Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns an 7.3/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

It stands out for keeping the wagon body style alive while also offering sedan and wagon choices in the lineup, and it adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner that can authenticate saved driver profiles. That makes it a strong fit if you want a luxury car that feels more practical and more personalized than the usual sedan formula.

The trade-offs are real: the brakes can be squealing and grabby, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon brings plug-in hybrid efficiency and AMG-engineered performance, which broadens the appeal if you want something uncommon and genuinely quick.

With 34.2% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have a moderate amount of market leverage.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is presented as a polished, tech-forward luxury car with a strong emphasis on comfort, space, and a refined overall feel. Its expert notes also point to a plug-in hybrid setup that can handle short trips on electric power and longer drives with the gasoline engine, which suggests a well-rounded powertrain for everyday use.

The performance notes describe the wagon as capable of strong real-world pace, with a ride that stays composed even when the road gets rough. The cost-effectiveness notes also frame it as a bargain compared with key performance-wagon rivals, which helps support the case for long-term ownership value if you want efficiency and utility in one package.

If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that this is still a complex luxury vehicle with advanced hardware, so you should expect ownership costs and maintenance complexity to matter more than they would on a simpler car.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with performance hardware and a lot of electronic equipment. Focus on how the cabin electronics, braking behavior, and suspension feel in real driving, since those are the areas where this E-Class has the most personality and the most complexity.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The E 450 All-Terrain is the less-expensive wagon, while the AMG E 53 Hybrid is the performance upgrade with a more aggressive setup for paved-road driving. The base car’s standard MB-Tex upholstery, 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, and 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen are solid, but the test vehicle’s Pinnacle trim, premium leather, and option packages show how much the experience can change as you move up.
• Powertrain: The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six paired with a 120-kilowatt electric motor and a 21.2-kilowatt-hour battery. It delivers 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, with 604 hp available with Race Start active, plus an EPA-rated 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
• Safety package: The standard setup includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system. The Driver Assistance Package adds 16 additional systems, including adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and Pre-Safe collision preparation for rear and side impacts.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with augmented reality navigation, music streaming, and MBUX voice control. The optional Superscreen package adds a 12.3-inch passenger touchscreen and an interior selfie and video camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon is rated at 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode.

Which 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: E 350 Sedan, E 450 Sedan, E 450 All-Terrain Wagon, AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• E 350 Sedan: This is the entry point if you want the E-Class experience with the least expensive starting point in the lineup. It suits you if you care more about the core luxury and tech feel than about extra performance or wagon utility.
• E 450 Sedan: This is the better all-around sedan choice if you want more power and a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to AMG pricing. It should be the best-value trim for most buyers who want a balanced luxury sedan.
• E 450 All-Terrain Wagon: Choose this if you want wagon practicality and a more rugged look, plus technology that can assist with light off-road travel. It makes the most sense if utility matters more than outright speed.
• AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan: Pick this if you want the strongest performance character in the lineup and are willing to pay for it. It is the trim for buyers who want the most excitement and the most advanced hardware.

The safety package is not standard across the lineup, so you should verify which driver-assistance features are included on the specific car you’re considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class does not have published NHTSA or IIHS safety ratings in the available data.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety equipment includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, semi-autonomous self-parking, Pre-Safe forward-collision preparation, Pre-Safe Sound, and SOS emergency call service. The optional Driver Assistance Package adds 16 more systems, including adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and rear- and side-impact Pre-Safe preparation.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should check the exact equipment list on any used example before you buy.

Should I buy a 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner and brings the debut of the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, which combines plug-in hybrid efficiency with AMG-engineered performance.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version with the most distinctive wagon and performance story, the 2026 is the one to target. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-equipped example rather than the newest badge.
