1976 Toyota Corolla Preview summaryImage

Most of the existing Corollas remained the same for 1976, with the exception of the sports coupe, which was redesigned to look sportier and to set it apart from the rest of the Corolla lineup. Sharing its front-end styling was a new three-door liftback.

The 1976 Toyota Corolla came in many body styles with several trim levels. The two- and four-door sedan came as a standard, DX or E5. The hardtop coupe and sports coupe came as a standard or a SR5. The wagon came as a standard or DX. The liftback came as a standard and SR5. All came with a 1.6-liter engine, except for the two-door sedan, which came with a 1.2-liter engine.

With the introduction of the liftback and the restyling of the coupe, Toyota gave consumers some sporty options that were much more affordable than the Celica, Toyota's other sports model.

My first car - a blue slantback 2-door E/5 with a white vinyl roof panel. Had a terrific, smooth 5-speed transmission, comfortable bucket seats, handled beautifully, very peppy with the 1.6L engine and got 35+ mph on the highway. It would go up to 70 easily, and up to 85, wih a bit of straining (not bad for a little 4-cylinder). One of the sexiest cars I've ever seen, solidly built, easy upkeep and a joy to drive. Unfortunately, it wasn't built for the east coast, and by 1985 it was rusting out under the driver's door, into the frame and everything. Sold it to a kid for a couple hundred, but I still miss it.Jul 23, 2010

The car was originally an automatic vehicle with a 1600cc engine. When I received the car it was a bare shell which was a good thing as I can build it to suit my needs. What I liked is the rear suspension that came with the car was the bigger pumkin which made the handling much better once the modified 2000cc engine went in. The one thing I did not like was the amount of body work required to bring back up to my standards. The car was just alot of power and fun to drive, I would recommend it to anyone especially now that drifting is a sport, the ideal car for the sport. Jul 01, 2008
