The Volkswagen Golf got a power boost in 1995 thanks to the new GTI VR6 trim package, which featured a 2.8-liter, 172-hp V6 engine linked to a five-speed manual transmission. The GTI VR6 joined the 2- and 4-door GL hatchback versions, which have long been the backbone of the Golf lineup, as well as the new entry-level Golf City and the mid-level Golf Celebration trim packages. They were powered by a 115-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that was a holdover from the previous year.
Standard features for the Golf included power disc brakes, power door locks, power steering, a rear window defroster and rear window wiper, dual airbags, child safety locks, rear shoulder seatbelts, an anti-theft alarm system, and an AM/FM/cassette audio system.
The Golf's handling, roominess, and power were cited as positive points by drivers, but some also noted that their cars needed frequent repairs, which could be expensive. A number of drivers also decried the lack of a glovebox.

I love my 1995 VW golf (named Scarlett). It's over 210,000 miles right now and still runs well. It is small, fast, and fun to drive, economical, cheap and easy to fix, reliable, easy to park, has a fantastic turning radius (U-Turn on a narrow city streets for a parking place? No problem!), can carry more than many suvs (I've packed it with 25 18" CMUs at Home Depot), comes in red, low maintenance cost, running great at over 210,000 miles, can drive several 12-hour days at 70-miles per hour with no problems. If it wasn't getting dowdy looking and smelly inside I'd keep driving it forever.Feb 14, 2014

Actually gets a little better fuel economy when you don't try to squeeze extra miles
out by running at lower rpm's... I guess I was just lugging it. Regardless I haven't
broken 26 mpg yet, so not great for a 2-door hatchback. Great fun to drive and
even at a brisk interstate speed it always has power to accelerate. Decent cargo
space for a small car. Good rear seats but I wish it had better hookups for a child's
seat. Technically it seats five, but I have done it and that was a cramped ride! Jul 08, 2012

Super fun to drive! Great on gas!!! The interior could use some work.
Great in the winter. Easy to maintain and repair. Little squeaks and

only had it 9 days so far , but in those few days its been great , the handling is abit
wobbly but then again its not the sport version and the power makes it a nippy lil
car , more to follow soon , minor problem with the idle control valve which has been
sorted out , starter motor went which was changed now running smooth , been
given a full service and had new exhaust . plus its been fitted with a set of black 17

Performance: Good Cruiser, brakes good, handles nice and tight for a soft top.
Build Quality: Good.
Appearance: Nice, looks great with the top down.
Cost of Ownership: Cheap to insure and fuel.

Not a bad car on a budget, fairly quick and pretty reliable, not great on petrol costs quite a bit, boring interor, uncomfortable at times, overall look of the car isnt great but that can be improved i suppose, other than that fairly fun to drive Oct 12, 2009

My golf is a 1300 Carburettor, with a 4-speed gearbox. It pulls well off the line and builds up good speed in second.
It's apple green and has body modifications, with 15" mag wheels. Engine is stock except for a e-ram supercharger for drag races.Jun 12, 2009

Awesome car, comfortable, fast, beautiful, stable and a real nice drive experience. Here at Brasil it insurance is very very expensive, making it "undoable" but the car is a very very good cost/benefit rate. The best car I have ever owned (not owned so much, but it worth every cents.)Jun 02, 2009

Bonne tenue de route (utile en hiver), bonne accélération, imaginé en allemagne, mais malheureusement fabriquée au Mexique Une transmission manuelle particulière qui est pas fait pour n'importe qui, les moins bon conducteur doivent se tourner vers l'automatique. its slow, its not very sleek, and its got a ugly interior, but its got more character than most cars and goes around corners like a go-kart due to some slight modifications, it squeaks and rattles a bit but need a new interior to fix that and soon getting a 2.0 liter 16 valve motorAug 22, 2008

The performance of the gti is great power to weight ratio means that most cars of its class havn't got a chance. It is built very well and still goes strong at 200 000 miles.
Good body work although suffers from unique rust patches on the lower part of all doors.
Can be a bit pricey on the fuel consumption especially with todays prices of petrol in the uk. On a whole the golf mkiii is a great car to drive and own, full of fun and comfortabilty and holds its value too.Jul 30, 2008

CL 1.4i Rolling Stones Edition. Fully loaded with factory options and retrofitted with what else there was to find. Perhaps the only Golf 1.4 with cruise control. Drove this Golf across the european continent a few times.Jan 10, 2008

The car I am referring to is a Volkswagen Golf 3 VR6, and even though you may think that this car only puts out 96Kw; Once you start to tamper with it a bit, you can come close to doubling that figure. The one I am referring to, pushes out about 150Kw on the wheels, and that is still normally aspirated, but with some cam worx, intake changes and then most elaborately the EMS replaced.
I have had to pay approximately R8000.00 worth of fines with this beast, and still, I love nailing it on the straights.
Overall a very good vehicle, with the suspension developed in conjunction with Porsche, and an exceptional gearbox system that delivers good clean acceleration through the long gear ratio's.Dec 31, 2007

This car is so quite i wonder if it is on sometimes. tons of room in the cab for a hatchback. i live in the rockies and the car hugs corners and has superb pick up on the highway. Such a fun car to drive. 131,000 kms and only minor repairs. highly reccomendNov 16, 2007

It would be better if things didnt keep going wrong. eg. Internal radiator leaking, exhaust falling off, tyres keep on losing pressure, fuel gauge not working properly. Appart from them things its a brilliant car.Nov 07, 2007
