Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns an 7.33/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

The 2026 E-Class stands out for keeping the wagon body style alive while also offering sedan and wagon choices in the lineup. It also adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner that can authenticate saved driver profiles, giving the cabin a more personalized feel. For buyers who want something beyond the usual luxury sedan formula, that mix of practicality and technology is a major part of its appeal.

The biggest news is the debut of the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, which combines plug-in hybrid efficiency with AMG-engineered performance. It can provide electric-only propulsion for short trips while still using a gasoline engine for longer drives, and it is described as fun to drive with impressive technology.

Trade-offs matter here, though: the brakes can be squealing and grabby, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is presented as a polished, tech-forward luxury car with a strong emphasis on comfort, space, and advanced features. The expert notes describe the current generation as the most technologically advanced version yet, with a cabin that feels distinctive and well appointed.

On the performance side, the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon pairs a turbocharged inline-six with an electric motor and battery, and the test notes describe the powertrain as delivering strong real-world performance with electric-only driving for short trips and gasoline power for longer drives. That kind of setup suggests a sophisticated system, but also one that is more complex than a conventional gas-only layout.

The cost-effectiveness notes also point to meaningful efficiency advantages versus rival performance wagons, which can help reduce day-to-day operating burden. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that this is a highly complex luxury performance vehicle, so you should expect maintenance and repair exposure to be higher than on a simpler car.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a performance-oriented wagon with hybrid hardware and advanced electronics. Focus on brake feel, cabin condition, and whether the tech features operate cleanly and consistently, since the test notes call out both hardware complexity and some usability quirks.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The E 450 All-Terrain is the less-expensive wagon and brings a more rugged look plus technology that can assist with light off-road travel. The AMG E 53 Hybrid is the performance upgrade, with a more aggressive road-focused setup, standard Airmatic air suspension, and available upscale packages that can push the price much higher.
• Powertrain: The AMG E 53 Hybrid uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, a 120-kilowatt electric motor, and a 21.2-kilowatt-hour battery. It is rated at 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and Pre-Safe collision preparation for rear and side impacts. Advanced safety features are not standard.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the available Superscreen package adds a 12.3-inch passenger touchscreen plus an interior selfie and video camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon is rated at 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode. Mercedes says it can recharge from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes on a DC fast charger.

Which 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: E 350 Sedan, E 450 Sedan, E 450 All-Terrain Wagon, AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• E 350 Sedan: This is the entry point if you want the E-Class experience at the lowest price, but the available information here focuses more on the higher-output and wagon variants, so you should expect the simplest setup in the lineup.
• E 450 Sedan: This is the step-up sedan choice if you want more power and a more upscale feel than the E 350 without moving into AMG territory.
• E 450 All-Terrain Wagon: This is the best fit if you want the wagon body style with a more rugged look and light off-road capability. It is also the less-expensive wagon in the lineup.
• AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan: This is the performance pick if you want the strongest blend of speed, technology, and efficiency. It is the most compelling choice for buyers who want something distinctive and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you should look for a car equipped with the Driver Assistance Package if those systems matter to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile examples.

• Deal availability: 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 670 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 96.4% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class does not have published crash-test ratings from NHTSA or IIHS yet.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The E-Class comes standard with Pre-Safe forward-collision preparation, Pre-Safe Sound, SOS emergency call service, high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system.

The optional Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and Pre-Safe collision preparation for rear and side impacts. The main caveat is that these advanced safety features are not standard.

Should I buy a 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 model adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner and debuts the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, giving you a more distinctive mix of practicality and performance.

The bottom line: If you want the most interesting version of this generation, the 2026 is the one to target because it adds the wagon-focused practicality and the AMG E 53 Hybrid’s plug-in performance. If you are more price-sensitive, you can still shop the market carefully and focus on the better-priced listings, especially if you do not need the newest tech or the AMG-specific hardware.
