About the Toyota GR86
The Toyota GR86, formerly known as the Toyota 86 and the Scion FR-S before that, was renamed upon its redesign for the 2022 model year to honor Toyota’s Gazoo Racing performance heritage; before the redesign, previous incarnations went back to 2012. The GR86 is also nearly identical to the Subaru BRZ, which was developed and is produced in a partnership between the two companies. This affordable rear-wheel drive (RWD) sports coupe is fun to drive and competes with the aforementioned Subaru as well as the Porsche Cayman and Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Comparison: Is the Toyota GR86 better than the Porsche Cayman?
The Porsche Cayman, one of the brand’s most affordable sports cars, is a great choice. It’s upscale and comfortable, and its performance far outshines the Toyota GR86, so the answer here is yes. That said, the Toyota GR86 is much more affordable and is also a great choice for those who can’t swing the payments on a Porsche.
Is the Toyota GR86 a reliable car?
The Toyota GR86 benefits from the brand’s good overall reliability. The GR86 received a score of 77 points (out of a possible 100) in the most recent J.D. Power customer satisfaction rankings, indicating Average reliability.
Is the Toyota GR86 worth the cost?
Yes, it’s a solid choice for a sports car. It’s not as powerful as most others on the market, but that’s reflected in its price, and it’s a hoot to drive despite its modest engine.

The Toyota GR86 is celebrated by owners for its fun driving experience, nimble handling, and affordability across its model years. Many drivers find it to be an enjoyable sports car that delivers strong performance and engaging handling. The stylish design and interior add to its appeal. However, some drivers express concerns about its lack of power relative to the price and note limited passenger space, particularly criticizing the rear seats. Overall, the GR86 is seen as a great option for driving enthusiasts who prioritize performance and fun over practicality.

What people say
The most fun, raw, lightweight, affordable vehicle you can buy right now.
In the past three years Ive purchased a new Porsche Cayman, a new Hyundai Veloster, and this GR86. The Porsche was unreliable from day one and the dealer never could repair it. The Veloster was quirky looking, but it performed better than the Porsche and its 8 speed DCT was MUCH better than the 7 speed DCT in the Porsche. But the GR86 looks better than either of the other two and is more fun to drive because of the manual transmission. The GR86 doesnt have quite as much horsepower but it handles better and because it is a non turbo, I expect better long term reliability.
It’s very fun to drive, swings around corners, and has a nice luxurious interior
Great handling, no spare tire though, if you are in market for one.
It is all about handling. Not big, comfy, or quiet, it is nimble and so much fun to drive. Most like the Mazda Miata without the rag top.
