Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 earns an expert rating of 7.17/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

It’s a strong fit if you want a compact SUV that looks and feels more upscale than many rivals, with a redesigned exterior, a cleaner interior, standard all-wheel drive, and Google built-in across the lineup. It also gains more space and more technology than before, which helps it feel like a meaningful step forward for everyday use.

The trade-offs are just as clear: the carryover 187-horsepower engine and six-speed automatic feel dated, and the powertrain is a weak point in a class where competitors increasingly offer hybrid options and stronger acceleration. Fuel economy is also a downside, so this is better for you if style, interior quality, and value matter more than outright efficiency or performance.

Good and great deals account for 42.3% of listings, which suggests there’s solid market availability if you’re shopping now.

Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

The 2026 CX-5 is positioned as a familiar, carryover-mechanical SUV with a redesigned body and updated cabin tech, which can be reassuring if you prefer a simpler gas powertrain over a more complex hybrid setup. Its standard all-wheel drive and conventional six-speed automatic also point to a straightforward ownership experience rather than cutting-edge complexity.

The performance setup is basic in a way that can help long-term dependability, since you’re not dealing with a turbocharged engine or hybrid system in this model year. Mazda also includes a year of free data for Google built-in, which helps offset some of the tech upgrade cost early on.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the vehicle’s dated powertrain and below-average fuel economy may make it less satisfying over time than newer alternatives.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mazda CX-5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on cabin condition, since the interior uses some hard plastics in high-contact areas that can show scuffs more easily. It’s also smart to verify that the tech and driver-assistance features work as expected, since this model leans heavily on standard equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base and Select trims use 17-inch wheels, while Preferred and above move to 19-inch wheels; upper trims also add a more premium feel, with leather seating on Premium and Premium Plus.
• Powertrain: The only powertrain is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, automatic emergency braking with Turn-Across Traffic detection and Head-On Collision Mitigation, rear automatic emergency braking with rear cross-traffic alert and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, vehicle exit warning, driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and dynamic guidelines for the rear-view camera.
• Infotainment: Most trims get a 12.9-inch touchscreen, while the Premium Plus gets a 15.6-inch unit. Google built-in is standard, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired on the base 2.5 S and wireless on Select and above, and all trims get a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 combined mpg.

Which 2026 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Premium, Premium Plus.

Here’s the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 formula with standard all-wheel drive, Google built-in, and the full safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest price and don’t need extra comfort features.
• Select: This is the first trim to add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it a smart step up if you want easier phone integration without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim. It adds 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, a head-up display, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 10-way power driver’s seat with memory, making it the sweet spot for most shoppers.
• Premium: This trim adds a Bose 12-speaker audio system and SiriusXM satellite radio, so it’s the one to choose if you care more about cabin ambiance and sound quality.
• Premium Plus: This is the top trim, with a larger 15.6-inch screen, a 360-degree View Monitor with underfloor and parking views, a driver monitoring system, rear USB-C ports, adaptive front-lighting, front cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, and Cruising & Traffic Support with Lane-Change Assist.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but the Premium Plus gets the most advanced driver-assistance and camera features.

Is the 2026 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2026 CX-5’s crash-test results had not been published at the time of writing, so there isn’t an official rating to cite yet.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

You get a very comprehensive standard safety suite on every trim, including adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, automatic emergency braking with Turn-Across Traffic detection and Head-On Collision Mitigation, rear automatic emergency braking with rear cross-traffic alert and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, vehicle exit warning, driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and dynamic guidelines for the rear camera.

The Premium Plus adds an adaptive front-lighting system, front cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, Cruising & Traffic Support with Lane-Change Assist, a driver monitoring system, and a 360-degree View Monitor. Seven airbags come standard across the lineup.

Should I buy a 2026 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 42.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• It brings a full redesign with standard all-wheel drive, Google built-in, and a more upscale cabin.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It offers a more engaging driving character with a sporty, upscale feel.

The bottom line: Choose the 2026 if you want the newest CX-5 design, standard AWD, and the strongest tech and safety package in the lineup. If you’re more price-sensitive and want a proven alternative with a familiar personality, the 2025 remains worth a look.
