Are Lexus LS models reliable?

Owners and experts consistently point to the Lexus LS as a quiet, comfortable, and durable luxury sedan with a strong reputation for long-term refinement. What should I look for when buying a used Lexus LS?

Across all model years, at 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ comes standard with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high beams.
• Infotainment: the updated infotainment system with touchscreen controls and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is rated at 19 mpg city and an impressive 30 mpg highway for RWD models. The AWD version knocks this down to 18/27, while the hybrid injects significant gains at 25/33 (RWD) and 23/31 (AWD).

Which Lexus LS trim should I buy?

The 2018 Lexus LS offers these trims:

• LS 500: the core model brings the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, 10-speed automatic, and a quiet, richly detailed cabin; it’s the best-value starting point for most shoppers.
• LS 500 F Sport: this version adds rear-axle steering, active stabilizer bars, staggered summer tires, variable-ratio steering, and stiffer tuning for sharper handling.
• LS 500h: this hybrid adds two electric motors, a lithium-ion battery, and 354 combined horsepower for buyers who want the hybrid powertrain.

What Lexus LS do most buyers choose?

The Lexus LS years with the most listings are 2017, 2014, and 2019.

Higher-volume years tend to draw more shoppers because they usually offer a broader mix of prices, trims, and condition levels. That gives you more chances to find a configuration that fits your budget and priorities.

What is the Lexus LS's resale value?

The price movement is mixed, with one recent year easing while several others are rising. That means some used LS models are becoming more attractive to buyers, while others are still holding or gaining value. The spread also suggests that condition, mileage, and trim can have a meaningful effect on what you pay.

The 2022, 2014, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Is the Lexus LS safe?

• 2018: 9/10

Lexus Safety System+ comes standard with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high beams.

For the safest used buy, the 2018 model posts the highest confirmed score of 9/10.

Should I buy a used Lexus LS now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2018 model is at −3.67% versus a year ago.
• Deal availability: The 2018 model has 35.7% good and great deals.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2017 model has the most listings. The Lexus LS offers a quiet cabin, premium materials, and a smooth, refined driving experience that make it especially appealing as a used luxury sedan.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The LS 500 comes with one powertrain. Instead of the previous model’s V8, the new LS employs a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 with 416 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, and with either rear- or all-wheel drive.
• Tech: Lexus has some original tricks no one else has copied yet, including the Lexus Concierge, an onboard owner’s manual with videos describing each of the driver-assistance systems, and 360-degree cameras that can automatically pan around the vehicle.
• Safety: Lexus Safety System+ comes standard with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high beams.
• Starting price: The $75,000 base price offers a lot of amenities.

If you're buying used today, the 2017 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
