Should I buy a used Volvo XC40 now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:

- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 34.4% good and great deals, and the 2023 model has 35.8%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $33,932. The Volvo XC40 offers a distinctive Scandinavian design, a premium-feeling cabin, and practical everyday usefulness.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2023 XC40 uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with a 13-horsepower integrated starter generator, and Volvo says B4 and B5 models can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds and 6.1 seconds, respectively.
- Tech: The 2023 XC40 brings the Android-based infotainment system, Google Maps, Google Assistant, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9-inch touchscreen.
- Safety: The latest model adds adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist, side parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera system on the top trim.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

I love this vehicle. The safest little tank in it's class! Extremely comfortable, great looking, great size without feeling too big, good fuel economy and again, very safe and you can feel it in the drive. Responsive, stable and reliable. My 4th Volvo and I will never go to any other brand. In the past one saved my life and my family and children are Volvo owners for life!

Car runs & drives great. Looks very nice Have to use premium gas. Stereo works great. My only 2 complaints are: Touchscreen takes a lot of practice to find what you’re looking for. I’m sure after a few months I’ll have it all set upthe way I want it. Door handles on the outside froze down on me & it felt like I was going to rip the handle off trying to open the door. Mine is due for a software recall update so hopefully that will work out some of the issues I’ve had with the big touchscreen freezing up.

Amazing safety ratings! The Volvo XC40 was awarded 5 out of 5 ratings on all IIHS crash tests is the only small SUV to achieve a “Good” rating in every individual test category (as of December 2022), based on the test showing minimal risk of injuries for all passengers. Volvo quality, safety and reliability. No other similar vehicle on the market can beat that.

Why it stands out
The 2025 Volvo XC40 stands out because it blends compact-SUV practicality with the kind of distinctive design and upscale feel that helped define Volvo’s modern comeback. It has a stylish, minimalist cabin, strong fit and finish, quality materials, and thoughtful details that make it feel more expensive than its price tag suggests. It also manages to be useful, with impressive rear seat room for its footprint and a large cargo area with a folding floor divider. Standard Volvo safety tech adds to its appeal, making it a particularly attractive choice for buyers who want a premium small SUV that feels smartly designed rather than generic.
For 2025, the XC40’s lineup includes updated trim names and the Ultra trim at the top of the range. The model also benefits from the 2023 refresh, which brought a new front end, updated LED lights, a more aggressive front bumper design, and Volvo’s Google-based infotainment system with Google built-in apps. The XC40’s powertrain range is broad, with the B4 front-wheel-drive setup and the B5 all-wheel-drive setup, and the B4 and B5 both use a mild-hybrid system. That said, fuel efficiency is described as nothing special, and the touch-based interior controls can be fiddly, while poor rear visibility is another drawback buyers should keep in mind.
What makes the 2025 Volvo XC40 especially distinctive is that it offers a premium experience in a small package without losing the practical side that many luxury crossovers sacrifice. It feels thoughtfully engineered, from its cabin layout to its safety equipment, and it remains appealing for shoppers who want something a little different from the usual compact luxury SUV formula.
