Which Volkswagen Beetle trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle offers these trims:
- S: The value-focused starting point, with LED running lights, heated mirrors, a 5-inch touchscreen, a reversing camera, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
- SE: Adds a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and VW Car-Net Security and Service.
- Coast: Builds on the S with the Style & Comfort Package and adds a sunroof, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, special houndstooth cloth upholstery, a surfboard-style dash pad, and unique Deep Sea Teal paint. This is the best-value trim if you want the Beetle’s personality with a richer feature set.
- Dune: Adds a special paint job and graphics, a larger rear spoiler, 18-inch wheels, an extra half-inch of ground clearance, a wider stance, unique sport seats, and leather.
What Volkswagen Beetle do most buyers choose?
The Volkswagen Beetle years with the most listings are 2014, 2015, and 2018.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | 479 | 29.4% |
| 2015 | 359 | 31.5% |
| 2018 | 317 | 32.8% |
| 2016 | 282 | 32.6% |
| 2017 | 275 | 34.9% |
| 2019 | 237 | 32.1% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more choices, which can make it easier to compare trims, colors, and prices. They also tend to be the years shoppers return to most often because the market has more examples to choose from.
What is the Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | $19,582 | −1.06% |
| 2015 | $13,249 | +2.52% |
| 2019 | $25,749 | +5.13% |

The 2014, 2016, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Customers say
Overall, the Volkswagen Beetle has been cherished by owners for its fun driving experience, unique and stylish design, and good fuel economy across various model years. Many drivers appreciate its spacious interiors, particularly in convertible models, and solid performance. However, common criticisms include a lack of modern features, limited trunk space, and occasional reliability issues, especially in older models. While praised for their charm, some drivers mention high maintenance costs and variable performance. The Beetle remains a beloved classic that evokes nostalgia while providing a distinct driving experience.

Why it stands out
The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle stands out for its retro styling and the flexibility of its trim range, which lets buyers tailor the car to their needs without paying for features they do not want. It is also described as not being a bargain no matter which trim you choose, so its appeal is less about low pricing and more about choosing the right mix of equipment and personality.
This model year keeps the Beetle’s fun character while offering three engine choices, including a new, more powerful TDI clean diesel that also improves fuel economy. The summary also notes that the Beetle Convertible TDI loses some of the cute this year, making it a little more guy-friendly than in years past. Owner feedback reinforces the car’s style, fuel efficiency, and reliability, while also pointing to a lack of technological features, particularly navigation, as a drawback.
