1994 Dodge Intrepid Preview summaryImage

Roomy is the word of the day for the 1994 Dodge Intrepid, a four-door sedan that can fit six adult passengers, thanks to its cab-forward design. With a sloping windshield extended further over the front of the car and wheels moved closer to corners, the interior cabin is elongated to provide ample legroom in the back seat even when the front seats are moved back. Big doors make entry and exit easy and bump-free. More room also means more visibility.

The design also gives the Intrepid a sporty, stylish look both inside and out, with wraparound taillights and a cockpit-style dashboard that's easy to read and use. In 1994, Dodge made few changes to the Intrepid. The standard 3.3-liter V6 engine in both base and ES models got a horsepower boost to 161, to help combat sluggishness on hills. The 3.5-liter, 214-hp V6 is fast and furious. Variable assist power steering was added (to ES models) to help in parallel parking. A touring suspension, previously only offered on the ES, became standard on both models.

While the huge interior would please even Larry Bird, and the great pickup, speedy acceleration and easy handling of the 1994 Intrepid make this car fun to drive, there are a lot of complaints about things going wrong. Air conditioning failure, coolant leaks, transmission breakage, and tie rod problems are just a few of the long list of repairs drivers mention.

The Intrepid debuted with a lot of hype, representing "The New Dodge." In reality, it is just plain average. Average acceleration, braking, and handling. Build quality showed typical deterioration, and the front end wasn't as strong in the demo derby as I had hoped it would be. Some people thought this car looked cool and futuristic, I just thought it looked edgy and weird (generation 2 intrepids look much better IMO). Gas mileage was similar to other cars in it's class. If you have one of these with high mileage, expect a few large expenses (like suspension components, bearings, brakes, possibly a transmission) but aside from that it was pretty reliable, didn't have sludge issue like gen 2 intrepids. Not particularly fun to drive, but had cool dash and gages and good visibility, so it was sort of neat to drive.Feb 20, 2013

Performance- was wonderful, the 3.3 liter base engine was perfect for 31 mpg highway and had plenty of power to merge on the interstate with a/c on! Loved the sound it made as well! Build Quality- was excellent, the dash fit together nicely and for the year it had a beautiful readout! Appearance- loved it!! It was sporty and mean looking for a four door sedan, never should have stopped making them! Cost of ownership- perfect, aside from general mainenence never had to replace anything until after 120,000 miles!!! Excellent car! then it was simply the alternator and other general maintanence for the mileage Fun Factor- Excellent, always thought I was in "my own car" it had its own personality, like there wasn't one like it! :)Aug 05, 2010

Liked the car a lot, powerful and comfortable. Always took me where i had to go. Comfortable seating for 5 in the car. Safety was taken care of and good on high speeds. Slightly high on gas consumption. A good buyDec 04, 2009
