Are Jeep Cherokee models reliable?

What should I look for when buying a used Jeep Cherokee?

Across all model years, at 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and Active Driving Assist.
• Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.
• Fuel efficiency: 37 mpg combined (39 mpg city, 35 mpg highway).

Which Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee offers these trims:

• Base: The entry model includes the standard hybrid powertrain, standard all-wheel drive, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and standard driver-assistance features. It is the best-value starting point if you want the Cherokee’s core tech and capability.
• Laredo: Adds more equipment over the base model and starts at a higher price point, making it a step up for shoppers who want a more upscale feature mix without going to the top of the range.
• Limited: Adds leatherette seats, wireless device charging, and more convenience content, making it a strong choice if you want a more premium-feeling cabin.
• Overland: Adds 20-inch wheels, traffic-sign recognition, a surround-view camera system, and the most upscale trim content in the lineup.

What Jeep Cherokee do most buyers choose?

The Jeep Cherokee years with the most listings are 2020, 2019, and 2018.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, mileage, and price combination. They also sit in the middle of the Cherokee’s third-generation run, where feature content and pricing often line up well for used shoppers.

What is the Jeep Cherokee's resale value?

Most Cherokee model years are down year over year, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. The table shows especially sharp declines in several recent and mid-cycle years, while one newer year is essentially flat.

The 2023 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.

The 2023, 2017, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Jeep Cherokee safe?

• 2026: 7/10
• 2021: 7/10
• 2016: 6/10
• 2014: 8/10

Jeep offers standard driver-assistance features including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and Active Driving Assist.

For the safest used buy, the 2014 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.

Should I buy a used Jeep Cherokee now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2022 model is at −10.41% versus a year ago, and the 2021 model is at −10.2%.
• Deal availability: The 2021 model has 34.4% good and great deals.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2020 model has the most listings at a current average price of $16,339. The Jeep Cherokee offers a distinctive mix of utility, character, and everyday usability that has helped it stand out across generations.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The new Cherokee’s specs don’t seem very Jeep-like at first. The only powertrain available at launch consists of a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine connected to a two-motor hybrid system with a planetary gearset taking the place of a conventional transmission, and it’s good for 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque.
• Tech: The 2026 Cherokee comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain standard.
• Safety: Jeep offers similar standard driver-assistance features to other mainstream brands, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and Active Driving Assist.
• Starting price: Pricing starts at $36,995 for the base model.

If you're buying used today, the 2020 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
