| 2015 | $12,561 | $11,400 – $12,670 |
| 2014 | $11,088 | $9,947 – $11,161 |
The Toyota Prius's current nationwide average price is $18,888, and its lowest point over the past year was $14,719. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Prius is a strong choice if you want a hybrid that blends efficiency, practicality, and everyday comfort. The all-generations owner rating is 4.66/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Prius for its outstanding fuel economy, reliability, and comfortable ride. Cargo space and safety also come up often as reasons shoppers value it for commuting and daily use.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2024 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs in recent expert reviews center on real-world fuel economy falling short of EPA ratings, a cramped back seat, and limited cargo space.
36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Prius models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Prius as a dependable hybrid with excellent fuel economy and a comfortable ride. Across the model years in the data, it also earns praise for practicality, value, and everyday usability.
- Owners rate the Toyota Prius between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to age, mileage, and hybrid-system wear than to the Prius name itself, so a careful history check and inspection matter most on older examples.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Prius?
Across all model years, at 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 91.4% |
| 2025 | 89.5% |
| 2024 | 88% |
| 2023 | 83.3% |
| 2022 | 78.2% |
| 2021 | 72.3% |
| 2020 | 68.3% |
| 2019 | 64.5% |
| 2018 | 59.8% |
| 2017 | 56.8% |
| 2016 | 52.2% |
| 2015 | 50.9% |
| 2014 | 49.7% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0)
- Infotainment: Toyota Audio Multimedia (TAM) infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA gave the Prius Nightshade Edition a 52 mpg rating in the combined, city, and highway categories.
Which Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota Prius offers these trims:
- LE: The entry trim comes with the Toyota Audio Multimedia system and an 8-inch touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- XLE: This trim adds more equipment and can be paired with the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, making it the best-value choice for shoppers who want a richer tech setup.
- Nightshade Edition: This trim adds black 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, and an exclusive Karashi paint color for a more distinctive look.
- Limited: This trim brings the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen and the most upscale tech setup in the lineup.
What Toyota Prius do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Prius years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2026.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,471 | 45% |
| 2025 | 1,441 | 45.6% |
| 2026 | 944 | 50.4% |
| 2023 | 930 | 37.2% |
| 2014 | 744 | 32.1% |
| 2016 | 680 | 32.5% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more shopping choice, more price competition, and a better chance of finding the trim and condition you want. They also tend to be the easiest years to compare side by side because there are more listings available.
What is the Toyota Prius's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $28,842 | −7.6% |
| 2023 | $27,760 | −0.15% |
| 2018 | $17,695 | +0.14% |
| 2021 | $21,271 | +0.62% |
| 2022 | $22,922 | +0.64% |
| 2017 | $16,499 | +1.29% |
| 2024 | $29,535 | +1.46% |
| 2016 | $15,208 | +1.68% |
| 2020 | $21,162 | +1.84% |
| 2014 | $11,088 | +2.57% |
| 2019 | $19,758 | +3.11% |
| 2015 | $12,561 | +5.44% |
The table shows a mixed picture, with several recent years edging down while many older years are still rising. That means you can find some softer pricing in newer model years, but values remain firm across much of the lineup. The biggest increases are concentrated in older examples, which suggests continued demand for well-kept Prius models.
The 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2015, 2019, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Should I buy a used Toyota Prius now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −7.6% versus a year ago, and the 2023 model is at −0.15%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 45.6% good and great deals, and the 2023 model has 37.2%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $29,535. The Toyota Prius offers a stylish, practical hybrid character that makes it easy to live with every day.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The Prius’ hybrid powertrain includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an 83-kilowatt electric motor, and Toyota says the net output measures 194 horsepower.
- Tech: Every 2025 Prius comes equipped with a Toyota Audio Multimedia (TAM) infotainment system, and both TAM systems include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) is standard in every 2025 Prius, and the collection also includes Proactive Driving Assist (PDA).
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

The car is great. Awesome MGPs. I love the way I fit in the cockpit, it feels like I'm driving a spaceship. Driving is super smooth. I wish I had a backup cam because it's difficult to see out of the back window. Decent turn radius. Extra hidden storage tray in the trunk. You can pull back on the joystick to slow down without wearing out the brakes. There is a filter button for when you are driving through a stinky area. Even though it is a higher tech car I still feel like I can work on it without have to buy a bunch of unique tools. Now I just need to figure out how to maximize the MPGs by driving slower. Even with my lead foot I average 41 MPG.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota Prius stands out by blending style, practicality, and affordability in a way that makes it easy to recommend for everyday use. It recently won the 2024 World Car Design of the Year, and it also offers a practical interior that can carry up to five people. For shoppers focused on running costs, it delivers up to 57 mpg in combined driving, and prices start at less than $30,000.
It is also appealing because it offers all-wheel drive and a plug-in hybrid powertrain, giving buyers more flexibility in how they want to configure it. Cargo space is limited, though, with up to 23.8 cubic feet behind the back seat, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, the Prius remains a strong value thanks to its fuel efficiency, good safety ratings, and comfortable front seats.
