The 1996 Monte Carlo was available in two trims: the LS coupe and the sporty Z34. Each had a GM Hydra-matic four-speed electric automatic transmission with powertrain control.
The LS came standard with a 3.1-liter V6 rated at 160 horsepower, while the Z34 had a 210-horsepower V6. Drivers of this car love the peppy engine, especially on the Z34, as well as the sleek look and such luxuries as leather power seats. Gas mileage does not suffer much for the power: the LS gets 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway, and the Z34 is rated at 17/26.

I have been very satisfied with this car. Because this car was maintained since new it has been an excellent value. It has cost me under $12K to maintain over the last 93K miles (including oil, tires, brakes, etc.). That works out to under 8 cents per mile plus gas! Still rides nice and gets over 25 mpg. Showing its age, so now it's the winter car. The back seat is not easy to get out of, so this is not a family car. This model tends to rot on the rear quarter panels, especially the driver side,.Mar 01, 2015

overall its a really good car wish they had a 5 spd or 6 spd auto in these back then other than that no negatives. it has a decent amount of power when needed and it handles corners pretty good and the front seats are really comfortableNov 21, 2011

overall a pretty good car and not bad for a college student, just wishing it wasn't so old and wasn't getting rust on the body. Works for getting from point A to point B. Don't get too bad of gas milage considering I have a lead foot.Nov 03, 2011

This vehicle does ok on MPG but lacks the horse power. Other than it needs more horse power it's a very good and reliable vehicle. The ride is nice and smooth. At high speed it might need to be a little tighter. It like to start floating at about 110 MPA.Sep 01, 2011

This car has a great ride and handles beautifully. The stock stereo is ample but true
music lovers will opt for all after market components. Ive installed a jvc head unit, a
400 watt jenson 4 channel amp, powering sony 4.5 in the doors and jenson 6x9 in
the rear deck. That proved to be a drastic improvement. Overall its a good car.
The 3.4 dohc v6 produces 215bhp but with minor air duct modifications, 5-10hp
gains are not uncommon. May 14, 2011

I had my Z34 for about 6 years. I wrecked it on Thanksgiving 2009. This is one sick car. Definitely a sleeper, no one suspects it at the red light; but once you lay into the throttle, you are gone. Huge trunk space, plenty of room for subwoofers or bodies, whatever your choice. Costs a lot to maintain though. Spark plug wires aroun $100.00, Spark plugs about $60.00. Dec 13, 2010

First new car I owned after graduating from college. Was a MC fan since I owned a '79 MC and my dad owned/owns several others ('72, '96, '00, '06). Bad part about the car - the gaskets leaked and went out about 65K miles. Sep 14, 2010

Another fantastic automobile that i have had the luxury to own and another high mileage vehicle added to my collection. this one actually happens to be a Luxury Sport. acceleration was alright and turning was satisfactory, but bolt in some strut tower braces and weld on a new dual exhaust and hold on. it will handle with the agility of a bobcat and will sound like a roaring lion.Nov 04, 2009

it's my baby, my first car. Granted it's an older car but it runs very well for its age. It's needed very few repairs and they were cheap. No unwanted noise. I like the overall look of the car, esp. the tint (: gas mileage is what is expected, and it's a nice car to drive overall because you really don't see many of these anymore... especially this well-taken-care-of.Sep 20, 2009

Great Car. I havent had a problem with it since ive had it.
Great on gas, cheap parts, is able to go when floored in
cases. Since it is a older car it needs struts for a comfort ride.
Hope this car lasts for many years. Jul 08, 2009

The performance on the car is excellent, it doesn't really
kick until about 2,000-3,000 rpm, but after that you can
really fell the Z34 kick in! :P For build quality is amazing so
far, (knock on wood of course) i've only had to do general
maintence and replace the battery and cables easy fix,
the apperance is amazing it is very curvy and sleek, the
car just looks good, cost of ownership is really low, i get
about 28 miles to the gallon for a 13 year old car with
127,000 miles on it. lol and since it is a mid 90's engine can
get a little annoying. For fun factor I love driving the car, I
always take the long way home. :) It also has a huge
interior with leather seats and power everything. Jul 04, 2009

this car is a very reliable car, black 3.4DOHC bout 220hp, 230lbs torque. rocker panels rot before the engine goes, very reliable transportation. very easy to customize interior. this is not a persons first car, needs to be taken care of in order to save her. :)Jun 15, 2009

Customized with a Brickyard 400 package. I was the original owner and drove it for over 8 years before it started to nickel and dime me to death. Unfortunately I had to get rid of it. This was one of the best cars I ever owned or drove.Jan 27, 2009

Amazing car, never had a better one.. its fast, sleek, and stylish.. power up the ying-yang.. few upgrades just put in it. no backseat less weight.. acceleration could be a bit faster but the body style makes up for it. it handles like a dream from 0-60. cant beat itDec 02, 2008

love it, fast, clean, nice looking, handles like a dream with performance tires, gas is good unless you stand on it, fits a carseat for families like mine, the ride is a little rough but then again it is a sports model, and performance tires dont make it any smootherNov 27, 2008

Well i bought it second hand It had 180k when i got 2months ago and not it has 195k Its got good acceleration thanks to a 3.4L DOHC v6, it has 4wheel disc brakes and 16" aluminum rims with Sumic tires. Its needed minor repairs like Plugs and plug wires and a starter. Its bright red nice z34 body kit (upgrading eventually) with a fully loaded all leather interior, power everything(windows, locks, power adjustable seats).I get around 25mpg i know its not much but its got a big tank (64L i think) so i cans till go pretty far on a tank. and Yes its very fun to drive with that 215 Hp. I'd recommend it to certain people but not others cuz some cant handle her eh b'y LOLOct 29, 2008

I just sold the car for parts after the transmission went out in August, 2007 which I think was caused by getting hit by a Jeep in May, 2007. It always got anywhere between 24-29 mpg. To this day I wish I'd never wrecked it or else I'd still be driving it today.Jun 23, 2008

average performance, has a rev limiter of 4000, and the interior is quite large. very big car as well, and the 3.4l is a touch noisy for the usage of it. (even though i know it is a Z34) quite slow of the start, but grabs after 2000 rpm, and picks up quicker... not the best rendition of the famed montecarlo, but its a car...May 20, 2008

The 1996 Chevy Monte Carlo Z-34 is a racy, NASCAR-inspired two-door sport coupe. The vehicle has ample power from the 3.4L engine, and the available exterior and interior accessory options make for a very personalized vehicle.
The LS coupe came with a 3.1L V-6 engine, which is known for blowing head gaskets (same engine as the Chevy Cavalier). The Z-34 is an excellent powerhouse which is hard to work on, based on how it is sandwiched into the engine compartment, but which on the whole will not spend too much time being worked on anyway, as it is a driver, not a trailer queen.
The interior on these is large enough that a tall guy can drive the car comfortably (a problem for me with newer cars). This is what drew me to the vehicle.Jul 27, 2007
I have a 96 Monte Carlo LS that runs rough and the check engine light comes on. It does not stall out and doesn’t happen all the time. In the colder weather the car runs great. I just had the entire ignition replaced and coils. It was my dads car and didn’t get used much. Only 34,000 original miles.
