Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Driving Assistance Professional Package
- Infotainment: iDrive 8.5 infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA rating is 19 mpg, and we saw between 16.4 mpg and 21.1 mpg in different conditions. BMW does offer more fuel-efficient options, including the sDrive40i and xDrive40i rated at 25 mpg combined, and the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, with 38 miles of electric range.
Which BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2026 BMW X5 offers these trims:
- sDrive40i: Rear-wheel drive, with the X5’s core luxury-SUV character and the broadest entry point into the lineup.
- xDrive40i: Adds all-wheel drive for buyers who want the same six-cylinder formula with AWD traction.
- xDrive50e: The plug-in hybrid choice, adding AWD and 38 miles of electric range; this is the best-value trim if you want efficiency and capability together.
- M60i: The performance-focused V8 trim, adding 532 horsepower, 553 pound-feet of torque, M Adaptive suspension, M Sport brakes, and performance tires.
- X5 M Competition: The top performance model in the lineup, for buyers who want the most aggressive hardware and the highest-output X5 experience.
What BMW X5 do most buyers choose?
The BMW X5 years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 5,100 | 36.1% |
| 2023 | 3,540 | 39.3% |
| 2024 | 3,461 | 39.4% |
| 2026 | 3,382 | 34.7% |
| 2027 | 2,566 | 33% |
| 2022 | 2,546 | 39.7% |
Higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right color, mileage, and equipment mix. They also often sit in the sweet spot between newer features and used-car pricing.
What is the BMW X5's resale value?

| 2024 | $52,338 | −7.87% |
| 2026 | $71,350 | −5.98% |
Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it creates more room for value. The newer models are also declining, but at a smaller pace than many older years in the table. Overall, the pattern favors buyers who want a luxury SUV with meaningful price movement from one year to the next.
The 2026, 2024, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $59,820. The BMW X5 offers a roomy cabin, strong visibility, and generous cargo space.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: BMW offers a variety of six-cylinder and eight-cylinder powertrains in the X5. Our M60i test car was equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, accelerating to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, according to BMW. That speed is courtesy of 532 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, and thanks to the standard xDrive AWD and the test model’s 22-inch wheels and staggered-width Pirelli P Zero performance tires, it gets to the ground without any drama.
- Tech: The X5’s BMW Curved Display contains a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen under a single, sweeping piece of glass. The iDrive 8.5 infotainment system is well stocked with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and a cloud-based navigation system.
- Safety: The 2026 BMW X5 comes standard with high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limit assistant, a driver monitoring system, a collision preparation system, post-collision braking, and parking sensors in the front, to the side, and at the rear.
- Starting price: The BMW X5 lineup includes prices ranging from $69,750 to $132,450, including the destination charge.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

One of the best vehicles I have ever owned. From the older BMWs to the newer Cadillacs. Technology is outstanding. There are things I haven’t even done yet. Great investment.

I think this car is way too overpriced for the features and the condition. Considering it has almost 90k miles, and with the base packaging, this should be somewhere around 16-18k at the dealership assuming no technical or mechanical issues observed with the car. Almost 21k is crazy. The car does not have: M package Premium plus package, whatever that was called that gives you multi controllable seats, shade screens on the back 360 camera and all the other good stuff. The car seemed factory base model, with no features. So 21k is way too expensive.

Why it stands out
The 2025 BMW X5 remains a core part of BMW’s lineup and continues to stand out as the brand’s midsize luxury SUV. It sits between the X3 and X7, and alongside the coupe-like X6, in a crowded segment. Following a substantial update for the 2024 model year, the 2025 X5 celebrates its 25th anniversary with a limited-edition model, but receives no other changes.
What makes the 2025 BMW X5 appealing is its blend of multiple powertrain options, great handling, and a comfortable ride. Those strengths help explain its longevity, even if its value is weaker than rivals and advanced safety features are not standard.
