Is the Volvo XC90 a good car?
Yes — the Volvo XC90 is a strong choice if you want a luxury three-row SUV with a polished cabin, family-friendly practicality, and a safety-first character. The all-generations owner rating is 4.65/5 across every model year in the data.

Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2020 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on the third row, which is useful but tight in some years, along with tech and powertrain choices that can feel less polished in certain trims. Some recent expert reviews also point to pricing and sound-system packaging as part of the ownership equation.
35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

- Owners rate the Volvo XC90 between 4.5 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example with a clean history and paying close attention to age-related wear on older models.
What should I look for when buying a used Volvo XC90?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 84.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 96% |
| 2025 | 94.6% |
| 2024 | 92.1% |
| 2023 | 90.9% |
| 2022 | 87.5% |
| 2021 | 82% |
| 2020 | 76.6% |
| 2019 | 74.1% |
| 2018 | 70.1% |
| 2017 | 69.1% |
| 2016 | 68% |
| 2014 | 65.8% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Infotainment: the larger touchscreen infotainment system with Google Built-In and standard Apple CarPlay, including wireless and USB-C connectivity.
- Fuel efficiency: the XC90 plug-in hybrid offers up to 33 miles of pure-electric range on a full charge, and the T8 also offers the best fuel economy, at an EPA-rated max of 27 mpg.
Which Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?
The 2025 Volvo XC90 offers these trims:
- Core: the entry trim and best-value starting point, with the B5 mild-hybrid powertrain and seven-seat layout.
- Plus: adds the Orrefors crystal shift knob and more premium interior material choices, making it a strong step up for shoppers who want extra polish.
- Ultra: brings the top-end presentation, including the Harman Kardon Premium Sound system and available Bowers & Wilkins audio, plus the head-up display.
What Volvo XC90 do most buyers choose?
The Volvo XC90 years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 2,571 | 36.8% |
| 2025 | 2,500 | 35.1% |
| 2023 | 2,243 | 36.9% |
| 2022 | 1,602 | 36.6% |
| 2026 | 1,523 | 33.8% |
| 2019 | 1,139 | 36.1% |
Those higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a broad mix of pricing, features, and availability. More listings also make it easier to compare condition, equipment, and deal quality before you buy.
What is the Volvo XC90's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $29,489 | −24.72% |
| 2021 | $26,611 | −15.63% |
| 2023 | $38,770 | −14.99% |
| 2020 | $23,096 | −14.36% |
| 2017 | $15,510 | −13.43% |

The table shows broad downward movement across the XC90 lineup, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. Newer model years are still declining, but the changes are smaller than the sharper drops seen in several older years. That pattern gives you more room to find value without giving up the XC90’s core appeal.
The 2024, 2025, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

For the safest used buy, the 2020 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
Should I buy a used Volvo XC90 now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −9.03% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −8.39%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 35.1% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 36.8%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $45,077. The Volvo XC90 offers a comfortable, understated cabin with a refined, family-friendly character that suits everyday luxury use.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Volvo continues to offer a choice of three powertrains in the XC90, all with standard AWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the XC90 plug-in hybrid offers up to 33 miles of pure-electric range on a full charge.
- Tech: The infotainment system is larger and offers sharper resolution, it runs the new user interface, and Apple CarPlay connectivity is standard and worked seamlessly when connected both wirelessly and via USB-C cable.
- Safety: The XC90’s standard advanced driver-assistance systems operated smoothly, and the suite includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, and the blind-spot information system.
- Starting price: Base MSRP for the least-expensive version of the 2025 Volvo XC90 sits at $59,745 after destination.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

I really wanted this vehicle to work out for us, but it’s just not practical to have people using the back row. Getting in and out is cumbersome just due to how the seats are designed and how they unlock and move. There’s just not enough room for it to be a good experience even for kids, much less a teenager. The back two rows need some re-thinking. For instance, Honda’s seat system in the back two rows is far superior.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Volvo XC90 stands out as an understated entry in the luxury three-row crossover segment. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, so it remains recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved as well, with the T5 and T6 engines replaced by the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. It also brings forward-thinking infotainment technology that will appeal to Google users.
Inside, the XC90’s strengths are easy to appreciate: it has a stylish design, a beautiful interior, and impressive technology. Those qualities help give it a polished, upscale feel that fits its role as a family-oriented luxury SUV. At the same time, it is not without compromises. Cargo space is limited, the third-row seats are difficult to access, and the technology can feel too touchscreen-dependent.
