BMW's American-built SUV came in three models in the 2006 model year: the 3.0i with a 225 horsepower, 6-cylinder engine, the 4.4i with a 315 horsepower V8, and the 4.8is with a 355 horsepower V8. X5s have all-wheel drive without low-range gearing, and front side airbags and front and rear head-protecting tubular side airbags come standard.
Compared with previous versions of the X5, the 2006 models took critical hits, with professional test drivers complaining the car wasn't all that practical. "BMW knows that most luxury SUV buyers spend about as much time off-roading as they do in the 99-cent store," wrote one, adding that while the vehicle drives nicely and can carry five passengers comfortably, "it wouldn't be a good choice for home improvement projects or any other activity that requires serious cargo capacity."

great Engine Superb ride and handling no body roll drives like no other car; only issue are the costly labor repairs and oil leaks but once repaired can last you 300+ miles I still have mine . have owned it 18 years (2003)Oct 12, 2020

That it did not get the fuel mileage of a sedan is not on the plus side. Other than that, the only competition it has wears a three pointed star. It is tough, safe, sporty, fast and predictable. But I would not get it serviced at the dealer. Rather at a BMW specialist.May 05, 2015

Parking sensors are a big plus as is the privacy glass and roller sun shades. The huge glass moonroof is a really nice feature and it takes up less space in my garage than my E500 Mercedes. The tow package is great.May 04, 2015

This car is a great reliable family car. For an SUV it is fun to drive and extremely responsive! Interior is extremely sharp and the seats are comfortable. Great for long drives and commutes. Safety features are top of the line!May 06, 2014

The fact that it only uses premium gas and it is very sensitive even with premium gas. Best to trade these vehicles in before the warranty runs out unless you have the money to make repairs. A very comfortable vehicle for long trips and I cant hear any road noise even at higher speeds.Mar 01, 2014

The pros of this care pretty much sums up the most I liked about the vehicle, it was reliable and sure was fun to look at. The breaks and handling were superb. I felt safe in the vehicle because being an X5 model it is spacious and comfortably sits 5 people. The car was fun to drive because of the sun roof/moon roof, this part of the car stretches back into the back seat so all passengers can enjoy it. Feb 21, 2014

This car has great power and handling. Good safety feel. Love the heated seats and the full moonroof is great. I like that it is already prepped for long trips with the roof bars and a full size matching BMW roof box along with the towing package. Only things that aren't so great is the maintenance and repair costs and BMWs only use premium fuel. This car lives up to the BMW quality and sportiness.Sep 15, 2013

See above, love the huge sunroof, GPS, power everything, drives amazing in the snow! Decent trunk worked well for a family and our belongings. Has heated seats and steering wheel which are nice in the winter. I love it and definitely recommend it. Jun 26, 2013

This 2006 X5 4.4i is an amazing sports activity vehicle. Smooth,
comfortable, a joy to drive. Phenomenal acceleration for its size and
weight, and I have averaged in mixed driving 20.1 mpg. I hate to sell it,
because this car is fabulous in all respects.Jan 29, 2011

Rainstorms? Tight turns? Rough terrain? The X5 Sports Activity Vehicle is ready for any journey. And with seating for seven, it's as versatile inside as it is outside. Beautiful inside and out. A luxury crossover with an all wheel drive. Great handling in snow...

Excellent braking and handling, throttle response and acceleration
adequate, needed fuel pump mods to get acceleration comparable to
larger engine. No repairs needed but electronics are temperamental and
parts expensive. Interior and exterior are beautiful. Cost of ownership is
relatively expensive, but it is fun.Nov 14, 2010

Pros: The heated steering wheel is amazing in the winter even when you have gloves on. The panoramic sunroof is a great addition as well. It brings in so much more light into the vehicle, and the rear passengers can enjoy the sunroof too. I like how the Hockey Edition package included the Executive Package as well. The xenon headlights swivel and come to level when you first start-up the vehicle. The 3.0 L I6 engine is very powerful for being the smallest one offered for the X5 range (I've often found myself braking to slow down because I didn't realize how fast I was going). BMW's 4 year/80,000 km worry-free maintenance is heaven-sent. Everytime the BMW had to get something checked up or fixed, it was free. Since this BMW is based on the 5-series sedan platform, it drives like a much more refined sedan than SUV. There is minimal body-lean in cornering which is great for an SUV.
Cons: The interior dashboard and console come straight from the previous 5-series generation. The current generation 5-series includes iDrive with a revamped interior, so I wonder why that interior didn't carry over until the 2nd generation X5 (2007 - present). That interior looks outdated, in fact. The "premium" sound system didn't sound so premium, but it was pretty good.
Overall, this SUV is segment-leading. I only wish the plans for the X7 went through, because this SUV is only a mid-size. I would really much prefer a full-size SUV, but you do really get a lot of "sport-car" in this one.Apr 29, 2010

Drove beautifully, but still didn't have much off the line punch.Had to get it rapped up to about 4000 rpm before real propulsion takes place. Maybe I am spoiled by american cars.May 06, 2008

When BMW released the X5, it set the standards for European built SUVs. And it still does.
The 3.0 diesel engine is fantastic. It has an amazing torque, making it very fast shifting
between gears.
The auto gear is a fantastic piece of work. Unique in its kind, making manual gearing
obsolete to be honest.
The car is very big and thus very heavy, yet this never turns out to be a burden. That is,
keeping the car outside city area, of course.Mar 26, 2008
I have a BMW X5 3.0 Litre Diesel Sport, which is not starting. The car opens as normal with the fob and the lights on the dash come on as normal but then when I turn the key to start the car it clicks once and all power is lost, with the only way of re-starting the car being to jump start it. Any help on possible solutions to repair the problem would be greatly appreciated.
I could use some help. I have a bmw x5 2006 with 113,000 miles. It was losing a lot of oil and the mechanic said it was a leak. He fixed the leak. The next week white smoke came out of the exhaust twice. Also now after 3 months after the repaired leak the car is out of oil. The mechanic said it's burning oil. He recommend placing a higher grade of oil. I am not sure this will be fix. Any other suggestions? Also I only saw the white smoke twice. Thanks in advance
ABS, Brake, 4x4 traction, and Trans failsafe prog, Engine failsafe prog, Service Engine Soon coming on in the car just all of a sudden. The car will not start on its on nor hold a charge. We tried jump starting it and it will start for awhile but after unplugging the cables it dies. What could be wrong?
I have a 2006 BMW X5 3.0 and the 4x4 light is on for no apparent reason. I took it to the shop and the mechanic has no explanation. He checked out the car extensively including hooking it up to a computer with no luck. Anyone ever experience this before?
