When i got the car, I had to replace the radiator but was fine when fixed. It had a noisy petrol pump which was eventually fixed. This car was very easy to drive as it was automatic, although a manual might have been more fun.Jan 14, 2013

Literally the best car anyone could ever own. Mine is almost up to 350,000 miles, still running like a beast. Engine and transmission were built to last forever. I'm currently 19, and never plan on driving anything else. I will die before this tank. And when that happens, it's going in the Volvo museum in Sweden. I know what you're thinking, I'm using extreme hyperbole. But honestly, hyperbole doesn't exist when it comes to my baby. Think of the best thing you can possibly comprehend- it will never begin to compare to this golden marvel of god-like engineering. Nov 03, 2012

I love my car. It is very safe, it has supreme handling and fuel economy is remarkable for the age of the vehicle. I would recommend my car to anyone looking for a very safe family car. It's the best!Feb 09, 2012

I wish it had more power. But, at 300,000 miles, it has been a good car, and I can't complain. It is easy to work on, and doesn't cost an arm and a a leg to replace the parts that do break. It is fun to drive, because of being rear wheel drive.Jul 31, 2010

The best looking 740 ever released in my opinion, I always got complimented on how shiny it was. The b230f motor was tough, would've been nice with a turbo because it was a small engine for a (almost) 2 tonne car. It developed an annoying shake/vibration prior to selling it, it was very irritating.Jul 25, 2010

This car is my first car and was given to me by my
Dad who bought it new in 1989. I love the car and I
glad to be the only kid at my school who has one.
It has almost 240,000 miles on it and is still going!
Performance wise however, this car is just not very
fast. It admits only 114 hp and has slow
acceleration. The torque ranges at around 136 lb/ft
at 3600 rpm and is the only performance spec I am
semi-content with. If you want a faster 740, go
with the 740 turbo.
This car is built like a tank, no question. It has only
needed few repairs for normal things like new
brakes. 240000 miles shows this car just won't die.
I don't care what others think, I love the styling of
this car. Sure, its a brick, but its boxy styling is so
simple yet original.
This car has alright gas mileage with 21 street, 27
highway. It doesn't really require much
maintenance at all, just oil changes.
Is the car fun? Well to drive fast, not really. To

Squeeks and Rattles Sometimes. Cant get the stereo Wired in Properly. but it has one hell of a boost when you whack down the accelerator.
Bargain for 200 quid on a twenty year old car thats still looks relatively good on the outside!!Oct 16, 2009

1989 740 DL wagon - bought used with 189,000 miles. Had been fairly well maintained by previous 2 owners. Drove 600 miles home in a blizzard, no problems.
It's aa heavy vehicle (they don't talk about "Swedish steel" fo nothing) but feels very safe and solid. Tracks well, has acceptable acceleration for a 4-cylinder witj a ton and a half of body. Four-wheel disk brakes are great, especially in a 20-year-old car.
The car is easy to work on, and parts are still available. Have had to replace headliner, and repair overdrive in the auto transmission.
The "brick" appearance still looks a little dated, but is approaching classic status now. Am averaging about 20 MPG in combined suburban driving.Aug 23, 2009

We installed sway bars to our Turbo wagon and it corners like a sports car! We live in Minnesota and no signs of rust yet. I totally enjoy the comfort of driving thi car even if it's as old as it is. I want another one!!!May 19, 2009

Manual Transmission, with a button 5th gear. 4 banger engine that runs like a V8. Gets about 30 mpg. Exterior looks great, interior needs some work. Fun to drive. No discernible squeaks to be heard. No rattles. Only problem I've had is the heater broke, which takes about 5 mins. to fix. Dec 06, 2008

Det svarta fåret på våran gård. Svart som natten, underbar att köra när han går riktigt. Men det är ju det att 40.000 mil börjar ge sig till känna på många vis. well its really old, but no rust. manual moonroof, heated leather seats, automaitc windows. rear-wheel drive. my tires suck atm. the roof doesnt have fabric on the interior so it looks really creepy. also, the padding can come off real easy and it gets in your eyes. its a bit of a gas hog so I try not to drive that often. overall for $1700 its great though.Nov 25, 2007
