The Volkswagen Golf got a power boost in 1995 thanks to the new GTI VR6 trim package, which featured a 2.8-liter, 172-hp V6 engine linked to a five-speed manual transmission. The GTI VR6 joined the 2- and 4-door GL hatchback versions, which have long been the backbone of the Golf lineup, as well as the new entry-level Golf City and the mid-level Golf Celebration trim packages. They were powered by a 115-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that was a holdover from the previous year.
Standard features for the Golf included power disc brakes, power door locks, power steering, a rear window defroster and rear window wiper, dual airbags, child safety locks, rear shoulder seatbelts, an anti-theft alarm system, and an AM/FM/cassette audio system.
The Golf's handling, roominess, and power were cited as positive points by drivers, but some also noted that their cars needed frequent repairs, which could be expensive. A number of drivers also decried the lack of a glovebox.

I love my 1995 VW golf (named Scarlett). It's over 210,000 miles right now and still runs well. It is small, fast, and fun to drive, economical, cheap and easy to fix, reliable, easy to park, has a fantastic turning radius (U-Turn on a narrow city streets for a parking place? No problem!), can carry more than many suvs (I've packed it with 25 18" CMUs at Home Depot), comes in red, low maintenance cost, running great at over 210,000 miles, can drive several 12-hour days at 70-miles per hour with no problems. If it wasn't getting dowdy looking and smelly inside I'd keep driving it forever.Feb 14, 2014

Actually gets a little better fuel economy when you don't try to squeeze extra miles
out by running at lower rpm's... I guess I was just lugging it. Regardless I haven't
broken 26 mpg yet, so not great for a 2-door hatchback. Great fun to drive and
even at a brisk interstate speed it always has power to accelerate. Decent cargo
space for a small car. Good rear seats but I wish it had better hookups for a child's

Super fun to drive! Great on gas!!! The interior could use some work.
Great in the winter. Easy to maintain and repair. Little squeaks and

only had it 9 days so far , but in those few days its been great , the handling is abit
wobbly but then again its not the sport version and the power makes it a nippy lil
car , more to follow soon , minor problem with the idle control valve which has been
sorted out , starter motor went which was changed now running smooth , been
given a full service and had new exhaust . plus its been fitted with a set of black 17

All stock. 138,000 Miles. Thinking about doing intake and exhaust, otherwise a turbo. Could get a tdi turbo off another or just buy a turbo kit. Nice and light so handles well and accelerates ok for a 2.0 single over head cam. The five speed also helps. Dont like the red though. Thinking dark gray, black, or green. My golf is a 1300 Carburettor, with a 4-speed gearbox. It pulls well off the line and builds up good speed in second.

The performance of the gti is great power to weight ratio means that most cars of its class havn't got a chance. It is built very well and still goes strong at 200 000 miles.
Good body work although suffers from unique rust patches on the lower part of all doors.
Can be a bit pricey on the fuel consumption especially with todays prices of petrol in the uk. On a whole the golf mkiii is a great car to drive and own, full of fun and comfortabilty and holds its value too.Jul 30, 2008

The car I am referring to is a Volkswagen Golf 3 VR6, and even though you may think that this car only puts out 96Kw; Once you start to tamper with it a bit, you can come close to doubling that figure. The one I am referring to, pushes out about 150Kw on the wheels, and that is still normally aspirated, but with some cam worx, intake changes and then most elaborately the EMS replaced.
I have had to pay approximately R8000.00 worth of fines with this beast, and still, I love nailing it on the straights.
Overall a very good vehicle, with the suspension developed in conjunction with Porsche, and an exceptional gearbox system that delivers good clean acceleration through the long gear ratio's.Dec 31, 2007

Problem with a cabin fan in a golf 3 1995
At first some details of my car: golf 3, manufactured in 1995, diesel engine, manual transmition, approx. 65 horsepower. My problem is that somethimes a cabin fan works and somethimes don't, (mostly the fan doesn't work). If I close the driver's door with a force in the most cases, fan starts to work. But if I turn off the engine fan dies and when I start the engine again the fan stays dead. Friends told me that the problem is probably in the wires or in the motor of the fan or maybe in the controller of the fan, does anybody have the same problem as i have? And one more thing that i have noticed, if the fan is turned on for a longer period of time (30 min) on the high rpm (level 4), there is a smell of a burning plastic or burning electronic. Also the fan starts to increase and decrease rpms by itself. Thanks for your answers!

I got a 1995 mk3 golf that I'm restoring the heater works but it's not at full capacity I was trying to flush the cooling system and flush the heater core at the same time and change the t-stat and maybe fix the problem...
