1981 Honda Civic Preview summaryImage

This is the first full model design change in seven years. The CVCC engine is now the CVCC-II, designed to improve combustion efficiency. The year 1981 also rolled out the Honda Civic Country Station Wagon, as well as a 4-door sedan trim, with front wheel, overhead drive and notchback styling.

The '81 Civic received the U.S. Import Car of the Year 1980 award from Motor Trend Magazine and took first place in the crossing mileage test in the import car section of the United States Auto Club.

Even after 25 years, the 1981 Honda Civic can pass emissions tests according to most of its drivers. In fact, of those who sold it, they say it was the biggest mistake they ever made since the car was still perfectly drivable, still perfectly reliable, and still, even though running rich, had decent gas milage.

Best car I have ever owned it never breaks down. Only seating for 4 and we are 5. Was silver grey and well that's a bad thing without lead silver grey is like water color and will wash off or fade off very fast in the sun Jan 07, 2012

I bought a stripped 1500 DX new in '81. The car was just the thing for college and a major step up from my old and failing Barracuda. While not the most exciting drive, the Civic delivered unsurpassed economy and reliability. Around town with the stick I got 34 mpg religiously and 39 on trips. Repairs over my 80,000 mile ownership included replacing the water pump and repairing a sticking parking brake, and THAT'S IT! When I sold it, rust was taking over the hatchback and the wheel openings but the general operation was still strong. If only Honda could build it again today.Aug 09, 2010

This little race machine is over 30 years old and is NOW starting to need replacement parts! I have a small vaccuume problem and that is it! Oh, and the 29 year old clutch needed to be replaced last year. Why dont they make them like this anymore?May 02, 2010
