Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns an 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

That lines up with what you get here: a wagon-friendly lineup, a standard biometric fingerprint scanner for saved driver profiles, and an AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon that brings plug-in hybrid efficiency together with AMG-engineered performance. It’s especially appealing if you want something more practical and more distinctive than the usual luxury sedan formula.

The trade-offs are real, though. The brakes can be squealing and grabby, the back seat is cramped, and advanced safety features are not standard.

With 32.1% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop carefully.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is presented as a polished, tech-forward luxury car with a strong emphasis on comfort, materials, and advanced systems. The expert notes describe the cabin as high-quality and the technology as impressive, while the performance notes point to a sophisticated plug-in hybrid setup with a turbocharged inline-six, electric motor, and battery pack.

The performance coverage also suggests the powertrain is well sorted in real-world use, with electric-only driving for short trips, hybrid operation for longer drives, and strong efficiency when you keep the battery charged. The cost-effectiveness notes add that the AMG E 53 Hybrid offers more electric range than the BMW M5 Touring’s plug-in hybrid powertrain.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that this is a complex, high-performance luxury wagon with advanced hardware, so you should expect maintenance and repair costs to track with that complexity.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with this much technology and performance hardware. Focus on how the brakes feel in normal driving, whether the cabin electronics work cleanly, and whether the car shows signs of heavy use or neglected upkeep.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The E 450 All-Terrain is the less-expensive wagon, while the AMG E 53 Hybrid is the performance upgrade with a more aggressive road-focused character. The base AMG E 53 Hybrid comes with MB-Tex artificial leather, natural grain wood trim, a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, while the test car’s Pinnacle trim and option packages added more luxury and tech. The base setup is already well equipped, but the more expensive versions add the richer presentation and extra features that make this car feel special.
• Powertrain: The AMG E 53 Hybrid Wagon uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, a 120-kilowatt electric motor, and a 21.2-kilowatt-hour battery. It delivers 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, with 604 hp available with Race Start active. It can travel 41 miles on electric power, is rated at 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode, and can recharge from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes on a DC fast charger.
• Safety package: The standard setup includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system. Pre-Safe forward-collision preparation, Pre-Safe Sound, and SOS emergency call service are also standard. The Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and rear- and side-impact Pre-Safe preparation.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with augmented reality navigation and Burmester 4D surround sound with Dolby Atmos. The Superscreen package adds a 12.3-inch passenger touchscreen and an interior camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The AMG E 53 Hybrid Wagon is rated at 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode. In testing, it averaged 47.4 mpg over the first 250 miles when frequently recharged, and 22.9 mpg when running on gasoline alone.

Which 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: E 350 Sedan, E 450 Sedan, E 450 All-Terrain Wagon, AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• E 350 Sedan: This is the entry point if you want the E-Class experience without chasing performance extras. It suits buyers who care most about the core luxury-car formula and want the least expensive way into the lineup.
• E 450 Sedan: This is the stronger all-around choice if you want more power and a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to AMG pricing. It should be the best-value pick for most shoppers who want a balanced luxury sedan.
• E 450 All-Terrain Wagon: Choose this if you want the wagon body style and a more rugged look with technology that can assist with light off-road travel. It’s the practical pick for buyers who want utility and a distinctive shape.
• AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan: This is the performance-focused choice for buyers who want the most power and the most AMG character in sedan form. It’s the right fit if driving enjoyment matters more than keeping costs down.

The safety package note is simple: advanced safety features are not standard, so you should look closely at whether a given car has the Driver Assistance Package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.

• Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 641 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 96.6% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety setup includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system. Pre-Safe forward-collision preparation, Pre-Safe Sound, and SOS emergency call service are also standard.

The Driver Assistance Package adds 16 additional systems, including adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and rear- and side-impact Pre-Safe preparation.

One important caveat: advanced safety features are not standard, so you’ll want to verify whether a used example has the package you want.

Should I buy a 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The debut of the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon gives you plug-in hybrid efficiency, AMG-engineered performance, and a wagon body style that stands out from the usual luxury-sedan crowd.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive and most interesting version of this generation, the 2026 is the one to target, especially if the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon is on your shortlist. If you’re more price-sensitive, you can still shop the broader E-Class lineup carefully and focus on the trim and equipment mix that best matches your needs.
