The main tradeoffs center on overly complex infotainment, uneven performance in PHEV form, and polarizing design.
27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 7 Series models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the BMW 7 Series for its luxurious feel, strong performance, and comfortable ride. Expert reviews also reinforce its appeal as a well-equipped flagship sedan with a deep feature set and a refined driving experience.
- Owners rate the BMW 7 Series between 1.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied to the model’s complexity and the potential for higher upkeep, so a careful pre-purchase inspection and service-history review matter.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 7 Series?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 75.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2027 | 97.2% |
| 2026 | 96% |
| 2025 | 94.9% |
| 2024 | 91.5% |
| 2023 | 85% |

| 2020 | 70.7% |
| 2019 | 64.5% |
| 2018 | 59.2% |
| 2017 | 56.2% |
| 2016 | 60% |
| 2015 | 60.2% |
| 2014 | 63.7% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlamps, parking sensors, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist
- Infotainment: a massive curved-screen display that melds a 12.3-inch driver's screen with a 14.9-inch infotainment display, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: the EPA rates the 750e at 65 MPGe (electric) and 25 mpg (gas) combined, and the 740i and 760i are also quite efficient, delivering 28 mpg (or 27 with AWD) and 20 mpg combined, respectively
Which BMW 7 Series trim should I buy?
The 2024 BMW 7 Series offers these trims:
- 740i: the entry point, with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive, and the best-value position in the lineup
- 740i xDrive: adds all-wheel drive and is called out as the best value trim
- 750e xDrive: adds plug-in hybrid power, 483 hp, 516 lb-ft of torque, and the ability to cover short trips on electric power
- 760i: adds the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, standard AWD, and the most vigorous driving experience, along with luxury options such as two-tone paint or Cashmere wool interior
What BMW 7 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 7 Series years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 738 | 30.1% |
| 2022 | 715 | 29.4% |
| 2024 | 656 | 30.6% |
| 2025 | 567 | 32.1% |
| 2021 | 535 | 28.6% |
| 2019 | 507 | 27.4% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more choices on trim, mileage, and condition, which makes it easier to compare listings and find a setup that fits your budget. They also tend to be the years shoppers cross-shop most often, so pricing and deal availability are easier to gauge.
What is the BMW 7 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $82,662 | −19.13% |
| 2023 | $62,545 | −14.7% |
| 2022 | $43,045 | −14.1% |
| 2024 | $69,232 | −14.05% |
| 2019 | $24,667 | −13.52% |
| 2020 | $32,190 | −11.57% |
| 2021 | $38,327 | −11.4% |
| 2016 | $18,018 | −9.39% |
| 2017 | $19,901 | −9.29% |
| 2018 | $23,080 | −9.27% |
| 2015 | $14,375 | −8.39% |
| 2014 | $13,436 | −3.61% |
Most model years are down by double digits, which creates attractive entry points for used buyers. The steepest drops are concentrated in the newer years, while the older generations show smaller declines. That pattern suggests you can find stronger value in recent used examples without giving up the flagship-sedan experience.
The 2014, 2015, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

For the safest used buy, the 2023 and 2024 models both post the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used BMW 7 Series now or wait for the next model?

- Tech: Behind the wheel, 7 Series drivers are greeted by a massive curved-screen display that melds a 12.3-inch driver's screen with a 14.9-inch infotainment display, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included.
- Safety: BMW now offers a slate of standard active safety features, including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlamps, parking sensors, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Starting price: For 2024, the BMW 7 Series starts at $97,395 (including a $995 destination fee).
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2028 inventory to mature.

Unfortunately, the front end re-style is not as attractive as the prior car (2020-2022) and the dash layout looks like a Mercedes. Think Ill be keeping my 2020 750i which is a fantastic car. One of the best Ive ever owned. As a frame of reference Ive had Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Ferrari and more. The 750i is the most serene ride ever.

It is a beautiful car with great feature s and amazing technology. The ride was great minus the little road noise but the great audio system take care of that. Its 4 out of 5 car aesthetically, and with its options and functions.

BMW 7 Series test drive
overall

The 7 Series is luxurious, fast, and efficient, but its complex systems and quirky styling aren't for everyone.
Redesigned for 2023, the 7 Series is BMW's full-size flagship sedan, arch-rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8, and newcomers like the Genesis G90. For 2024, BMW has added the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) 750e and lightly updated the infotainment system. Unfortunately, these additions don't change the 7 Series calculus. The 750e offers a boost in power and efficiency over the low-end 740i, but it costs more, has a disjointed driving personality, and quickly eats its electric charge. Despite the update, the car's digital systems remain frustratingly complex.
Verdict: The 2024 BMW 7 Series has lots to offer luxury buyers, including features like a rear-seat theatre and cashmere upholstery, plus performance and fuel efficiency that are often superior to most rivals, few of whom offer PHEV options. But the car's frustrating digital systems and controls undermine the experience.
