What should I look for when buying a used Volkswagen Passat?

Across all model years, at 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: standard forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic rear braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control
• Infotainment: standard App-Connect smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth that can support two paired devices simultaneously
• Fuel efficiency: According to EPA fuel economy ratings, the Passat should return 28 mpg in combined driving. Instead, we saw 30.7 mpg on our mountainous Southern California testing loop, even when using Sport mode for the twisty bits.

Which Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Passat offers these trims:

• SE: the base trim includes standard forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic rear braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control; it suits shoppers who want the core Passat experience with strong standard safety
• R-Line: adds automatic high-beam headlights, HD Radio, a navigation system with improved voice recognition, and a standard Fender premium audio system; it suits buyers who want a more feature-rich setup
• Limited Edition: adds exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels, black mirror caps, special badges, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and a park-assist system; it is the best-value trim if you want the most distinctive equipment and the fullest feature set

What Volkswagen Passat do most buyers choose?

The Volkswagen Passat years with the most listings are 2016, 2017, and 2014.

Those higher-volume years tend to draw more shoppers because they offer a wider selection of listings and more price points to compare. That usually makes it easier to find a Passat that fits your budget and equipment preferences.

What is the Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

Most Passat model years are showing declines, and several of the newer ones are dropping by double digits. That creates a favorable setup for used buyers who want to step into a larger sedan at a lower price than before. A few older years are changing only slightly, which suggests steadier pricing in those cases.

The 2018, 2015, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
