Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns an 7.3/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

It stands out for keeping the wagon body style alive while also offering sedan and wagon choices in the lineup, and it adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner that can authenticate saved driver profiles. That makes it a strong fit if you want something beyond the usual luxury sedan formula, especially if you value practicality and technology in the same package.

The trade-offs are real: the brakes can be squealing and grabby, the back seat is cramped, and advanced safety features are not standard. Even so, the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon brings plug-in hybrid efficiency and AMG-engineered performance, which broadens the appeal for buyers who want a luxury car that feels different from the norm.

Good and great deals account for 31.7% of listings, which suggests there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is presented as a polished, tech-forward luxury car with a strong emphasis on comfort, space, and a refined overall feel. The current generation is described as the most technologically advanced version yet, and the cabin materials, seats, and legroom are highlighted as major strengths.

On the performance side, the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon pairs a turbocharged inline-six with an electric motor and battery, and the notes describe it as a compelling real-world performance car with impressive efficiency for its class. The powertrain also supports electric-only driving for short trips and gasoline power for longer drives, which adds flexibility for daily use.

For maintenance, the test notes mention that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that this is a complex, highly equipped luxury model, so you should expect higher stakes if prior care was inconsistent.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with advanced electronics and available performance hardware. Focus on how the cabin systems, brakes, and driver-assistance features operate in real use, and pay close attention to wear on the interior surfaces and any signs that the car has been used hard.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The E 450 All-Terrain is the less-expensive wagon and adds a more rugged look plus technology that can assist with light off-road travel, while the AMG E 53 Hybrid is the performance upgrade with a more road-focused setup. The standard cabin includes MB-Tex upholstery, a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, while the test vehicle’s higher-spec packages added features such as the Superscreen and premium leather.
• Powertrain: The AMG E 53 Hybrid uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, a 120-kilowatt electric motor, and a 21.2-kilowatt-hour battery. It is rated at 577 hp and 553 lb-ft, can reach 60 mph in as little as 3.8 seconds, and returns an EPA-rated 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and Pre-Safe collision preparation for rear and side impacts. The standard car already includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, augmented reality navigation, music streaming, and a Burmester 4D surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos technology. The optional Superscreen package adds a 12.3-inch passenger touchscreen and an interior selfie and video camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The AMG E 53 Hybrid is rated at 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode. In testing, it averaged 47.4 mpg over the first 250 miles when regularly recharged, with 52% of miles traveled on electricity.

Which 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: E 350 Sedan, E 450 Sedan, E 450 All-Terrain Wagon, AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• E 350 Sedan: This is the entry point if you want the E-Class experience with the least complexity, and it makes sense if you care more about the model’s core luxury and tech than about extra performance or wagon utility.
• E 450 Sedan: This is the better all-around choice if you want more power and a more upscale feel without jumping to the AMG model, making it the most balanced pick for many shoppers.
• E 450 All-Terrain Wagon: Choose this if you want the wagon body style and a more rugged look, plus the added light off-road travel capability noted in the review.
• AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan: This is the enthusiast pick, with the strongest performance character and the most advanced powertrain in the lineup; it suits you best if driving enjoyment matters more than simplicity.

The safety package note is important here: advanced safety features are not standard, so you should look closely at whether a given car has the Driver Assistance Package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a flood of bargain-bin pricing.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 663 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 96.2% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class does not have published NHTSA or IIHS safety ratings in the available data.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, semi-autonomous self-parking, Pre-Safe forward-collision preparation, Pre-Safe Sound, and SOS emergency call service. The optional Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and rear- and side-impact Pre-Safe preparation.

A key caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should verify whether a used example has the package you want.

Should I buy a 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner and brings the debut of the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, which combines plug-in hybrid efficiency with AMG-engineered performance.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version with the wagon body style, the fingerprint scanner, and the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon’s mix of efficiency and performance, the 2026 is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, you may want to keep an eye on nearby model years and focus on the best-equipped example rather than the newest badge.
