Which Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2026 Subaru Outback offers these trims:
- Premium: Entry-level model with a 2.5-liter boxer engine, standard AWD, and a starting MSRP of $36,445.
- Touring: Adds several niceties and driver assists, including premium safety and convenience equipment, and is the higher-priced comfort-focused choice.
- Wilderness: Adds all-terrain tires and electronically controlled suspension dampers, plus 9.5 inches of ground clearance for more demanding terrain.
What Subaru Outback do most buyers choose?
The Subaru Outback years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 6,576 | 34.4% |

| 2023 | 5,365 | 34.3% |
| 2026 | 3,588 | 33.7% |
| 2022 | 3,328 | 34.4% |
| 2021 | 2,860 | 34% |
The highest-volume years tend to be the most popular because they give you a wider selection of trims, prices, and condition levels to compare. They also usually sit close to the sweet spot between newer features and used-car value.
What is the Subaru Outback's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | $10,813 | −8.75% |
| 2019 | $17,738 | −8.48% |
| 2022 | $24,009 | −8.42% |
| 2018 | $15,908 | −8.06% |
| 2014 | $9,039 | −7.85% |
| 2021 | $22,261 | −7.06% |
| 2023 | $26,341 | −7.02% |
| 2020 | $21,056 | −6.43% |
| 2024 | $28,971 | −6.27% |
| 2025 | $32,314 | −4.75% |
| 2017 | $14,330 | −4.69% |
| 2016 | $12,938 | −3.83% |
Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because prices have generally softened. The newer models are still declining, but at a slower pace than many older years, which suggests they’re retaining more of their value. Overall, the table points to broad downward movement rather than any meaningful price increases.
The 2016, 2017, and 2025 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Many drivers enjoy its smooth ride, impressive safety features, and cargo space, making it a favorite for families and outdoor enthusiasts. However, some have pointed out that the engine power can be underwhelming, particularly with base models, and there are common concerns about the infotainment system's complexity as well as some interior quality issues.

love my car so far, very smooth driving and the bluetooth is a nice feature as well as the heated seats, my model doesn’t have the sunroof which is a bummer but overall the vehicle is a beaut. very spacious for me and my dogs when we travel in the car for extended periods of time; and ample trunk space for anything we may pick up on the way.

Tranny problem, I took it for a test drive when driving at highway speed 100km and accelerating to pass transmission would go into neutral or not downshift into the correct gear.

Call me biased, but I don’t see why everyone doesn’t go for this car. Meets all my needs and it’s reliable, relatively affordable, and sleek looking, what more could I want

Why it stands out
The 2024 Subaru Outback stands out by sticking with the raised station wagon formula that helped define the midsize crossover segment. It is now in its sixth generation and was refreshed last year, yet it has kept the wagon-like shape while many rivals have grown into mini-SUVs. That gives it a distinctive blend of SUV-like ride height and visibility with a more practical footprint, which should appeal to buyers who want a smaller vehicle without giving up the sense of confidence many look for in an SUV.
For 2024, the Outback is offered in Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring trims, with further differentiation by powertrain. The updates this year include feature-enriched trim levels and trim-specific aesthetic tweaks, and the broad trim spread means shoppers can choose either a more upscale experience or a simpler, lower-cost version. It also brings a spacious interior, strong safety ratings, and a good ride quality. The main drawbacks are an underwhelming base engine and a dated infotainment system, so the Outback’s appeal is strongest for buyers who value comfort, practicality, and a familiar driving experience over the latest tech or outright performance.
