Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the GX 550 will get 17 mpg in combined city and highway driving. On our Southern California fuel economy test route, we came close to that, at 16.8 mpg. On the mountainous evaluation loop, we observed 16 mpg.
- Infotainment: The Lexus Interface infotainment system is simple to use, and Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
- Safety package: A long list of driver-assistance systems is standard on the 2026 Lexus GX, most bundled together in the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 (LSS+ 3.0) package.
Which Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2026 Lexus GX offers these trims:
- Premium: This entry trim gives you the GX’s core luxury-and-capability formula, including the standard digital driver display, touchscreen infotainment, and the model’s strong powertrain.
- Premium+: This trim adds extra comfort and convenience equipment over Premium, making it a smart step up if you want more everyday polish.
- Luxury: This trim leans further into upscale features and is a good fit if you want a more premium cabin experience.
- Luxury+: This version adds even more equipment on top of Luxury for shoppers who want the most comfort-focused setup.
- Overtrail: This is the best-value trim for buyers who want the GX’s rugged side, with rock rails, all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, crawl control, downhill assist control, and trail-ready hardware.
- Overtrail+: This trim builds on Overtrail with additional equipment for buyers who want the most trail-focused GX with extra luxury touches.
What Lexus GX do most buyers choose?
The Lexus GX years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,338 | 35.9% |
| 2023 | 1,290 | 35.8% |
| 2022 | 1,165 | 34.9% |
| 2025 | 894 | 35.1% |
| 2020 | 759 | 36.6% |
| 2021 | 742 | 36.5% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare and a strong mix of newer features and used-car pricing. They also sit close to the model’s redesign, which makes them especially appealing to shoppers who want modern GX styling and equipment.

The 2014 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2014, 2021, and 2019 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Customers say
The Lexus GX is a well-loved luxury SUV known for its impressive off-road capabilities, robust construction, and luxurious interior. Most owners appreciate its comfort and reliability, especially on long drives. The V8 engine is favored for its power, providing a smooth and confident drive. However, many drivers express concern about its fuel economy and find the technology outdated compared to newer competitors. Overall, the GX stands out for its rugged yet refined feel, making it a top choice for families and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Reviewed a 2010 Lexus GX on Oct 22, 2025
The 2010 Lexus GX is generally a great SUV with a V8 engine shared with the Lexus LS460. Although it looks like a rugged heavy duty SUV, the weight of it tends to cause it to wear down its components like the suspension and engine. Trouble issues tend to be oil leaks from numerous places like the valve covers and cam towers. Additional issues include the dreaded coolant leak of the valley pan gasket and radiator. If you drive a used one, if you smell a sweet odor emanating from the engine, it's probably one of those aforementioned leaks of coolant. Should you buy one? Yes, with the caveat that most if not all aspects of the engine, coolant and suspension have been addressed. Also check CarFax websites for services performed and NHTSA for known issues reported.

Good reliable features. Yes for the price it’s a good value since it’s a Toyota. It’s missing a backup camera and Bluetooth. I’d compare it to the 4Runner.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Lexus GX stands out because it blends old-school toughness with luxury SUV comfort. Even after a facelift, it remains one of the most dated luxury SUVs on the market, but that age also helps explain why it is so capable. For buyers who value off-road ability and a comfortable cabin more than the latest trends, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
Lexus updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it more memorable, but the vehicle still carries an unmistakably traditional character. That makes it different from many modern luxury SUVs, which often prioritize broad on-road polish over specialization. The GX’s strengths are clear: it is capable off-road and comfortable, and owners also tend to praise its robust build, luxurious interior, ride quality, and reliability.
The tradeoff is that the 2020 Lexus GX is not the most modern choice. Its technology is outdated, its styling is uninspired, and some owners are disappointed by its poor gas mileage. Even so, for shoppers who want a luxury SUV with real off-road credibility, the GX remains distinctive.
