1992 Volkswagen Jetta Preview summaryImage

Volkswagen got an early jump on the trend toward more environmentally friendly cars with the introduction in 1992 of the Volkswagen Jetta ECOdiesel, which was equipped with a turbocharged 59-horsepower, 1.6-liter diesel engine that delivered high mileage while giving off fewer pollutants.

It joined a lineup that included a 100-horsepower four-cylinder gas engine and a more powerful 134-horsepower gas engine, which were dropped into the Jetta GL/Carat and GLI trim packages, respectively. All versions came with a standard five-speed manual transmission. A three-speed automatic was optional for the Carat and the GL.

Standard features for the ECOdiesel, Carat and GL included bucket seats, power brakes, power steering, a tilt steering wheel, and a rear window defroster. The GLI added power door locks, Recaro seats, and alloy wheels, among other features.

Generally, drivers responded in a positive way to the Jetta, noting that it was a durable and reliable car that was easy to maintain and fun to drive. But many also pointed out that the Jetta could be a quirky car that was prone to expensive mechanical repairs.

Performance wise it is very slow because it has 52 HP. I think the torque is in the 70-80 ft/lbs range. Braking is ok, not the greatest but for how light the car is, it stops great. The build quality is great. The engine will probably run forever. The cost to run the car is very cheep compared to a van or truck. i take frequent long trips and does well. the top quarter of the tank is the largest and i can go those 270km on the top quarter of the tank. the tank holds 55L of diesel fuel. There is not alot to this car, it is almost like you have an old tractor engine in your car its so simple. There is no computer, no fooling around with diagnostics, just plane jane and that's how i like it. This car is fun because it is lite, it has a manual transmission and because it is a diesel with good torque. If you don't like somebody riding your ass, you can drop down a gear, pin it and watch them get smoked out!! ha ha suckers.Oct 26, 2010
