1974 Pontiac Grand Am Preview summaryImage

The only significant change to Pontiac's new mid-sized 1974 Grand Am is a redesigned grille. Instead of 6 individual grilles, the wide-body sedan and coupe managed to fit 12 grilles on the front end. Vertical taillights replaced last year's horizontal ones. Literally a combination of the Grand Prix and the Trans Am in terms of luxury plus performance, the 1974 Pontiac Grand Am saw a decrease in production numbers by more than half, perhaps due to the emerging gas crisis. Of those, the majority were coupes. Engine options remained the same. A 400 block V8 engine with a 2-barrel carb put out 170-hp and its 4-barrel version put out 200-hp. Both were mated to a 4-speed Turbo Hydramatic auto tran. A 455 block V8 engine got 250-hp. There were still a few 4-barrel 400s with a manual transmission, but after 1974 they would be discontinued.
Rigged up with a stiff chassis, lower suspension, performance tires, and oversized anti-sway bars in the front and back, the 1974 Grand Am was being marketed as a sports tourer, with emphasis on a powerful engine and thrilling handling. But the inside was also designed for room and comfort, with supportive low-slung seats. It was popular because it was affordable and still came with a lot of standard features for the time. Drivers also liked its unique look and the V8 engine power.

This is the one that got away. I had a 74 black with the red interior, the A/C was awesome. Remember the “chicken grip” on the passenger side? . it was a 400 2 barreI . I did some mild mods by adding an edelbrock hi rise with a holley 4 barrel. I had to add a cam after that. What made the car a unicorn was it also had the Hurst t-tops. My friends called it the batmobile. I let it go to one of my best friends and watched it decline. Of the many cars I have owned this is the one I miss the most. Aug 08, 2024

I owned this car as a Freshman in college. I went to school downstate Illinois. The drive from Chicago to Bloomington was 2hrs. on I-55. This Pontiac was built for the 150 mile ride to & from school on weekends. Doing 80 mph plus was the norm. The posi-traction was great for winter snow. I also did a carpool with 5-6 people in this car on a daily basis driving from Chicago to North chicago. 100 miles roundtrip.Nobody had radar guns then or detectors so the state patrol would tag you the old fashioned way. Hide behind billboards or in the cornfields. I was never tagged by the state patrol but I have seen the results of some really bad wrecks by speeders. I had a front-end wreck at an intersection where the oncoming car ran the light while I was in the turning lane. The amazing thing! I basically totaled the Dodge Dart with the right-front corner of my retractable bumper. The only damage the Grand AM had was the bumper stuck in position because of the angle of impact. The body shop I took it to was very impressed and fixed the bumper and gave me a grand paint job with acrylic paint. That was the beginning of the end! That new acrylic paint job set my car off the charts from other cars in its category. I had so many complements and developed so many rivals - it was crazy! Unfortunately, this car was jacked on a winters night on the East-side of Chicago as I slept . I think it was driven to Indiana, then stripped for parts after that ordeal.I really missed this car. Never had another one to compare to it.Jan 22, 2013
