Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns an 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

For you, the appeal depends on what you want from a luxury car: the lineup keeps the wagon body style alive, adds sedan and wagon choices, and brings a standard biometric fingerprint scanner that can authenticate saved driver profiles. The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon is the standout if you want something more unusual than the typical luxury sedan formula, with plug-in hybrid efficiency, AMG-engineered performance, and real utility.

The trade-offs are real, though. The brakes can be squealing and grabby, the back seat is cramped, and advanced safety features are not standard.

With 34.2% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is presented as a polished, tech-forward luxury car, and the expert notes emphasize that its systems behave in a refined and sophisticated manner. The performance notes also point to a powertrain that can deliver electric-only driving for short trips while still relying on a gasoline engine for longer drives, which gives you flexibility in day-to-day use.

The cost-effectiveness notes also frame the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon as a bargain relative to its closest performance-wagon rivals, with strong efficiency and more electric range than the BMW’s plug-in hybrid setup. That said, long-term ownership risk for used buyers will depend heavily on how well the complex hybrid and performance hardware has been maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with this much technology and performance hardware. Focus on brake feel, cabin condition, and whether the advanced driver-assistance and infotainment features operate as intended. If you’re looking at an AMG E 53 Hybrid, pay extra attention to charging behavior, hybrid operation, and any signs that the performance hardware has been driven hard.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the E 450 All-Terrain wagon and the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon. The All-Terrain has a more rugged look and technology that can assist with light off-road travel, while the AMG E 53 Hybrid is the performance upgrade with a lower, road-focused character. The AMG wagon also comes with premium materials and available packages that add more luxury and tech, but the base setup already includes MB-Tex upholstery, natural grain wood trim, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen.
• Powertrain: The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six paired with a 120-kilowatt electric motor and a 21.2-kilowatt-hour battery. Total output is 577 hp and 553 lb-ft, with 604 hp available with Race Start active. It is rated for 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
• Safety package: The standard safety equipment includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system. The Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and Pre-Safe collision preparation for rear and side impacts.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with augmented reality navigation, music streaming, and a Burmester 4D surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos technology. The optional Superscreen package adds a 12.3-inch passenger touchscreen and an interior camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon is rated at 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode. In testing, it averaged 47.4 mpg over the first 250 miles when regularly recharged, with 52% of miles traveled on electricity.

Which 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: E 350 Sedan, E 450 Sedan, E 450 All-Terrain Wagon, AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• E 350 Sedan: This is the entry point if you want the E-Class experience with the least complexity. It suits you if you care more about the core luxury-car formula than about extra performance or wagon utility.
• E 450 Sedan: This is the better choice if you want more power and a more upscale feel without stepping all the way into AMG territory. It should be the best fit for most buyers who want a balanced luxury sedan.
• E 450 All-Terrain Wagon: Choose this if you want the wagon body style and a more rugged look, plus technology that can assist with light off-road travel. It is the practical pick if utility matters more than outright speed.
• AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan: This is the performance choice, with the strongest powertrain character and the most enthusiast appeal. It suits you if you want a fast, tech-rich luxury sedan and are willing to pay for the AMG experience.

The safety package note is simple: advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you should look closely at whether a used example has the Driver Assistance Package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile examples.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 643 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 97.0% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class does not have published NHTSA or IIHS ratings in the available data.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety equipment includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system. It also comes with Pre-Safe forward-collision preparation technology, Pre-Safe Sound, and SOS emergency call service.

If you want the most comprehensive driver-assistance setup, the optional Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and rear- and side-impact Pre-Safe preparation. The main caveat is that these advanced features are not standard.

Should I buy a 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner and brings the debut of the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, which combines plug-in hybrid efficiency with AMG-engineered performance.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version of this generation with the wagon body style, the fingerprint scanner, and the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon’s mix of efficiency and performance, the 2026 is the one to target. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth considering, especially if you can find a cleaner example with the equipment you want at a lower asking price.
