Customer summary
Overall, the Mercedes-Benz GLS has received strong praise from owners for its luxurious comfort, smooth ride, and impressive performance across all model years. Many drivers love the powerful engine and high-quality craftsmanship that result in a premium driving experience. Several reviewers also noted that the interior space could be better optimized to compete with other luxury SUVs.

How much does the Mercedes-Benz GLS cost in today's market?
Used Mercedes-Benz GLS prices span a wide range depending on model year. Here's what the market looks like right now:
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Round Range |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $79,629 | $79,465 – $90,743 |
| 2024 | $72,824 | $72,622 – $82,386 |
| 2023 | $65,229 | $65,271 – $72,113 |
| 2022 | $48,156 | $48,171 – $56,144 |
| 2021 | $48,263 | $47,874 – $53,241 |
| 2020 | $32,859 | $32,904 – $38,682 |
| 2019 | $23,737 | $23,733 – $27,110 |
| 2018 | $21,551 | $21,492 – $24,961 |
| 2017 | $18,277 | $18,213 – $20,074 |
The Mercedes-Benz GLS's current nationwide average price is $53,269, and its year-round low is $52,285.15. That puts the model in a broad price band that reflects how much equipment and capability varies by year and trim. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Mercedes-Benz GLS a good car?
Yes — the Mercedes-Benz GLS earns a strong reputation with owners for comfort, ride quality, and craftsmanship, and the available expert reviews reinforce its upscale character. The all-generations owner rating is 4.69/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the GLS for its luxurious cabin, smooth ride, and strong performance. Many also highlight the high-quality materials and premium feel that make it stand out as a three-row luxury SUV. Across the model years, the recurring trade-offs are fuel economy, price, and interior packaging.
Expert reviews rate the 2024 and 2021 models among the highest across all years.
The honest trade-offs are that fuel economy is a recurring concern, third-row access can be awkward, and some years bring less cargo space than you might expect from a large SUV.
33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Mercedes-Benz GLS models reliable?
Owners consistently give the GLS high marks for comfort, craftsmanship, and overall driving satisfaction, and the expert reviews echo that premium, well-finished character. The model’s strong owner ratings across the lineup point to a vehicle that many shoppers find rewarding to live with.
- Owners rate the Mercedes-Benz GLS between 4.5 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by checking service history, because higher-mileage examples can bring more wear and more variable upkeep costs.
What should I look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz GLS?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2027 | 98.8% |
| 2026 | 96.9% |
| 2025 | 95.6% |
| 2024 | 93.2% |
| 2023 | 90.7% |
| 2022 | 87.2% |
| 2021 | 83.6% |
| 2020 | 75.7% |
| 2019 | 70.8% |
| 2018 | 64.9% |
| 2017 | 64.6% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Nearly 40 safety and driver-assistance systems appear on the 2026 GLS’ standard equipment list, including Mercedes’ innovative Pre-Safe, Crosswind Assist, and Active Emergency Stop Assist technologies.
- Infotainment: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a navigation system with augmented reality enhancement are standard.
- Fuel efficiency: It’s EPA-rated at 21 mpg combined, but with the standard Dynamic Select system in the Comfort driving mode for most of the test-drive, we observed 19.4 mpg on our mountainous Southern California evaluation route.
Which Mercedes-Benz GLS trim should I buy?
The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS offers these trims:
- GLS 450: The best-value choice if you want the base GLS with the standard turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, mild-hybrid assist, nine-speed automatic transmission, standard 4Matic AWD, and Airmatic adaptive suspension.
- GLS 580: Step up for more power and a more performance-focused feel within the GLS lineup.
- AMG GLS 63: Choose this if you want the high-performance AMG version with the most aggressive capability in the range.
- Maybach GLS 600: Pick this for the most opulent GLS experience and the highest level of luxury.
What Mercedes-Benz GLS do most buyers choose?
The Mercedes-Benz GLS years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 1,504 | 33.2% |
| 2024 | 1,448 | 33.9% |
| 2023 | 1,238 | 34.3% |
| 2018 | 987 | 32.4% |
| 2026 | 946 | 33.3% |
| 2022 | 893 | 35.5% |
Those higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right color, mileage, and equipment mix. They also sit in the part of the lineup where newer features and broader availability often overlap.
What is the Mercedes-Benz GLS's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | $32,859 | −15.07% |
| 2022 | $48,156 | −14.25% |
| 2018 | $21,551 | −13.66% |
| 2019 | $23,737 | −12.45% |
| 2025 | $79,629 | −12.26% |
| 2024 | $72,824 | −11.62% |
| 2023 | $65,229 | −9.4% |
| 2021 | $48,263 | −9.36% |
| 2017 | $18,277 | −8.78% |
The table shows broad downward movement across the GLS lineup, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. Several years have double-digit declines, so you may find stronger value in recent-model inventory than you would expect from a luxury SUV. The smallest changes are still negative, which means prices are generally easing rather than rising.
The 2017, 2021, and 2023 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Mercedes-Benz GLS safe?
- 2026: 7/10
- 2024: 10/10
- 2022: 6/10
- 2021: 9/10
Nearly 40 safety and driver-assistance systems appear on the 2026 GLS’ standard equipment list, including Mercedes’ innovative Pre-Safe, Crosswind Assist, and Active Emergency Stop Assist technologies.
For the safest used buy, the 2024 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
Should I buy a used Mercedes-Benz GLS now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −12.26% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −11.62%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.9%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $79,629. The Mercedes-Benz GLS offers a quiet, comfortable cabin with a composed ride and a refined, family-friendly character.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: A turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six provides the 2026 GLS 450’s motive force, with a bit of mild-hybrid assist. The powertrain supplies 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, and is coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD), accelerating the GLS 450 0-60 mph in a manufacturer-estimated 5.8 seconds.
- Tech: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a navigation system with augmented reality enhancement are standard, and online music access is part of the Mercedes-Benz Digital Extras connected services.

Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is a large luxury SUV that competes against the BMW X7, the Audi Q7, and the Cadillac Escalade.
What’s New for the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class
Mercedes-Benz last redesigned the GLS-Class for the 2020 model year, and it goes into 2024 mostly unchanged, though Mercedes has made some updates to its MBUX infotainment system. This three-row SUV is comfortable and spacious, particularly in AMG and Maybach versions, and offers impressive performance as well, with a range of potent powertrains.
Design
The Mercedes GLS is a big, brash SUV with a high beltline, and in terms of appearance, the two standard models don’t do much to distinguish themselves in the segment. The big grille and Mercedes badge up front are really the only distinctive features. The AMG model brings a much more sporty look, and the Mercedes-Maybach version wears two-tone paint, tons of chrome, and some of the shiniest wheels you’re likely to ever see.
Powertrain
The 2024 GLS 450 entry-level model starts off with 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque courtesy of a mild-hybrid, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, as well as a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD) that come standard across the range. The 580 model gets a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that makes 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The AMG GLS 63 features a tuned, hand-built version of the V8 that makes 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, and this model also gets an adaptive air suspension system, performance brakes, performance exhaust, and a rear limited-slip differential. Finally, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, new for 2024, gets yet another version of the V8, tuned for 550 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. EPA ratings for the GLS 450 are 18 mpg city, 23 highway, and 20 combined, and that’s the best you’ll do in this lineup by far.
Interior
The 2024 GLS-Class can seat six or seven passengers across three rows, depending on the configurations chosen, though the Maybach version has only two rows. This year, two new leather colors are added to the already extensive options menu. The cabin is sophisticated and welcoming, with tons of ways to make the seats even more comfortable, and trim options such as piano lacquer, high-gloss wood, and silver-finished vents. The cargo hold has 17.4 cubic feet of space, which opens up to a maximum of 84.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows of seats folded down.
Technology
The GLS pairs a 12.3-inch touch-screen infotainment display with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that can be customized with three themes and three modes to provide the driver’s most-desired information in a choice of layouts. The MBUX infotainment system features Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a voice-command system that can understand complex requests. Other standard features include wireless device charging, nine USB ports, and a premium Burmester stereo.
Safety
The Mercedes-Benz GLS has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which is common for luxury vehicles. Standard safety features include a reversing camera, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, hands-free parking assist, a driver-alertness monitoring system, and safe-exit assist. Options include adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, lane-departure warning, and traffic-sign recognition.
Pricing
As of this writing, Mercedes-Benz lists pricing for the 2024 GLS-Class as starting at $87,000 for the GLS 450, while the GLS 580 starts at $112,000. If you’re looking at more premium versions of the GLS, the AMG GLS 63 has an MSRP of $145,580, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS starts at $170,000. The 2024 Mercedes GLS is available now.
