Everything needs to be “grand” these days, even if the previous iteration was already good (if not great). That’s why Toyota’s all-new Grand Highlander builds on the successful formula of the midsize, family-friendly Highlander SUV with more power, space, and amenities, to take on super-sized rivals like the Jeep Grand Cherokee L.

What’s New for the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander

The Grand Highlander is a new addition to the Toyota lineup for the 2024 model year. This Toyota offers up adult-friendly space in the third row, a lineup of three powertrain choices, and new-to-the-brand features such as a digital key. Toyota notes that the Highlander was the first vehicle in the midsize crossover segment to offer a hybrid powertrain—back in 2006, nearly 20 years ago—and the brand’s potent new Hybrid MAX offering means that Grand Highlander buyers won’t need to choose between power and efficiency.

Design

The Grand Highlander grows to gargantuan proportions, necessary to wrap around a lot of passenger and cargo space, but it wears its weight as elegantly as possible. It’s not simply an engorged Highlander: While the family connection is obvious, the Grand stands on its own by way of a trapezoidal grille (while we’re reluctant to parrot Toyota’s use of “hammerhead,” the descriptor works well), and available 20-inch wheels visually provide a steady base. The side panels are simple, leading to body-color rear pillars that give the Grand Highlander a more timeless look than the trendy black rear pillars found on so many rival SUVs, though black rockers add ruggedness. Hybrid MAX models are offered with exclusive front and rear bumper designs and a dual exhaust.

Powertrain

Full specs aren’t available as of this writing, but here’s what we know about the Grand Highlander’s powertrain lineup so far. Base models will come equipped with a 2.4-liter gas engine available with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Next up is a 2.5-liter hybrid engine, also available with FWD or AWD, which Toyota expects to achieve up to 34 mpg combined. Toyota’s new Hybrid MAX powers the top Grand Highlander versions with 362 horsepower, 400 pound-feet of torque, and standard AWD. Selectable Sport, Eco, and Normal drive modes come standard across the lineup.

When equipped with the gas engine and AWD, or the Hybrid MAX powertrain, the Grand Highlander can be upgraded with the Multi-Terrain Select system with Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, and Snow terrain modes. Furthermore, Hybrid MAX models will be capable of making a 6.3-second sprint to 60 mph and will have a 5,000-pound towing capacity.

Interior

The cabin features an abundance of soft-touch materials highlighting elegant design. Driver and front passenger have easy access to instrumentation and controls, plenty of storage, and, as an especially thoughtful touch, independent armrests. Fabric surfaces get quality decorative stitchwork, while wood-effect trim is available to accent the cockpit. Synthetic leather upholstery comes standard, along with power-adjustable heated front seats and the choice of second-row captain’s chairs or three-seat bench. Options include heated and cooled front- and second-row seats, front-row seat memory function, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic moonroof, ambient lighting, puddle lamps, and a hands-free power liftgate. Leather upholstery is available, and Hybrid MAX models are offered with leather and Ultrasuede seating surfaces with exclusive bronze accents.

The Grand Highlander serves up adult-friendly seating across all three rows, as well as space for seven carry-on suitcases in the cargo area. With the middle and rear seats folded down, there’s about 98 cubic feet of total cargo capacity. Storage spaces, cupholders, and USB ports abound—even third-row passengers get their own chargers in the outboard seats.

Technology

A 12.3-inch multimedia display comes standard with touch and voice controls, though there are also physical controls for key functions. The center console provides wireless charging and can accommodate a tablet. The system comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and offers dual Bluetooth connectivity and available Wi-Fi for up to five devices. Options include an 11-speaker JBL Audio system, a subscription to enable remote key features through Toyota’s smartphone app, and a panoramic view monitor.

Safety

Toyota equips every Grand Highlander with the comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 tech suite. Its features include pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-trace assist, road-sign assist, automatic high beams, and proactive driving assist. The latest version of the pre-collision system adds new sensors and can now detect motorcyclists, while the proactive driving assist system is a new addition to the lineup and assists the driver with gentle braking and steering in certain situations, though it is distinct from the pre-collision system. Toyota also includes blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert.

Options include parking sensors with automatic braking, a digital rearview mirror, traffic-jam assist, and front cross-traffic alert.

The 2024 Grand Highlander hasn’t yet been crash-tested.

Pricing

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander will be available in three trim levels: base XLE, mid-tier Limited, and top-tier Platinum. It will be produced at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in Princeton, Indiana. As of this writing, pricing and availability for the all-new Toyota Grand Highlander is expected to be announced in the summer of 2023.
