For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by checking maintenance history carefully, especially on older examples and higher-mileage cars.
What should I look for when buying a used Ford Mustang?
Across all model years, at 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 93% |
| 2025 | 91.4% |
| 2024 | 89.8% |
| 2023 | 86.8% |
| 2022 | 78.5% |
| 2021 | 74.1% |
| 2020 | 69.3% |
| 2019 | 65.2% |
| 2018 | 61.2% |
| 2017 | 56.8% |
| 2016 | 55.8% |
| 2015 | 57% |
| 2014 | 58.9% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams
- Infotainment: a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with the Sync 4 infotainment system, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates the four-cylinder EcoBoost will return 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. The V8-powered GT is rated at 15/24 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined with the automatic transmission.
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers these trims:
- EcoBoost: The entry engine is the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic; it suits you if you want the most accessible way into the lineup.
- EcoBoost High Performance: This version adds the Torsen limited-slip differential, leather steering wheel, stickier and larger tires, and upgraded Brembo brake calipers, making it the best-value choice if you want sharper handling and stronger hardware.
- GT: The 5.0-liter V8 brings 480 hp and 415 lb-ft, plus a standard six-speed manual and available 10-speed automatic; it suits you if you want the classic muscle-car experience.
- GT Premium: This trim adds the GT’s V8 character with the more upscale equipment set and is the one to choose if you want the GT Convertible, which is offered only in Premium trim.
- Dark Horse: At the top of the range, this trim produces 500 hp and adds several other performance enhancements for buyers who want the most serious performance focus.
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3,368 | 33.3% |
| 2025 | 3,342 | 33.7% |
| 2023 | 2,972 | 33% |
| 2020 | 2,261 | 30.5% |
| 2021 | 2,145 | 30.3% |
| 2019 | 2,091 | 30% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of availability, newer features, and a healthy spread of prices. More listings also usually make it easier to compare trims and find the right equipment level for your budget.
What is the Ford Mustang's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $42,679 | −9.53% |
| 2024 | $37,888 | −4.66% |
| 2020 | $26,570 | −4.58% |
| 2016 | $19,475 | −4.26% |
| 2019 | $26,591 | −4.0% |
| 2017 | $21,603 | −3.58% |
| 2018 | $22,690 | −2.75% |
| 2021 | $31,066 | −1.93% |
| 2015 | $20,226 | −0.6% |
| 2022 | $34,391 | +1.99% |
| 2023 | $32,739 | +7.25% |
| 2014 | $16,090 | +7.56% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which creates more opportunity for used buyers. A few years are moving higher, so the market is not moving in one direction across the board. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer listings shown here, while some older and mid-cycle years are still firming up.
The 2015 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2014, 2023, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.7% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.3%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $37,888. The Ford Mustang offers iconic styling and a strong performance character that make it easy to shop across trims and years.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2024 Mustang's entry-level engine is the EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, and the GT's Coyote 5.0-liter V8 is good for 480 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: All 2024 Mustangs come with a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard along with Amazon Alexa integration.
- Safety: Standard safety features for all Mustangs include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams.
- Starting price: The base 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost has a starting price of $32,515.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Customers say
Overall, the Ford Mustang consistently impresses drivers with its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and iconic styling throughout the years. Owners frequently praise the exhilarating acceleration, handling, and variety of engine options. The thrilling sound of the V8 engines adds to the driving enjoyment. However, some drivers express concerns about limited backseat space and fuel economy, as well as occasional issues with reliability and build quality in older models. Despite these drawbacks, the Mustang is often celebrated as a beloved classic that offers both excitement and nostalgia.

One of the few cars yet available with a manual transmission. Gotta love the V8. Imho, UI for all the tech could be a bit more intuitive and easy to use but, some of this is my need to learn it. Sure wish they still provided a printed owners manual.
