions during long road trips, and the back seat is like sleeping on a couch. The trunk is spacious, the front seat is spacious. I pretty much live in here.
I've said I wouldn't get a new car until I drove this thing into the ground and at 162K it looks like the time is almost here.Aug 28, 2012

i love my car, its my first car. its bright so people can see when i'm coming, my step dad calls it my red apple. its a very reliable car, i haven't had any problems with it. i just want a pontiac vibe i think they're cute cars. Apr 30, 2012

I went to soo many parties in this car an partied soo much in it wit friends it wasnt funny. got great gas mileage i went over 300 mile on just half a tank of gas in it. ended up choppin off the exhust cans an makin it sound more like a car than just a gust of air lol. Sep 30, 2011

Great car, love everything about it. Just the only thing is the location of the battery, which is located under the windshield washer fluid and fuse box.
And it gets 18 MPG. Which is very low for a car...

The 3800 v6 runs solid for great gas milage 27-31 MPG Leather bucket 6way seats Mooroof,custom wheels,good acceleration,just rebuilt trans,no other major work needed,fun factor on a schale 1-10 I would say 7...Feb 05, 2010

Not bad for a first car. Beefy 3800 Series II motor. Good acceleration, not badly made, has had a few things gone wrong, didn't buy it in top shape. A blast to drive! Very comfortable as well. Great Job Chevrolet!Dec 20, 2009

The 3.8 ltr v8 puts out great torque for take off even though the top end isnt that great. The handeling of the car is awsome for a big car. The suspension under mine is a 2000 dollar option though. Oct 28, 2009

Love the power and performance...drives and handles great, lots of room, like the leather, sunroof, the car is fun to drive and looks great too
The down side is the repair bills...power window switch, dual exhaust, front and rear brakes, gas tank..but that goes for any carJul 31, 2009

It is a nice car to get you from A to B. Won't turn any heads by its performance. It has good handling. Has decent acceleration, a nice look, and a nice interior build. Also does alright as far as mpg...so all in all it's a pretty durable car.Jun 11, 2009

Performance-160 hp, so its not amazing, but 0-60 in a little over 8 sec.
Build Quality- Nothing wrong yet!
Appearance-Better after what ive done to it
Cost of ownership- 17-20 mpg city, and only $36 to fill up from a 1/4

First, the exterior, its sleek and sharp, it turns heads, nice paint (Dark jade green metallic). It's got great style I like it better than the newer monte's and i'm not the only one who thinks so. Its got a nice front grille and back tail lights, you can see that chevy is going back to that style with their new cars. Now the interior, Well the dashboard is pretty cheap, cheap plastic (typical GM) it definately looks pieced together. The seats are extremely comfortable however, it feels good driving home from work after a long day, back pain melts away. The LS trim is unique because it can come with so many options, I've seen these monte carlo's with no center console, what is that? where is the sport in that? Mine comes with center console and cloth seats and i've seen others with leather and a moonroof. Performance, i can't complain it has good pick up i'm pretty sure it can go 0 - 60 in about 8 or 9 seconds. when your on the highway you can be doing 85 and not even notice until you look down at the speedometer and then look in your rear view mirror and see your well ahead of everyone. It handles pretty well for a big car 200 inches in length and 73 inches in width, its got nice wide tires and sport suspension so it takes turns pretty well. I do not like the brakes, it would be better with 4 wheel disc brakes instead of 2 discs and 2 drums, so it can take a while to stop, that and although handles and performs well it's still a bit of a heavy car. This car has the 3.1 engine in it, good for about 160, 170 horses, the V6 3.1 OHV is one of GM's best engines and my opinion. The series II V6 3.8 OHV is also one of GM's best engines good for 200 horses you can find that engine in the 1999 Z34 monte. Finally, dependability, starts up everyday even in the coldest of temperatures, mine has 136,000 miles on it, and still drives excellent. Overall I was very happy with this purchase. I have had this car over 5 years and put well over 100,000 miles on it and it keeps running strong. All of the problems that i have had with it were minor and nothing but an easy fix. I would recomend this car to anyone.Jun 11, 2008

car running issues
Chevy Monte Carlo that cranks but won't stay running. I recently changed the fuel pump & fuel filter. I check the pressure pin on the injectors, the fuel pressure regulator, cleaned the MAF but didn't change the sensor, cleaned the the throttle sensor also. Only way it stays running is if I use starter fluid and I'm not using much of it at a time because I don't want to mess anything else up from doing so. Does anyone a clue what could be the reason for my problem????

Engine won't crank 1999 Monte Carlo
1999 Monte Carlo I bought with 103K miles and drove 15K pleasurable miles in 6 months with regular oil changes and fluid checks. Coolant began to leak within in 3 miles of my home, temp was okay and then started to overheat slightly above normal as I arrived home, car puttered once as I pulled into driveway. I let the car rest a couple days, topped off with proper amount of coolant, but engine would not crank (only once did it spin for a second or two. Had battery checked, it's fine. Are the pistons having a tough time? Gasket? Manifold? thanks
