The Lexus GX's current nationwide average price is $47,966, and its lowest point over the past year was $43,273. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Lexus GX a good car?
Yes — the Lexus GX is a strong choice if you want a luxury SUV with real capability and a premium feel. The all-generations owner rating is 4.64/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its rugged construction, off-road ability, and comfortable, upscale cabin. Reliability is another recurring theme, along with the GX’s distinctive character and strong long-term appeal.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2020 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs are poor fuel economy, a third row that feels tight in several years, and technology that can feel dated compared with newer rivals.
35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Lexus GX models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Lexus GX as durable, dependable, and well built, with strong comfort and a premium interior that holds up well over time. Expert coverage also reinforces its reputation for rugged construction and long-term appeal.
- Owners rate the Lexus GX between 4.17 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally shaped more by mileage, maintenance history, and prior use than by the model’s core reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used Lexus GX?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 75.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 98.2% |
| 2025 | 96.5% |
| 2024 | 92.6% |
| 2023 | 89% |
| 2022 | 81.5% |
| 2021 | 73.4% |
| 2020 | 67.1% |
| 2019 | 63.8% |
| 2018 | 57.9% |
| 2017 | 57% |
| 2016 | 53.1% |
| 2015 | 54.3% |
| 2014 | 52.8% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 3.0
- Infotainment: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the Lexus Interface infotainment system
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the GX 550 will get 17 mpg in combined city and highway driving. On our Southern California fuel economy test route, we came close to that, at 16.8 mpg. On the mountainous evaluation loop, we observed 16 mpg.
Which Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2026 Lexus GX offers these trims:
- Premium: The entry point in the lineup, with the GX’s core luxury-SUV setup and standard twin-turbo V6 power.
- Premium+: Adds extra equipment over Premium for shoppers who want a richer feature set without moving to the more specialized trims.
- Luxury: A comfort-focused step up for buyers who want a more upscale everyday GX.
- Luxury+: The most feature-rich luxury-oriented trim in the lineup.
- Overtrail: The best-value trim for buyers who want the GX’s off-road hardware, including rock rails, all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, hill-descent control, and a low-speed cruise control system.
- Overtrail+: Builds on Overtrail with additional equipment for buyers who want the most trail-ready GX with extra luxury content.
What Lexus GX do most buyers choose?
The Lexus GX years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,420 | 36.5% |
| 2023 | 1,361 | 37% |
| 2022 | 1,258 | 37.2% |
| 2025 | 977 | 33.7% |
| 2021 | 816 | 38.2% |
| 2020 | 809 | 39.3% |
Those higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, color, and price. They also sit in the sweet spot where newer features and broader availability overlap.
What is the Lexus GX's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $85,786 | −7.22% |
| 2024 | $78,752 | −7.21% |
| 2020 | $37,173 | −5.57% |
| 2016 | $23,814 | −4.91% |
| 2022 | $46,968 | −4.83% |
| 2018 | $28,949 | −2.75% |
| 2023 | $55,008 | −2.61% |
| 2017 | $26,605 | −2.49% |
| 2019 | $32,445 | −1.9% |
| 2014 | $20,972 | −1.77% |
| 2021 | $41,614 | −1.7% |
| 2015 | $22,468 | −1.09% |
Most model years are moving lower year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want more room to negotiate. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer models, while older years are changing more gradually. That pattern suggests the GX continues to soften in price across much of the lineup.
The 2015, 2021, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Lexus GX safe?
- 2026: 6/10
- 2025: 9/10
- 2023: 6/10
- 2022: 4/10
- 2021: 6/10
- 2020: 8/10
For the safest used buy, the 2025 model posts the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used Lexus GX now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −7.22% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.21%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.7% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 36.5%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $78,752. The Lexus GX offers a rugged, premium character that blends real off-road ability with a comfortable cabin and strong everyday versatility.
Consider waiting if:

Customers say
The Lexus GX is a well-loved luxury SUV known for its impressive off-road capabilities, robust construction, and luxurious interior. Most owners appreciate its comfort and reliability, especially on long drives. The V8 engine is favored for its power, providing a smooth and confident drive. However, many drivers express concern about its fuel economy and find the technology outdated compared to newer competitors. Overall, the GX stands out for its rugged yet refined feel, making it a top choice for families and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Reviewed a 2010 Lexus GX on Oct 22, 2025
The 2010 Lexus GX is generally a great SUV with a V8 engine shared with the Lexus LS460. Although it looks like a rugged heavy duty SUV, the weight of it tends to cause it to wear down its components like the suspension and engine. Trouble issues tend to be oil leaks from numerous places like the valve covers and cam towers. Additional issues include the dreaded coolant leak of the valley pan gasket and radiator. If you drive a used one, if you smell a sweet odor emanating from the engine, it's probably one of those aforementioned leaks of coolant. Should you buy one? Yes, with the caveat that most if not all aspects of the engine, coolant and suspension have been addressed. Also check CarFax websites for services performed and NHTSA for known issues reported.

Good reliable features. Yes for the price it’s a good value since it’s a Toyota. It’s missing a backup camera and Bluetooth. I’d compare it to the 4Runner.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Lexus GX stands out because it blends old-school toughness with luxury-SUV comfort. Even after a facelift, it remains one of the most dated luxury SUVs on the market, but that age also helps explain why it is so capable. For buyers who value off-road ability and a comfortable cabin more than the latest trends, that combination gives the GX a clear identity.
Lexus updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it more memorable, but the SUV still carries the feel of one of the oldest vehicles offered today. That dated character is a drawback if you want modern technology or especially exciting styling, both of which are listed as weaknesses. Still, the GX’s appeal is straightforward: it is comfortable, it has strong off-road capability, and it offers the kind of robust build and luxurious interior that many owners appreciate.
For shoppers who want a luxury SUV that can handle more than just pavement, the 2020 Lexus GX remains distinctive. It is not the most advanced choice, and its styling may not win everyone over, but its durability, comfort, and capability make it memorable in a segment where many rivals have moved away from specialization.
