What should I look for when buying a used BMW i3?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 78.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2021 | 77.8% |

| 2019 | 80.6% |
| 2018 | 84.8% |
| 2017 | 84.3% |
| 2016 | 78.9% |
| 2015 | 76% |
| 2014 | 75.7% |
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Antilock brakes and child seat safety latches are standard across all versions.
- Infotainment: BMW’s iDrive system with an optional 10.2-inch high-definition screen and real-time traffic info.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA has given the i3 a rating of 117 mpge on electricity alone, and 39 mpg when using the range extender, which runs on premium fuel.
Which BMW i3 trim should I buy?
The 2015 BMW i3 offers these trims:
- Mega: This entry trim brings 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric, making it the most straightforward way into the i3’s distinctive cabin.
- Giga: This trim adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash, and it stands out as a strong value if you want a more upscale feel.
- Tera: This top trim adds a leather dash and hand-stitched accents for the most premium interior presentation.
What BMW i3 do most buyers choose?
The BMW i3 years with the most listings are 2015, 2014, and 2016.

| 2014 | 74 | 13.5% |
| 2016 | 71 | 16.9% |
| 2017 | 51 | 23.5% |
| 2018 | 46 | 23.9% |
| 2019 | 36 | 19.4% |

Is the BMW i3 safe?
- 2015: 6/10
- 2014: 6/10
For the safest used buy, the 2014 and 2015 models both post the highest confirmed score of 6/10.
Should I buy a used BMW i3 now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Sweet-spot year: The 2015 model has the most listings. The BMW i3 offers a distinctive, tech-forward driving character that makes it stand out in the used EV market.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The i3 is motivated by a 170-hp, all-electric powertrain that sends power to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission, and the optional engine acts only as a generator while the EPA has given the i3 a rating of 117 mpge on electricity alone, and 39 mpg when using the range extender, which runs on premium fuel.
- Tech: The car’s visible tech includes BMW’s iDrive system and an optional 10.2-inch high-definition screen, and it can also be fitted with an optional Parking Assistance Package and a Technology + Driving Assistance Package that adds the high-def screen and real-time traffic info.
- Safety: According to the manufacturer, the i3 uses a LifeDrive construction to compartmentalize and protect the passenger cabin in a crash, with carbon fiber composites used to reinforce collision areas and front- and side-impact airbags.
- Starting price: Starting at $42,400, or $46,250 with the range extender, before federal and applicable state incentives, the BMW i3 is considerably more expensive than other electric cars in its class.
If you're buying used today, the 2015 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Owners appreciate its efficiency for city commuting, with some models even boasting impressive battery ranges. However, several drivers express concerns about the limited range, particularly for longer trips, and the high price compared to other electric vehicles. While the i3 excels in maneuverability and provides a roomy interior, issues with tire choices and comfort have also been noted.

It has nearly all the features I am looking for but two. I would like the bigger battery pack and I do not think the Rex system is needed for my use case.

Great car for graceful people who don't have to travel very far on a single charge. I knocked heads with the passenger as we buckled up (I'm under 5' tall, so this was a width/coordination problem). The backseat is incredibly small with no windows, which was a no-go for my kid. The car was adorable and super fun to drive, though. If I were single and childless I would have bought it.

CarGurus recommends the 2014 BMW i3

Summary
With 73 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,585, 12.3% of 2014 BMW i3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 BMW i3 3.57 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
74.0% of 2014 i3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 BMW i3 stands out because it takes a familiar car layout and changes just enough to feel completely different. It still has four wheels at the corners, steering up front, doors on the sides, and seats in the middle, but BMW’s unusual approach gives it a revolutionary design and a driving experience that feels unlike most other vehicles on the road. That distinctiveness is part of its appeal: it is a car for buyers who want something genuinely different rather than a conventional compact EV.
At the same time, the i3’s appeal comes with a tradeoff. BMW’s own description points to “pricy efficiency,” which captures the car’s unusual mix of innovation and cost. Owner feedback also reflects that balance, with praise for its fun driving experience, comfort, and futuristic design, alongside complaints about battery range and interior material quality. For city use, it can be an appealing and memorable choice, but it may be less convincing for drivers who need longer-range practicality.
These recommendations are based on CarGurus' proprietary market data from September 14, 2026, CarGurus experts' opinions, and generative AI.
