The Tesla Model Y in some ways leads the charge compared to other electric vehicle (EV) crossovers, while in other ways, it's a total outlier. ## What’s New for the 2024 Tesla Model Y
The Tesla Model Y is due for an update, at least according to typical vehicle lifecycles, but Tesla generally doesn’t abide by traditional automotive planning and tends to roll out changes and upgrades as they become available. In 2023, the Model Y got a new base trim, and for 2024, the Model Y may gradually see some of the changes that are being rolled out to the mechanically similar [__Model 3__](https://www.cargurus.com/research/2024-Tesla-Model-3-c33224 "2024 Tesla Model 3").
## Design
The Model Y is the smaller and less expensive of Tesla’s two crossover EVs, though its styling melds well with the rest of the brand’s lineup, with a closed, sculpted nose, sleek sides and tail, and big, tall windows for a bright and airy look. The Model Y’s styling will likely carry over mostly unchanged for 2024.
## Powertrain
The Model Y’s powertrains are also likely to carry over unchanged for 2024, though it wouldn’t be unheard-of for Tesla to mix things up at any point in the year. The base model offers 279 miles of range, the Long Range offers 330 miles, and the Performance gets 303 miles. The Performance model can go from zero-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. With two electric motors, the Model Y boasts all-wheel drive (AWD) across the lineup.
## Interior
The touchscreen-based controls make for a minimalist, sparse cockpit. The Tesla Model Y is known for its two interior configurations, offering two or three rows for five- or seven-passenger seating, respectively. The Model Y gets standard synthetic leather upholstery and power-adjustable, heated front seats. Second-row heated seats are available. The second row is tight, and the third row, if applicable, is really only suitable for kids.
## Technology
The Model Y comes with a 15-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system, where nearly all the car’s controls live. It runs on Tesla’s proprietary interface, which will take some getting used to for those new to the brand. Tesla does not offer Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, but its system has tons of Tesla-specific features.
## Safety
The 2023 Tesla Model Y earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and top scores of “Good” in all crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2024 Model 3 a five-star overall rating. Neither organization has tested the 2024 model. Tesla fits every Model Y with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and traffic-sign recognition.
## Pricing
Though Tesla famously doesn’t confirm or deny information about new model years, and the automaker is also known for changing pricing on a whim, it’s expected that the 2024 Tesla Model Y will start at about $55,000, which is roughly in line with 2023 pricing. Potential buyers should look for more information in early 2024 and should consult with a tax professional to determine eligibility for state and federal EV tax incentives.

The Tesla Model Y has garnered enthusiastic feedback from owners across various model years, highlighting its impressive acceleration, advanced technology, and spacious interiors. Drivers appreciate the seamless transition to electric driving, along with significant savings on fuel and maintenance costs. However, some common concerns include the higher price tag, missing luxury features, and occasional discrepancies between the advertised and real-world range. Overall, the Model Y stands out as a strong contender in the electric vehicle market, offering a blend of performance and eco-friendliness.

What people say
I have a Model Y Long Range. It has amazing handling and power. The included autopilot is wonderful on the highway. The charging, if you can plug in at home, is easy, inexpensive and convenient. No gas stations, no oil changes. I will never go back to gas.
Such a nice and technologically advanced car but has no Heads-up feature.
Revolutionary Great Ergonomics Fast acceleration Technology to the next level
Beyond being a fun drive, the Model Y is a great experience. From entering the Tesla showroom to building your preferred car to submitting your credentials to finally purchasing it, the process is flawless. In addition, I found the Y to be the best value in the market due to its ride, size and handling.
If you need a car, that does everything, this is the one. You never have to see a gas station again. And you can travel from coast to coast without any real issues. Save money, save the environment, save mental/emotional well-being in a vehicle that can be piloted by you or on its own. 5 star crash safety. Nice looking design. Very comfortable interior. Near silent operation. Premium audio is a must. Definitely order the key fob or use your phone as the key. The credit card key gets annoying fast. I love the acceleration, it’s magnificent, even fully loaded with passengers or cargo. Don’t believe the naysayers, These cars are fully ready for public use and will save you money.
Tesla Model Y FAQs
Is Tesla Model Y selling well?
Yes, the Tesla Model Y is selling exceptionally well. In 2023, it became the most popular new car globally, with over 1.2 million units sold. This achievement put it ahead of popular models like Toyota's RAV4 and Corolla. The Model Y's success underscores the growing demand for electric vehicles and Tesla's strong market presence.
Why did the Tesla Model Y price drop?
Tesla temporarily reduced the price of the Model Y by $1,000, likely in response to anticipated lower delivery results. This discount, although brief, was implemented to boost sales and maintain its position as Tesla's most popular vehicle. Such price adjustments can occasionally occur as part of Tesla's dynamic pricing strategy.
Which Tesla is better, the 3 or Y?
Choosing between the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y depends on your specific needs. The Model 3 Long Range offers a slightly better range compared to the Model Y Long Range. However, the Model Y provides more interior space, optional third-row seating, and additional features, making it generally more expensive than the Model 3. The decision should be based on whether you prioritize range, space, or price.
How much does the 2026 Tesla Model Y cost?
The 2026 Tesla Model Y has a starting MSRP of $44,990 and can cost up to $59,990 depending on the trim package and upgrades. The 235 new models for sale on CarGurus have an average listing price of $46,674.
