1979 Toyota Supra Preview summaryImage

The Toyota Supra was introduced in 1979 as part of the sporty Celica line. The Supra was based on the Celica liftback, but it was 5 inches longer, had a more powerful engine and came with more luxury options. It was also the first Toyota to get electronic fuel injection. The first generation of Supra was known as the Mark I, or MK1.

The 1979 Toyota Supra came in only one style. The engine was a 2.6-liter, 110-horsepower inline 6-cylinder. It was available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Drivers, particularly those who liked the Celica, were glad to see a Toyota that promised reliability and sportiness in one package. However, the extra weight of the engine offset most of the power advantage the 1979 Supra had over the Celica.

Well, this one I bought for $1000. Interior pretty rough, exterior decent. Needed a fuel pump and then ran awesome. But for some reason, just like my last one, about a month after it arrived in WY, it blew the head gasket, Still workin on it though!Oct 13, 2009

I didn't have this car very long because it was in an accident and the radiator wasn't replaced properly. It died not too long later and I literally had to walk down the road from the car garage where it had been looked at, to buy my next car!Jun 13, 2008
