What should I look for when buying a used Honda Civic?
Across all model years, at 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 88.1% |
| 2025 | 86.6% |
| 2024 | 84.5% |
| 2023 | 80.8% |
| 2022 | 72% |
| 2021 | 60.5% |
| 2020 | 53.3% |
| 2019 | 50.9% |
| 2018 | 47.1% |
| 2017 | 45.7% |
| 2016 | 46.9% |
| 2015 | 48.9% |
| 2014 | 49.2% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2023 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Honda Sensing collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS)
- Infotainment: standard 7-inch digital instrumentation panel and 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Fuel efficiency: The Civic’s EPA fuel economy ratings are respectable at 31 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the highway, and 34 mpg in combined driving.
Which Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2026 Honda Civic offers these trims:
- LX: The entry trim uses the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 150 horsepower and 133 lb-ft of torque, plus a CVT and front-wheel drive; it suits shoppers who want the Civic’s core formula at the lowest price.
- Sport: Adds 18-inch wheels, a more distinctive look, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, making it the best-value trim for many buyers.
- Sport Hybrid: Brings Honda’s Two Motor Hybrid powertrain for stronger efficiency and more power, making it the smart pick if you want the Civic’s efficiency-focused side.
- Sport Touring Hybrid: Adds larger 10.2-inch instrumentation and 9-inch infotainment displays, Google built-in, Alexa built-in, wireless smartphone charging, and front and rear parking sensors with low-speed automatic braking.
- Si: A standalone sport sedan with a turbocharged gas engine and manual transmission only, aimed at drivers who want a more engaging setup.
- Type R: The performance-focused hatchback variant, for shoppers who want the most extreme Civic in the lineup.
What Honda Civic do most buyers choose?
The Honda Civic years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 5,893 | 35.9% |
| 2025 | 5,714 | 36.1% |
| 2023 | 4,949 | 34.4% |
| 2019 | 3,037 | 31.8% |
| 2026 | 3,001 | 36.8% |
| 2021 | 2,787 | 31.6% |
Those higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a broad mix of availability, pricing, and deal opportunities. When more listings are on the market, you usually have more room to compare condition, mileage, and equipment before you buy.
What is the Honda Civic's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | $18,684 | −5.56% |
| 2019 | $17,392 | −4.74% |
| 2022 | $22,176 | −4.44% |
| 2021 | $19,218 | −3.64% |
| 2025 | $25,310 | −3.34% |
| 2018 | $16,090 | −2.92% |
| 2017 | $15,107 | −2.28% |
| 2023 | $24,019 | −1.39% |
| 2024 | $25,026 | −0.9% |
| 2016 | $13,824 | −0.88% |
| 2014 | $11,087 | −0.13% |
| 2015 | $12,306 | +2.57% |
Most model years in the table are moving lower year over year, which is helpful if you’re shopping used. A few years are close to flat, and one year is rising, so the Civic’s pricing picture is mixed rather than uniform. Overall, the pattern still favors buyers who want to wait for a softer entry point.
The 2014, 2016, and 2024 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2015, 2014, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −3.34% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −0.9%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 36.1% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 35.9%.

Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Five Civic sedans are available, and the Hybrids use Honda’s excellent Two Motor Hybrid powertrain, offering remarkable power and impressive efficiency.
- Tech: You can get larger 10.2-inch instrumentation and 9-inch infotainment displays, Google built-in, Alexa built-in, access to a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless smartphone charging, and more.
- Safety: Honda equips every 2026 Civic with its Honda Sensing collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), and the Civic Sport has blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Starting price: For the 2026 model year, prices range from $25,790 to $34,690 with the $1,195 destination charge.

Customers say
The Honda Civic has consistently garnered positive feedback from owners across its various model years, praised for its reliability, impressive fuel economy, and enjoyable driving experience. Shoppers appreciate the comfortable interiors and ample cargo space, making it a preferred choice among many families and first-time car buyers. However, some drivers have expressed concerns over the lack of certain modern features and the need for more power in acceleration across different models. Overall, the Honda Civic remains a solid choice for a dependable and fun-to-drive compact car.

I think this car offers a lot of value for the money. It comes with a strong set of features that make it comfortable, practical, and enjoyable to drive. The design looks modern, and it has many of the technology and safety features that most drivers are looking for today. One of the biggest strengths of this car is its balance between performance, comfort, and affordability. It feels like you get a lot without having to move into a much higher price range. While no vehicle is perfect, this car does a great job meeting the needs of most drivers. The overall package is competitive and well-rounded, making it a smart choice for someone looking for reliability, style, and everyday usability. Compared with other vehicles in its class, this car stands out as a strong contender and is definitely worth considering. It offers an attractive combination of features, value, and driving experience that makes it easy to recommend.

Car was super clean, better than what the pictures showed. Features are good and it was very low mileage. If I have to add something to the car, it would be the back up sensors and blind spot sensors. Other than that it was a great purchase

CarGurus recommends the 2023 Honda Civic
Summary
With 4,974 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,043, 33.6% of 2023 Honda Civic listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Honda Civic 4.88 / 5 stars.
80.8% of 2023 Honda Civic listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Honda Civic stands out as a compact car that feels more refined and upscale than its predecessor, while still keeping the Civic formula intact. It offers strong engine choices and updated technology, and its interior is a clear highlight thanks to the honeycomb mesh panel that conceals the HVAC vents and the better materials throughout. For shoppers who want a small car that is practical but not plain, that combination gives the Civic a more polished personality than many rivals.
What makes the 2023 model especially appealing is how broad its lineup is. The sedan and hatchback both remain available, and the hatchback adds real utility through its liftback design and flat-folding rear seats. Standard equipment on non-hybrid models includes Apple CarPlay and Honda Sensing, along with a 7-inch infotainment screen, LED headlights and taillights, push-button start, and automatic climate control. The Civic also has a strong safety record, with every model in this generation earning some form of Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The 2023 Civic is not the most affordable compact car, and some of its best features are reserved for higher trims. Owner feedback also suggests that comfort and fuel efficiency are major strengths, but some shoppers may be disappointed by the absence of features such as blind spot monitoring on certain versions. Even so, the 2023 Honda Civic remains distinctive because it blends everyday usability, good driving manners, and a more premium feel than many buyers expect from a compact car.
