With a Jaguar engine, BMW transmission and Ford electronics this is a serious "best of breed" Land Rover. It's the most reliable vehicle I have ever own which is ironic given my father's woes with english cars as a kid. 475 HP matched with such offroad prowess is rare for a 7 passenger family machine. With it's refined and elegant utilitarian design it provides a ride that is both ultra quiet and silky smooth. It's very un Land Rover-like while still screaming utility with it's softened boxy design. I love the fact that such a heavy vehicle that can drive thru rivers still can do 0-60 in 7+ seconds. All of this in a vehicle? What's the catch? Yes fuel economy is the obvious answer but really it's the small gas tank. The 3rd row of seats was a likely design tradeoff vs. a bigger fuel tank which makes it's cruising distance on a tank 280 miles at best. One of my favorite things is the handling on curvy roads. For such a deceivingly top heavy SUV it handles turns with ease, stability and agility due to the bulk of the curb weight being low to the ground.

The LR4 (or Discovery 4 in international markets) is a nice improvement over the LR3 it replaced, with a lot of updated features, a better interior and cleaner/more modern styling, its a nice improvement over its predecessor in many ways. Its comfortable and highly refined in the city and on the highway, it has excellent outward visibility and plenty of power for passing and cruising. It is also highly capable off-road and excellent for towing. Its downsides are that the 5.0 V8 that replaced the 4.4 from the previous vehicle is less reliable and its not uncommon to have to do a timing chain job within the first 100k of its life. Its also thirstier than the outgoing engine (slightly) and LR recommends premium fuel, so it can be a very expensive vehicle to operate. Overall I highly recommend this vehicle to Land Rover enthusiasts and anyone else who is looking for a highly capable SUV, demands a premium feel, and can afford the higher maintenance costs and fuel consumption of this type of vehicle.

Overview
About the Land Rover LR4
The Land Rover LR4 is the name for the United States-market fourth-generation Land Rover Discovery, which was produced for model years 2010 to 2016. It was effectively an updated version of the Land Rover LR3, incorporating styling features from newer Land Rover models into the body shell of that vehicle.
What are the advantages of the Land Rover LR4?
- Excellent off-road capability
- Standard all-wheel drive
- Comfortable
What is the best Land Rover LR4 model year?
Considering the age of the LR4, it’s best to look for one from its final model year, 2016. Examples from previous model years are coming up on a decade old or more, with all of the mileage and wear and tear that entails.
What are the disadvantages of the Land Rover LR4?
- Sluggish performance
- Poor handling
- Poor fuel economy
Comparison: Is the Land Rover Discovery better than the Land Rover Range Rover Sport?
The LR4 and first-generation Range Rover Sport share underpinnings, but the Range Rover Sport has sleeker styling and is tuned for better on-road performance. The LR4 is the more practical option, with more interior space and available third-row seating.
Is the Land Rover LR4 a reliable car?
Any old Land Rover is going to be a bit of a gamble when it comes to reliability. However, it’s possible to minimize surprises by ensuring any potential purchase has a full service history.
Is the Land Rover LR4 worth the cost?
Maintenance and fuel costs are likely to be higher than more conventional SUVs, so an LR4 is really only worth it for fans of the Land Rover brand, or those who want to go off-roading in a vehicle with some creature comforts.
