Overview
About the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class
The CL-Class was a large luxury coupe based on Mercedes-Benz’s flagship S-Class full-size sedan. As a two-door spinoff of the S-Class, the CL-Class was available in North America from 1998 to 2014 before being reintegrated back into the S-Class lineup. Befitting its origins, the CL-Class was known for its big, bold engines, superior ride quality, bullet-proof craftsmanship, and quiet cabin.

Comparison: Is the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class better than the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class?
When the CL-Class bade farewell, the CLA-Class joined the Mercedes-Benz family. One doesn’t replace the other, however. The CL-Class was simply absorbed back into the S-Class lineup while the CLA-Class filled the role of an entry-level compact sedan — a continental divide from the six-figure CL-Class. The CL-Class will satisfy deep-pocketed luxury performance car enthusiasts, while the CLA-Class is merely the affordable entry ticket into the world of Mercedes-Benz.
Is the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class a reliable car?
The CL-Class is rated above average for predicted long-term reliability and scored well in safety tests. Ownership and maintenance costs may be high, however, which is the general rule of them for premium and luxury brands.
Is the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class worth the cost?
The CL-Class is a formidable vehicle, despite having only two doors. Although a scale-tipping brute, the CL-Class offers elegance and grand tourer-like driving manners. But there is also power under its expansive hood courtesy of brawny V8 and V12 turbos. Perhaps a steep price at the onset, but the CL-Class more than matches those six figures in quality, performance, design, amenities, and sheer presence.
